I don’t think it looks bad, I like that the film stock used has three times the normal amount of silver to give it a “futuristic” look. From the trailer it appears to be battle heavy which if done right could be interesting but I would be skeptical. The bit at the end of the trailer looked very like Transformers and that could be a mistake to go down that route.
The director, McG, seems like a goof. (the only good thing he’s done before was capture great shots of Lucy Liu’s arse, type that into youtube and you’ll see) The cast contains no one I dislike (so far) so thats a plus. Bale is a good actor but he does seem to be doing the Batman nasal breathing voice in the trailer. Moon Bloodgood is one hot number (see What Just Happened? and you’ll agree)
I’d say it will be quite different from the first 2 (which themselves were quite different from each other) and thats not necessarily a bad thing as someone like McG just trying to be like Jimmy Cameron would be pathetic. There have been a lot of writers on board which, just like a film with a shit load of producers, can be ominous. Paul Ha[ck]is was involved [mad] but so was Christopher Nolan’s brother (wrote The Dark Knight), who supposedly was the most influential writer involved so maybe there’s hope.
So are people looking forward to this or are they turning their nose in disgust? Any terminator fans out there? Jizz, I know you’re there somewhere.
What I’m really eager to see is Jimmy Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ which is being hyped to “revolutionize” the cinema experience in 3D.
Im a big Terminator fan and i cant wait to see this although i am a bit skeptical myself. For good reason (Rise Of The Machines). Is the Governator going to be in it?
:sigh: another one? isn’t the tv show enough…
mc G is just one of those overblown action directors so i’m betting just lots of explosions and fighting and whatnot… it’s be cool if they got the director and/or writer of enemy at the gates to do it… THAT’D be a interesting take on the whole saga
I liked the McG Charlie’s Angels movie. Of course I saw it pre-sober days and I only remember about 2 minutes, but those two minutes were sexy and full of fun cheesy action shots.
There’s a number of movies I’ll never watch now that I’m sober for fear of ruining the childlike joy I got out of watching them blitzed.
Saw Terminator 3 again last night and it is such a mess. Glaringly obvious the guy who made it, Mostow, was not up to the job. But the story was naff too. It had no hope. And to think it cost somewhere around $150m! Looks like it cost 1/3 of that but Arnie’s wage was probably humongous. No wonder the series completely blanks the existence of T3, not that the series is any great shakes itself (though I haven’t seen the latest season. I might tune in sometime; Summer Glau is smokin and the other one who plays Sarah Connor has a nice arse.)
And no there’s no Arnie in T4. He’s too old to play a lead terminator role but he still could have been worked into it (ie. an obsolete model cameo) but its not happening.
Ive also read there’s a possibility of a love angle between a woman and a terminator [laugh] That could be something alright. Are there many pornos made using the terminator story?

Dude, if there’s an “Edward Penishands” floating around out there, then a few copies of “The Boninator” in circulation is totally plausible.
I liked T3, mostly for the car chase, but I thought it was alright. I remember loving T2 (and Robert Patrick was great as the T1000), but Edward Furlong really stinks up the film with his crappy teenage character. “Cool, my own Terminator!” is a line that just shouldn’t exist.
I watched Terminator 2 today on amc, it was cool and still my favorite movie of all time. Why the fuck doesnt James Cameron just direct every Terminator movie, these other directors have no clue what they are doing and are going to run this thing into the ground. If this next movie blows its official, the Terminator franchise is ruined and cannot be repaired .
Have been looking forward to it for a while and am not disappointed in what I’ve seen. Sure there are some weak points but overall it’s a pretty good blockbuster and a worthy addition to the Terminator series.
The story itself is quite strong, maybe not original but so what. If there is an apparent weakness it might be in the direction (ie. the way some scenes are captured) However with CGI (of which there is a fair bit) scenes often look jittery and rushed on purpose so as to disguise the artificiality. For the most part the special effects were decent. The terminators are done well esp. the T - 600s (the predecessor to the Arnie model), the sound fx for the termintaors was excellent.
One definite strong point is the photography/cinematography. Apt colour scheme used. The landscapes are cool, even the fake ones.
The actors do a good job, no irritating ones (unlike T2 and T3).
For those who want a film just like T2 I don’t think you’re going to get what you want. Firstly it’s set out of a “modern” context (ie. post nuclear war) so you’re not going to get chases in car parks and police stations. You shouldn’t really expect another T1 or T2 as two films is enough. Lesson learned = T3, which was utterly pointless and crap. ‘Terminator: Salvation’ is a logical step forward, if there is one. There is plenty of professionalism gone into this film so don’t worry about serious shortcomings in any important field.
There are some good action scenes. There are also numerous alludes to T1 & T2, mainly the former. ‘You Could Be Mine’ gets a brief spin again as does AIC’s ‘Rooster’ which was a nice surprise… sorry if I just ruined that. The music in general did not seem as emphatic or as, well, brilliant as Fiedel’s work on the first two but the famous “dun dun dun dundun” gets a few spins.
One problem I just remembered is with the penultimate scene; it’s contrived and not captured very well but it doesn’t ruin the film or anything.
I would be critical of T2 fans being snobby towards this film as what is often overlooked is T2 is just an updated (special fx wise) big budget rip off of T1. While T4 could have benefited from a better director (Jim Cameron making it would be something else) it still does the job.
Oh and Moon Bloodgood is hotter than Georgian asphalt!
Hey Mick I slightly disagree with your review man. First of all why do you keep comparing Salvation to T1 and T2, I think its pretty clear by now that the new movies aren’t going to be anything like the first two. Second, you dont really go in depth. The only thing that bothered me about Salvation is the lack of the main charcter’s involvment (Conner) in the movie. And for a movie called the fucking Terminator there really weren’t that many Terminators in the movie (Infiltrators I mean, T-600, T-800).

Well it can be expected to compare it to 1 & 2 as they are held in high regard. I don’t think I made any unfair comparisons (unlike what some others are doing) I didn’t expect it to be like 1 & 2 and stated that people shouldn’t expect it to be in the same mould as the first two. There are many little comparisons to be made however because there are numerous references to the other two throughout the film, esp. another battle scene in a factory at the end.
If you want to debate details of the plot, fine but I don’t think many here would be really bothered. The story is strong enough, despite a few plot holes. The main problem is with the rushed scenes (either bad editing or McG bowed down to studio exec’s to keep the flick under 2 hours).
And there were more terminators in this one than there was in any other film (if you include Marcus Wright). If it’s one on one battles with T-800s you want well you’re aiming in the wrong direction; the focus is much bigger than just Sarah or John running from a terminator in modern LA, its about a resistance movement against a system of machines hence the harvestors and hydrobots and all that (which I thought were kind of cool) so its not going to be “intimate” so to speak.
J Cameron (trying to look like Bill Rieflin) talkin about his new film ‘Avatar’. Bizarre that they are releasing the game before the film. It sounds cool though. Can’t wait
