The Nameless Wretch

The album is titled “What Worth Is A Man If He Can’t Be Haunted?” and it is a sorta… shoegazey doom/droneish album with super industrial and meditative qualities. i have been telling people it sounds like Fugazi covering Samhain songs using The Melvins’ or later period Killing Joke’s gear.
super personal and introspective, but at the same time shrouded (or maybe steeped?) in allusions to Krishna, Judy Garland, Clive Barker’s work, catholic imagery, and a few other things.

the album is free, so i would LOVE to hear what some of you guys think.

i know i havent been around here for a long while. new job, new place to live, lots of change and such so i havent been posting here. BUT, i have just put together my new solo project The Nameless Wretch, and put out the debut album TODAY. and i figured, there are at least a FEW of you here who might be into it. even if only glancingly.
for the facebook page, you can go here https://www.facebook.com/TheNamelessWretch
and for the free download of the album (comes with some cool liner notes if you DL it as compared to just streaming) you can go here http://rustyhack-sawrecords.bandcamp.com/album/what-worth-is-a-man-if-he-cant-be-haunted

Hey, Brother! Good to see you around. My wife is sleeping next to me, but I’ll be sure to give your tunes a listen this weekend. I hope you’ve been well. Cheers!

Yeah ill check this out too. your description certainly has my curiosity piqued.

thanks guys! haha. yeah, im hoping that you two in particular find at least a LITTLE something you like in it. haha. the hard copies are up on Amazon right now, and have moved a bit, which is nice. i did all the graphic design work, and im super pleased with how the disk/tray/cover/booklet all look in real life. the digital booklet attached with the DL looks nice too, (i think and hope at least haha)

I get what you’re going for and it’s really well done and powerful . . . and I LOVE how the bass really carries the songs. Anyway, let me just talk a bit about my favorite track . . . .

“Under The Sage Brush” is just about the most gut-twistingly lovely and crushing thing I’ve heard in a very long time. It makes me think of old Neurosis or even Amebix or something. The emotion in it is just incredible. Dark and haunted, yet at the same time heroic and persevering.

I’ll send you something else . . .

Anyway, great job. I wish you all the best, Brother!

Usually If I don’t dig a prongers musical efforts I don’t say anything (Unless it’s void) at all but since you asked… I’ll try to keep short.

Sorry dude, I’m not into it.
I listened to it multiple times today as I did yard work. so I gave it a fair shot. My biggest turn off to it is the fact that whoever is singing is waaaay off key. And since I’m tone deaf, it’s really bad if I noticed it.
I don’t hear any of those influences you cited… The best I gathered musically was new Barker fused with Jesu Pale Sketches. Some of the music was not bad at all but the vocalist kills it. There’s more but I’m real cautious about shitting on members’ projects. If you want my brutal honest opinions I will offer it but the short version is I’m not digging on it. Sorry, dude. Don’t give up. Keep at it.

@gunn

thanks man, your words here and in the message are very kind. im glad some of the stuff could connect.

@grumpy

you seriously dont hear any Fugazi in this?! but yeah, thanks for being honest. surprisingly, havent heard much negative at all yet. so its a good balance to hear some snags.

@pro

thanks, man. ‘Layers’ is a super personal one, i was really excited that it came out the way i wanted. the song ‘Ungrounded’ towards the end is a similar song in parts of its structure.
as for the mixing things you pointed out, haha, its funny that you say that, i was wrestling with that issue with the vocals. kinda pushing and pulling them back and forth. im glad you feel that way though, it means when i was thinking of doing it that way i wasnt alone! haha.

Sorry man, Just not my thing. if it makes any difference to you at all, very few prongers’ music I can get in to. But that says more about me than it does you all.

Liking what I hear so far. I have an entire bandcamp I’ve gotta listen to now. [:)]

haha, well thanks man. there are some similarities to this band/album in a lot of the Rusty Hack-Saw Project albums, particularly the later ones like ‘Dreams Without Hope’ 1 and 2, ‘Dedication & Conviction’, ‘Days Out West’, and ‘Doors Left Locked’, as far as the sorta spacy noise/ambient elements. and the band Overdue Exorcism on that page is sorta like if… well… if Crowbar did Misfits covers. haha.

but if you like this album, and you have the money, the physical release up on amazon is a nice collection and has some cool artwork throughout. http://www.amazon.com/What-Worth-Man-Cant-Haunted/dp/B00C1425SI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364350509&sr=8-1&keywords=the+nameless+wretch

but thanks man, im glad you’re into it.

I’ve only really listened to 4 tracks so far but I did like “Closet Mirror”. Kinda reminds me of Jesu musically and I dig the beginning vocals (personal preference as I’m not a fan of the style towards the end). There’s also some other stuff that caught my interest but I’ll have to go back later and listen to them fully.

My main suggestion is to lay off the compression on the drums a bit. They are waaay too snappy and can be distracting at times (and kind of hurt too). That was the one thing that really stood out to me as something that needed to be changed immediately. I’d back off on the hi’s on the kick drum a bit too. It’s got a tad too much of that “click” sound where the beater is hitting the head that a lot of death metal bands use, but it doesn’t sit well with some of what I’d heard. I’d try lowering it a bit somewhere around the 3-6k area (sometimes 6-8k).

Then again, that could just be your preference vs. mine (in terms of the bass drum sound). I’m trying to give the sort of constructive criticism I’d want. And I hope I don’t sound rude or like I’m bashing any of it, because that’s not my intent. If I thought it was shit I wouldn’t say anything at all.

Getting the drums to fit into the mix when you’re going for a lush/“shoegazey” sound can be a pain a lot of times. Maybe EQ them so they stand out a bit more in the mix instead of relying on compression for it?

I do have some questions though. What DAW are you using? I’m assuming it’s on a computer because the drums are programmed/plug-in, yeah? If so what drum plug-in are you using? What sort of guitar and effects? Do you mic them or go direct?

EDIT: Also, what the compression settings on the drums if you remember or have access to them?

thanks for the in-depth opinions.

as for the drum compression, i actually set out to have that death metal sound with the drums, so that made me laugh to read. haha. im working on sketches and ideas for the follow up, as well as playing around with the 8 b-sides for this album, and i will have to keep in mind that some people here want less of that punch/click sound on the drums. so thanks for that.
one of the problems i have with so many shoegaze bands is that kinda passive softness in so much of the music. i have been raised in hardcore and death bands, so when i want drums to really weigh heavy and add a vicious dimension to music, that is the way i am just inclined towards. but, i should push my boundaries a little more, so i will have to play with that.

and no man, you dont sound rude or like you are bashing it. and even if you were, whatever, its the internet. i was expecting a few choice people here to be cruel and dismissive. haha. the fact that you gave it a spin is kind enough of ya. if you DO download it though (for free mind you) you will get a chance to look through the liner notes which i think are fitting for the textures in the music.

now, as for your tech questions,
i used simple midi drum sets, sampled some of my own sounds, used a simple M-Audio keyboard as a trigger, and sequenced it all in (believe it or not) Garageband.
as for the guitar/bass, i used a combination of pedals i have collected over the years and then direct fed them into my computer (via a pretty nice USB lossless mixer) and built some extra levels with some reverb/echo effects i got through a digital pre-amp.

i dont remember the compression settings exactly on the drums, and the computer i use for music isnt next to me at the moment, but i do know that i modeled a lot of the tone/compression settings off some stuff i had read that a few bands im into do with their kits. thus the deathy sounds.

:slight_smile:

Yeah, I understand what you mean about the drums in a lot of shoegaze music. Although shoegaze has always been more guitar oriented and lush/layered and less about the rhythm section.
I think A Place to Bury Strangers does an excellent job of adding the shoegaze aspect with a heavier sound as well as making the drums more abrasive in the mix. “Ego Death” and “DeadBeat” are perfect examples of this.

Garageband is surprisingly capable, especially in terms of MIDI sequencing. I personally use Logic Pro and prefer it over ProTools now. It’s Garageband on steroids. Just as capable as ProTools but much more efficient.

Right on. Good luck with your stuff. I’ll check more of it out later.

A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS! yes.

and yeah, i dont do everythign in garage band, obviously, but it is wonderful for working out drum patterns. i enjoy cubase for most other work. i am not a huge fan of protools as it is a fucking money vacuum. it just keeps sucking up money from you for every little thing. IF you are paying for it… of course.

but thanks man, in time i would love to hear more about what you think of the composition/poetry of the album, you clearly have a window into the genre.

so, i donno if anyone here is interested, but my project The Nameless Wretch just put out a new album (the sophomore one!) yesterday. ‘What Are Heroes?’

http://rustyhack-sawrecords.bandcamp.com/album/what-are-heroes

its a lot more… melodic, i guess could be the word for it. more meditative and more shoegazy. ‘Living Water’ is the pushed ‘single’ as it were. haha.

but i just figured i should show the progression here for some of ya’ll.
