TERRY BACK IN TE FOLD

Honestly, I don’t like any early Fugazi, but the last two albums they put out are really, REALLY great

Really? What are they called? I remember when “In On The Killtaker” came out and my buddy bought it. I put it on the stereo, played it barely one time and thought it was complete garbage. I think I tried some “Red Medicine” and “The Argument” and found those to be pure snot too.

I’ll be sure to check out The Evens, too. Thanks, Grumps.

That’s funny. I really only like the first 2 albums. And those first 2 are really amazing.

Forget 'em. They’re communist and anti anything remotely productive. I hear Ian Mackaye lives in a grey walled apartment with pictures of “great union leaders” on his walls and no form of entertainment other than an old transistor radio. He sustains himself by living off cabbage soup and flavourless two minute noodles and reads socialist newspapers out loud at the breakfast table.

Very few people like him.

^That’s pretty much exactly how I imagine him too. His first few albums were totally excellent. But he’s always seemed like an annoying sissy to me.

In On The Killtaker is one of my all time favorite albums. easily. some truly mindblowing and brilliant work on that one.

‘The Argument’ and ‘Red Medicine’ also are gut-wrenching and beautiful. haha. so… maybe we wont agree on Fugazi. haha.

i really love Ian’s work with Teen Idols, Minor Threat, Embrace, and Fugazi. i cant quite get into The Evens all that much, but that is more of my own hangup than any mistake of his or his wife’s.

but Ian is a supper fun and really on point guy. i have only met him once, but he was funny and cheerful. i have also seen boatloads of interviews with him, and i always like the roots of what he is saying (except for his opinions on most gangster rap) so im not sure where this ‘ian is an asshole’ thing comes from. but i mean, he is good close buddies with Henry Rollins and Keith Morris to this day, so he has to at least be funny. haha.

Rusty: Are there any particular tracks on those three albums that I should try out? I don’t want to do any extended full album listenings or anything, but I’ll go back and give it a taste if there’s something you think is particularly special.

Embrace . . . I remember the name and seeing them on the Dischord catalogs and such, but I don’t think I ever even knew Ian was in that one.

I just read it as an overtly asinine thing to say to get someone to bite.

I had no idea about this. I don’t see Morris collaborate with that many people so I kinda thought he was hard to get along with or was just snobby. (his OFF! project is fucking great!) Never thought they would travel in the same circles.

in particular look up ‘Walken’s Syndrome’ and ‘Instrument’ in particular off of IotKt, and as for The Argument, i honestly couldnt pick a song. just… all of it. haha. but you cant do wrong just ‘darting in the phonebook’ with that one.

and Embrace was Ian’s answer to Rites of Spring, which also fucking owns. gah, i love the whole DC post punk post hardcore sound.

and Grmpy, yeah OFF! is awesome stuff.

Yeah, I remember Rites of Spring. I liked that one. Guy Picciotto, right? I remember in the mid-90’s hearing them referred to as an emo band and I had no idea what the heck that was supposed to mean. Actually, I’m still pretty unclear on the whole emo thing.

But yeah, back on topic, Rites of Spring was pretty cool.

I bought that Rites Of Spring lp back in the early 90’s. Racking my brains to remember what it sounded like. I’ve probably still got it, but that’s the problem with having 700 or so vinyl lp’s on shelves, it takes forever to find something in particular. So usually I just go to the shelf and take out the first thing I pick up.

As for Fugazi, I followed them for two or three years from about 91 - 93 and then basically forgot they ever existed. Steady Diet was generally on pretty heavy rotation back in the day. That comment about them being communists made me chuckle as I remember thinking even back then that they were so socially righteous and stiff.

yup, and Guy was the other singer/guitarist in Fugazi as well.

the whole DC emotive post-hardcore thing got labeled emo, and then it spiraled out from there. its funny, bands like Rites of Spring or Texas Is The Reason get called emo bands, but they dont sound anything like what i think of when people say ‘emo’.

as for the communist thing, Ian lives by his principles and i respect the fuck out of that. like i said before, im pretty much on with him about most things.

i mean, just look at how WELL Dischord is run. then compare that to other labels owned by musicians… haha.
