the new ministry lineup

Has anyone read this interview yet?

Al Jourgensen: Right now, the Ministry band is a whole new band for us. Joey Jordison of SLIPKNOT is playing drums, Paul Rave of KILLING JOKE is playing bass and Tommy Victor of PRONG is playing guitar. And, whatever in the hell I do in this band…

SLIPKNOT?!?! [shocked][:(]

I really hope Al knows what he’s doing here…[:/]

Raven on bass - very cool. Guess that rules out a KJ tour for a while.

I don’t like Slipknot, but if the guy is a good drummer, that’s all that really matters.

I can’t see this lineup…probably false.

A good drummer is a good drummer. Doesn’t matter what band he plays in really. Look at Freese - playing with Avril Lavigne, the Indigo Girls, Offspring, etc. But also touring with nin, and has played for Barker, perfect circle…

Same with any other instrument…

I thought Tommy Victor and Al hated each other. No way I could see them working together, as awesome as that would be. Tommy always seemed to be jealous of Al because he could never duplicate the success Ministry had with Psalm 69.

Tommy Victor on guitars? That would be great! The last Prong album was total crap but the guy is still a great guitar player! If they record an album with this lineup it would be really cool.

SLIPKNOT?!?! [shocked][:(]

Maybe they’ll all wear masks next tour? [:P]

If he added the Clown to the lineup, who for all I can see, just runs around the stage and adds nothing to the music, that would raise an eyebrow or two, but at least Joey can play. He’s probably the only bright spot in an otherwise terrible band.

An all around solid lineup, IMO. Victor is one of the best guitarists on the planet and Raven is a better bassist than Paul. Perfect for a great thrash album.

Al Jourgensen: It’s not really necessary for this new record. This record is really turning out to be a thrash-o-rama. So we just need one, extremely good, fast drummer and I think Joey certainly fits that bill.

I can not express how much I am now anticipating this release. Better lace up the boots for the pits next tour.

i thought killing joke were working on a new record for next year and planning touring. what is raven doing with ministry?

Raven hasn’t been with KJ in while right?

I thought Youth was playing bass again.

thrash o rama?
not really my thang [:/]

Oh god.

I fuckin knew it. More low-brow, “balls-to-the-wall” glory days bullshit metal.

Ministry is so irrelevant now.

Raven hasn’t been with KJ in while right?

I thought Youth was playing bass again.

Raven is back with KJ and was on the last album and tour. Youth was also credited on the last LP.

Paging Dave Mustaine…paging Dave Mustaine…

Yep, that’s just what the world needs right now…another thrash metal hiccup with George W samples.

Phew! It’s a good thing we’ve got people like Al J around to remind us just how ‘evil’ and ‘corrupt’ governments are these days.

voidhead,

why do you even post here, you are clearly much better than ministry. every post you make is dripping with negativity laced with your pompous self rightousness. what do you do more…stroke your ego or beat off to trent reznor?

Could this be why tour dates were planned out so far in advance? I know Prong and Overkill are touring next year, and Al probably had to work around the schedules of Raven and Joey as well. Makes sense now why they were confirming dates for May of 2006 back in July.

Could be a good guess as to why the tours are planned out, but more wait and see. Could all change, as don’t know if Slipknot would let Joey be gone for that length of time. Especially during the summer. Victor and Raven seem more free.

Then again, this could still be a joke. I’ll wait for further official word, and not just Al rambling in an interview.

I say let Grandpa Al do what he wants to now. He’s earned it by entertaining us for 20 years now. Don’t like the idea or CD, then yeah, don’t buy it or listen. He’s just having fun. Suppose he could go the route of NIN and then get bitched at for doing a “soft” album. Double standards, gotta love 'em! With each album seems people find a new way to write Al and Ministry off as irrelevant. Probably been irrelveant for a while now. Since Psalm 69 since most albums afterwards don’t seem to get very high praise. Then again, it’s all opinions. [:)]

Fuck that man, as far as I can see, Ministry was relevant for much longer than people give them credit for.

Filth Pig, Dark Side of the Spoon, Animositisomina…

All were relevant and made progress in Ministry’s over-all sound. In face, I’d take Filth Pig and Animositisomina over Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste anyday!!!

Mind is too repetitive overall as an album. They’re developing a specific sound and truly hone it down to a science, but where are the great oddballs like “Brick Windows” was on Filth Pig or “The Light Pours Out of Me” on Animositisomina?

Yeah sure we’ve got “Test” and “Dream Song”, but those are bad oddballs, not good ones. I personally feel Mind is a bit overrated.

So those who think I just hate post-Psalm Ministry or whatever, or that I don’t think they were relevant after Psalm, are totally mistaken. I truly love some of Ministry’s most recent records!!!

But what I DO think is irrelevant is Ministry post-Animositisomina. This includes Houses of the Mole, Rantology etc.

Paul’s departure truly marks the point where the band stopped progressing their sound and moving forward, and where they became a self-parody…shitting out dime-a-dozen thrash metal that is SOOOO fucking irrelevant and mindless!!! Just a bunch of headbanging bullshit for the kids. Fuck this balls-to-wall punk rock aesthetic. That “we’re gonna recapture the glory days” bullshit is what’s irrelevant.

We all know Ministry is capable of delivering some of the best metal around without even breaking a sweat. But what made them great in the past was that they always transcended that easy route of just riffing away for some mindless headbangers. In interviews they admit that the sound on Psalm 69 was just too formulaic, too easy to pump out. They were’nt really challenging themselves and thus moved on to the glorious Filth Pig aesthetic and beyond, truly evolving with each step.

Sure the moshing crowd didn’t get it and thus lost interest, but that was the point. Ministry was always a step ahead of that bullshit. They were determined to experiment and innovate. Now with Paul gone Ministry is simply taking the easy route…making stuff they know will go over well with the average listener without really continuing the innovation that made them so worthwhile and challenging.

A good response. I just like pushing buttons a bit.

Admittedly Ministry’s finest moments probably come in their earlier work. The beginning of Al and Paul. Twitch, The Land Of Rape And Honey, Mind… and Psalm 69. Not to discredit the later material, but as you pointed out most of the Psalm metal people lost interest. Some of it might be due to the fact that Ministry did take 3-4 years after to release a new effort. That surely killed some fanbase off, but most would have bailed at the Filthpig sound.

It’s just interesting to see people bag on Filthpig still. Maybe the reason I still love it is it was the first Ministry album I got. I was looking for Psalm 69 and “JBMHR” but couldn’t find it. Filthpig didn’t have any tracklisting on the package, so I grabbed it. Still loved it, and hunted down Ministry material with a passion. Psalm 69 was the last thing in my collection pretty much. I had the OOP LORAH before Psalm.

Going back on track, I always did love the post-Psalm stuff. DSOTS, Filthpig and Animoitisomina has really grown on me a lot. It’s all great material. Though the experimentation seems to alienate people a bit. Now the “new old” sound will alienate people. Barker’s departure marks the end, but like I said if it’s what Grandpa Al wants to do, let him do it. He’s already said his career is near it’s end. He’ll do what he wants to do, whether it’s mindless thrash-tastic irrelevant metal, or experimental. Like I said, double edged sword. Fun to see people still worship Reznor here to a degree, yet bag on With_Teeth like it’s the worst thing ever. Same thing with Al. He could do a Pink Anvil/Merzbow or SunnO))) deal and I suppose we’d build a shrine, instead he’s decided to take it easy and just do whatever. He’s 46 years old and going to retire soon. shrugs Whatever. As for HOTM I doubt that made him that popular, and can’t write that album off fully. Worm. Lyrics I suppose aren’t anything that special, but still kind of an interesting song coming from the Ministry camp. I doubt his new album will make him popular either. Most of the masses will essentially know or remember Ministry for Psalm 69. Does Al love that fact, or does he not care for it? Makes me wonder.

Al’s heyday has come and gone long ago. Now he’s just having fun and maybe is just making a quick buck, but guess he wants some money to retire on. He’s earned it. We can still worship all his past albums for their ground breaking nature, and hopefully take some pleasure in the “irreleavnat” end of career music for what it is. Al winding down to retirement. Maybe I thought HOTM could have been better, but could have been much worse. I’ve experienced both ends of the spectrum for liking HOTM. Out on the road with the band I used to work for, bassist and drummer both like Ministry. Listening to HOTM, they went this is boring and repetitive and pulled it out. Singer bought the CD, he’s a looong time Ministry fan and he loved it to death.

It will all just come down to opinion, and it’s good to express them. I’ll always love the Ministry classics more so, but still enjoy the newer releases for what they are. I’m just not putting my hopes for the greatest Ministry album ever, or even the most experimental. Just not going to happen due to Paul leaving, but besides; what is experimental anymore? Seems almost everythings been done. But that’s just my opinion. [:)]
