A good response. I just like pushing buttons a bit.
Admittedly Ministry’s finest moments probably come in their earlier work. The beginning of Al and Paul. Twitch, The Land Of Rape And Honey, Mind… and Psalm 69. Not to discredit the later material, but as you pointed out most of the Psalm metal people lost interest. Some of it might be due to the fact that Ministry did take 3-4 years after to release a new effort. That surely killed some fanbase off, but most would have bailed at the Filthpig sound.
It’s just interesting to see people bag on Filthpig still. Maybe the reason I still love it is it was the first Ministry album I got. I was looking for Psalm 69 and “JBMHR” but couldn’t find it. Filthpig didn’t have any tracklisting on the package, so I grabbed it. Still loved it, and hunted down Ministry material with a passion. Psalm 69 was the last thing in my collection pretty much. I had the OOP LORAH before Psalm.
Going back on track, I always did love the post-Psalm stuff. DSOTS, Filthpig and Animoitisomina has really grown on me a lot. It’s all great material. Though the experimentation seems to alienate people a bit. Now the “new old” sound will alienate people. Barker’s departure marks the end, but like I said if it’s what Grandpa Al wants to do, let him do it. He’s already said his career is near it’s end. He’ll do what he wants to do, whether it’s mindless thrash-tastic irrelevant metal, or experimental. Like I said, double edged sword. Fun to see people still worship Reznor here to a degree, yet bag on With_Teeth like it’s the worst thing ever. Same thing with Al. He could do a Pink Anvil/Merzbow or SunnO))) deal and I suppose we’d build a shrine, instead he’s decided to take it easy and just do whatever. He’s 46 years old and going to retire soon. shrugs Whatever. As for HOTM I doubt that made him that popular, and can’t write that album off fully. Worm. Lyrics I suppose aren’t anything that special, but still kind of an interesting song coming from the Ministry camp. I doubt his new album will make him popular either. Most of the masses will essentially know or remember Ministry for Psalm 69. Does Al love that fact, or does he not care for it? Makes me wonder.
Al’s heyday has come and gone long ago. Now he’s just having fun and maybe is just making a quick buck, but guess he wants some money to retire on. He’s earned it. We can still worship all his past albums for their ground breaking nature, and hopefully take some pleasure in the “irreleavnat” end of career music for what it is. Al winding down to retirement. Maybe I thought HOTM could have been better, but could have been much worse. I’ve experienced both ends of the spectrum for liking HOTM. Out on the road with the band I used to work for, bassist and drummer both like Ministry. Listening to HOTM, they went this is boring and repetitive and pulled it out. Singer bought the CD, he’s a looong time Ministry fan and he loved it to death.
It will all just come down to opinion, and it’s good to express them. I’ll always love the Ministry classics more so, but still enjoy the newer releases for what they are. I’m just not putting my hopes for the greatest Ministry album ever, or even the most experimental. Just not going to happen due to Paul leaving, but besides; what is experimental anymore? Seems almost everythings been done. But that’s just my opinion. [:)]
