Thank You To Our Veterans

Thanks to anyone in service or who has served our country and a special shout out also to any friends or family members who have someone serving.

Thank you for making this country great!

Gunnar

Mad respect to all vets today, belatedly.

Most of my dad’s side is in Navy.

Was Barker really in the Army?

Was Barker really in the Army?

Yes, wasn’t he stationed in West Germany before joining his brother Roland in the Blackouts?

Maynard James Keenan was also in the army. So was Hendrix. And, of course, Elvis. Johnny Cash was in the Air Force.

Plenty of (often surprising) musicians have served in the armed forces.

I wish I could fight in a war alongside Elvis and Johnny Cash.

Apparently Garfield creator Jim Davis feels differently about this day!

Garfield’s never been edgier!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! 30 years later Garfield finally runs out of lasagna jokes. I’d no idea that strip even still existed. It was never funny to begin with. But now it’s even less so. Which kind of makes me laugh. So, I guess in bizzaro-world Garfield is making a comeback.

To what? I don’t know. I’m drinking some really horrible beer. Garfield is a jackass. I hate that stupid cat and I really hate that dumb bugeyed dog that he lives with.

Don’t forget the coolest band ever…

THE MONKS!!!

I was gonna mention The Monks, but I forgot before I hit reply.

And Elvis and Hendrix were drafted, but I’m pretty sure the draft was over by the time Maynard and Paul served.

School-boy error!

Yeah, Maynard was definitely post-draft, and Barker would be also. I haven’t researched Barker’s career, but I pulled up Maynard’s wiki bio and got a kick out of this line . . .

Inspired by Bill Murray’s performance in the 1981 comedy film Stripes, Keenan joined the United States Army

No problem.

I’m a US Navy Veteran. I served as an Avionics Tech in a helicopter squadron near San Diego and made a Mediterranean cruise aboard the USS Roosevelt CV-42.

I’m actually one of the youngest Viet Nam era vets you’ll ever meet. Although I never went to Nam, I started boot camp in February '75 at the age of 17. As far as the VA is concerned, Viet Nam lasted until June '75…so I qualify.

Only had to serve 2 years active service plus the length of my A school which was 4 months. So…I got out in June '77 at the age of 19.

Worked a lot of night shifts on the deck of a carrier during my stint. Got some really good stories about Naples too.

I went to Naples when I was in the Navy, too. Is that place an armpit or what?

Dry-docked in Naples for 30 days during the middle of the cruise due to repairs. Had a real good look at the place. Armpit? Sure, but at least it seemed like an exciting armpit at the time. There was no shortage of fun.

I imagine after an extended time onboard the ship seeing the same dudes every day, any place you can get off would seem like a great escape.

Yea, that’s about how I felt. And it was only a train ride to places like Rome or Pompei. The ship I was on hit a sandbar on the way out of the Netherlands so we had to go back and stay there 3 weeks until they fixed it. We were about an hour by train from Amsterdam. That carrier must have been really old. When I was in the Roosevelt was nuclear powered (CVN).

The Rosy I was on was commissioned during WW2, and the cruise I made on her was her last.

But Naples…great food, cheap prices, countless piazzas…liked it there. Once, the tour bus I was on to Mt. Vesuvius caught fire and while we were waiting for another bus to be sent…we were invited by some locals to a wedding reception. So we went, the whole bus. We didn’t want to leave when the new bus arrived.

barker in the army? weird.

That’s a great story, Wempathy! I’ve never been to Italy, but so many people have told me similar tales of how gracious and wonderful the people there are.
