The Classic Arcade Video Game Thread.

Have you tried Visual Pinball / PinMame? It’s great if you like pinball.

You got a link for this? THe last time I had seen Pinball emulators it was in Early development and demos had not been released now I go to Mininova.org and the download is 9gigs! that decompress to 22 gigs!

Oh, man… much as I love old-skool platformers and RPGs of NES/SNES/Genesis fame, my favorite genre of games would DEFINITELY be be 2D arcade scrolling shooters.

Some of my faves:

Gyruss
Galaga
Sinistar
1945
Raiden
Gradius
R-Type
etc…

Basically, anything that requires insanely retarded twitch skills with an emphasis on blowing shit out of the skies/space makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

http://www.randydavis.com/vp/intro.htm will get you started. You have to install Visual Pinball and PinMame then download some tables and scripts that go with them. Sounds complicated at first but it’s just a few steps. The pinball games look just like the real deal and use the actual roms from the machines to display the images and make the sounds. It’s worth the trouble of setting it up.

thank you sir. I’ll give it a shot tomorrow.

Speaking of pinball emulators, I stumbled upon a NES version of my favorite pinball machine ever, Pin-Bot, while downloading some ROMs…

Awesome. Definitely one of the best titles for the NES, no doubt.

Brother, you can play a damn fine replica of this if you have a WII. theres a Wii game called Midway Pinball classics and they have like 8 tables. the playability is fantastic, they tilt and everything!

Don’t have a Wii, but I’ve been known to snag a title for a platform I don’t have to play on a friend’s system. Thanks for the heads-up!

How could i have forgotten the awesome…

WONDERBOY!!!

Wonderboy kicked ass when he scored a skateboard!

Wonderboy was great. So much better than the crappy Adventure Island on the Nintendo.

Wonderboy in Monsterland was awesome too!

Ghost’s n Goblins!

The daddy game was Splatter House! When that came out i was chuffed as you were Jason Vorhees and walked around wasting ghouls and stuff. You could use chainsaws, shotguns, machetes and other such nasty weapons to batter fuck out of folk! Good tymez!!!

Splatterhouse was great. I remember they had people hanging in the background that would puke out their guts (or acid) as you walked by.

Awesome stuff.

Hahahahaha!! That’s right…there was all sorts of gore-tastic stuff in that game! I’m surprised Splatter House was allowed in the spacey parlours actually???

New Friday the 13th and Tron movies previewed at San Diego Comic Con the other day.

How do you do a new Tron? I thought they already had a new Tron. It was called “The Matrix, Neo!”
But still I guess it’s worth a shot!

Bubble Bobble was, and still, is the shit. Never have two bubble-blowing cutey dinosaurs kicked so much ass. I think they could survive a mosh pit.

Space Harrier also kicked ass when it came out. So far ahead of its time when it came out in '85. Anything Sega came out in the 80’s was a classic. Altered Beast…“welcome to your doom!”

No song by Journey

Even they have an arcade game after themselves. I don’t know whether I should laugh or cry about that one.

Altered Beast was fuckin’ great. “Wise fwom your gwabe!”

Mad props to the Toot for mentioning Ghost & Goblins/Ghouls & Ghosts.

Ad how could we forget the arcade version of Battletoads? Not a classic, in the true sense of the word, but solid nonetheless. There’s just something satisfying about transmuting your foot into a giant spiked boot and pulling a Red Forman on some hapless rat.

The simpsons arcade game was always a fave… as was the ninja turtles arcage game.

And don’t forget Konami’s other great multi-player arcade: X-Men! Get six people to play it at once and you’re in for a real treat.

Somehow Konami always managed to have kids standing around on all of their multi-player machines. I was one of them when TMNT came out.

Think I’ve spent more on the X-Men cabinet than just about any other arcade game.

Simpsons and 1945 come a close second.
