The Mark Of Cain "Ill At Ease" Thread

Well I thought it was that time of year again to demand that everyone here do themselves a favour and buy the album “Ill At Ease” by legendary Australian band Mark Of Cain.

“Ill At Ease” was produced by Henry Rollins and released in 1996. The album is quite simply wonderfully crushing and in my top 10 ever.

Justin Broadrick is a big Mark Of Cain fan too and did an amazing remix of the song “You Let Me Down” on Mark Of Cain’s “Rock’n’Roll” remix album. This alone demands that you buy “Ill At Ease” due to Justin being the man of all men.

Below is the myspace link for Mark Of Cain…please please PLEASE listen to the songs “Tell Me” and “Pointman”. These are but two of the gems that await you on “Ill At Ease”.

In short this album rules and you need it.

Good night.

I bought a “lucky dip” of mid-90’s singles/eps the other day from someone, and a Mark Of Cain one happened to be in there… I haven’t checked it out yet. Must make a mental note to do so when I get home.

A friend of mine a few years back was really into them - I just never got around to checking them out.

As an Australian or at least someone living in Australia you should be ASHAMED of yourself for not yet checking out The Mark Of Cain!

I’m not sure what song is on that comp of yours (probably Degenerate Boy) but I’d seriously suggest picking up “Ill At Ease” followed by “Battlestick”. Catch them live if you ever get the chance as they’re easily one of the deadliest live acts around…they have been for about 20yrs actually.

RESPECT!!!

damn toot you are shilling hard for this band. Makes me think you’re a member of it or own stock in the band. Perhaps I’ll look for this at Amoeba too.

The reason I push this band is because they kick major ass…let me put it this way Smurf…I saw them live on New Years Eve 96-97 two years after seeing Ministry for the first time. Now at that time (94-95) Ministry were pretty goddamned bad-ass in the live department…Infact at the time I was positive no other band on the planet would touch a live Ministry show…that is of course until I saw Mark Of Cain that New Years Eve night.

I’d be very surprised If Amoeba had “Ill At Ease” Smurf…get it here on amazon.com from California new and sealed for $12.35 plus $2.98 postage.

Good call Smurf!

All hail Mark Of Cain!!

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHH!!!..

>>>…mark of cain are indeed great…

first heard them when I was 8, shit ye’s not.

exposed to jjj radio a lot

i always thought, even then…

‘they seem to dig war and soldiers a lot’…

i can understand the rationale behind this…

david hicks was from adelaide, after all… [laugh]

‘they seem to dig war and soldiers a lot’…

Yeah they do have alot of military themes.

What’s happening with Hicks anyway?

Was freed, ordered not to sell his story by the government for a certain period of time, the period of time has elapsed and he doesn’t seem to want to capitalise on his story and instead is leading a relatively quiet life.

I still consider him treacherous scum that shouldn’t be given the liberty of setting foot on our soil, but ahhh well. He can live freely, just anywhere but Australia.

I’m actually quite a fan of his…well not so much a “fan” but interested in his story none the less.

You need to remember that in 1999 Hicks went over to Albania to fight alongside the KLA against Serbian forces. When he returned to Australia, Hicks tried to join the Australian military and they wouldn’t let him in because he wasn’t “smart” enough. At this stage Hicks was a well trained warrior so he would have been a great addition to the Aussie army. Not letting Hicks in was very “un-smart”.

As for Hicks going to Afghanistan to fight alongside his Muslim brothers…good on him I say. Our forces have no reason to be over there and need a good old kick up the ass to get out. The sooner they do get out the less dead aussies, yanks, brits, kiwis and whoever the hell else is over there and Iraq that shouldn’t be.

I can only imagine you dislike the man for the fact he may have killed fellow countrymen in Afghanistan…but you know what they say…“all’s fair in love & war”.

I’m from New Zealand and if Hicks killed a few kiwis over there during his time it doesn’t bother me (although obviously it’d be a shame if the person killed was not an areshole). The reason it doesn’t bother me is it’s a “war”…started by us unjustly by the way. We shouldn’t be there. Also being killed is an occupational hazard when joining the military so…

Hicks is no longer a Muslim now and not a threat to anyone in Australia so I see no reason why he shouldn’t be allowed to live in the country where he was born.

Personally I’d be the first to buy the guys book if he ever wrote one as I for one think the guys story is pretty interesting.

That’s just my view though.

Now back on topic…MARK OF CAIN KICK ASS!!!

Sounds good, based on their MySpace page.
Very similar to Helmet at their best.

Sadly, this album will be essentially impossible for me to hear in its entirety due to the fact that it was never released here and I cant find any downloadable versions.

Still prefer Fudge Tunnel to this by the way.

Fudge Tunnel are quality. I’ve had “Hate Songs In E Minor” and “Creep Diet” for years. I was lucky enough to have caught them live in the mid 90’s too. Regardless Mark Of Cain trump those bad boys without breaking a sweat in my opinion.

To tell the truth I’m not sure what the hell Fudge Tunnel or Mark Of Cain are up to nowadays??? I’m pretty sure both are still together although I’m not 100% sure.

Yo Jupi why don’t you just score “Ill At Ease” online if you’re really interested in it and can’t score it in your town???

I may have to dig out “Creep Diet” and headphones now!

Fudge Tunnel dissolved a long time ago… ALex Newport has been working as a producer for well over a decade now and I dont think there are any plans to change that.

As for Fudge Tunnel, I really like their final album “The Complicated Futility Of Ignorance”. It might be a bit more traditional ‘metal’ in its approach but Newports totally VICIOUS vocal performance makes it one of my favorite angry albums. I’m surprised the man hasn’t lost his voice (or maybe he has and thats why he’s just a producer now?).

I looked for Ill At Ease but couldnt even find any illegal source to get it. Seems like a pretty elusive record.

It is…although there are quite a few on the Amazon links I’ve posted for a reasonable price.

Just looked at wiki and noticed Alex Newport produced some At The Drive In & Mars Volta releases so I imagine he’s doing really well for himself now and doesn’t need the drain of touring/writing/recording brutal Fudge Tunnel offerings I guess?

Another Fudge Tunnel album in the future would be pretty interesting.
