This is essential viewing. The greatest movie ever made. It’s a little too close to home for Jizzim and myself but regardless we adore it and so will you if you’ve never seen it!

Bad Boy Bubby is an uncompromising, Australian cult movie about the adventures of ‘Bubby’ a 35yr old man encountering the outside world for the first time after having spent his entire life locked up in a flat by his abusive mother. Bubby is a difficult film to describe being an erratic mixture of black comedy, tragedy and modern day adventure. Although hysterically funny in places the director likes to pull the rug from under your feet when its getting too much fun and let the mood of the film become much darker and more poignant.
Lacking in social skills Bubby enters the outside world with the mental age of a child, copying people’s phrases and behaviour to often hilarious and occasionally tragic results. The film’s simple plot easily hooks viewers into the film and we all become curious to see whatever Bubby’s next strange encounter will be be in our big bad world.
Made for only 750,000 US$, Bad Boy Bubby was written and directed by Dutch born, Australian filmmaker Rolf De Heer in 1993. Filmed in and around Adelaide it went on to win many prestigious film awards at home and abroad and became a popular cult film around the world, particularly in Europe.
The first half hour of the film is the most uncomfortable to watch as we experience the life Bubby has had living in a dark, windowless flat with a mother that bullies him and keeps him for sex. In this dark world Bubby’s only company are the cockroaches and his cat which he accidentally suffocates with clingfilm.
Out of the blue his old Father turns up and sets in motion a chain of events that lead to Bubby leaving behind his old life in the dark, dirty flat and venturing into the real world.
On encountering the world he inexplicably lays many women, hangs out with philosophical strangers and gets up to such diverse adventures as becoming a rock star and holding up a store whilst armed with a dead cat. By the end of the film however, he finds love with a kind woman with large breasts like his own mothers and starts to settles down to Bubby-esque family life (whatever that may be).
Bad Boy Bubby relentlessly pushes and pulls the viewer in different directions as it shifts between comedy, tragedy and surrealism. Part of this schizophrenia is due to De Heers idea to have different segments of the movie filmed by different camera operators to give different visions of each new experience of Bubby’s. It’s an interesting idea though not wholly successful as the films momentum is often lost when it goes off on one of its many tangents.
When at it’s best Bubby is a hilarious and exhilarating film and it’s good points far outweigh its flaws. It constantly pushes the boundaries of taste but is highly recommended for those of you with a strong stomach and a interest in twisted cult oddities.
