The Schoolly D Thread!!!

I’m sure I’ve probably had a thread on Schoolly before in the past…but who cares… this is the coolest most baddest cat on the planet and the real original gangster who basically invented Gangster Rap with PSK - What Does It Mean? back in 85…difference between Schoolly and the rest that followed was Schoolly was funkier, funnier and waaaaaaaaay cooler than the rest. Plus Schoolly’s voice sounded great…I LOVE the sound of his vocal.

A dedication to a man who released some of the coolest records on this little round planet!!!

As Edan said…“Schoolly D knew the time!”

SCHOOLLY D INTERVIEW

Back in high school, one of my friends was a big Schoolly fan.

I bought the How A Black Man Feels cd, back in the mid 90s.

It was ok. You’ll probably laugh at this but I liked Gang Starr much better than Schoolly.

Hahahaha…tru dat tru dat… Premier & the late Guru bow down to Schoolly…they’d have no careers without him. Gangstarr had their moments…Schoolly wiped the floor with them though.

Saying you liked Gangstarr better than Schoolly is kind of like saying you liked Static-X much better than late 80s early 90s Ministry. But each to their own I guess.

Siouxsie & The Banshees sampled “P.S.K. - What Does It Mean?” for the song “Kiss Them For Me”. I sampled the Schooly D loop and reworked it for a cover of the SATB song a couple of years ago. …and beyond that, I don’t know much about his music.

Do some digging dude…the essential albums are…

Selftitled
Saturday Night
Smoke Some Kill
Am I Black Enough For You
How A Black Man Feels

The magic of the music was the combo of DJ Code Money & Schoolly…the beats they created and the samples they used were brilliant…totally bad-ass and funky as all hell.

Put your filas on (and your headphones!) and blast those links for an insight into the music Tenohtwo…basically the guy was the black Fonz with a giant gold chain and real street rhymes. A true innovator.
