Into The Void has some of the most inane, un-Sabbath-y lyrics ever. It’s just boring. I don’t see why it’s so highly rated.
Into the Void (Sealth) by Soundgarden is an improvement (IMO) for that reason.
Fucking great riffs tho.

“Here Come the Warm Jets” - Eno
“For Your Pleasure” - Roxy Music
“A Wizard, A True Star” - Todd Rundgren
“Unknown Pleasures” - Joy Division
“I’m Your Man” - Leonard Cohen
“English Settlement” - XTC
“Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space” - Spiritualized
“The Soft Bulletin” - The Flaming Lips
“Loveless” - My Bloody Valentine
“Grace” - Jeff Buckley
Great selection, though I’m not much of a Flaming Lips man. I should have included “Warm Jets” on mine, that’s been a favorite of mine for many years. Strangely, considering what a big fan of early era Eno, I’ve only just plugged into old Roxy, damn it’s good stuff! Why had I never listened before??
[reply]I’ve heard his latest album is actually heavy though. Read a review that said its his best since No More Tears.
That’s not saying much.

Well if it makes you feel better Grmpy, I also HATE Primus.
And don’t even get me started on Queensryche.

I had a guy buy me Queensryche’s ‘Empire’ for my 18th.
Man it was terrible - like really, really terrible.
I never got that band.
Is it like ‘serious’ hair metal - as ‘Adult Contemporary Hair Metal’???

I don’t know. I was in 8th grade. I loved it! I liked the guy’s voice, I liked the riffs, I liked the Chugging base line in “Jet City Woman,” I liked the Lyrics and the sound of the “Empire” Track, I Liked the soft Melody in “Silent Lucidity”, I Liked the loneliness of “Anybody listening?” What else is there?

What else is there? Sux you guys can’t hear it but not surprising considering some of your musical tastes. Your loss.
Damn Grmpy!
You just had to end that post on a downer!!

Yeah thanks for ‘theater of pain’ grmpy whatever that first track is )can’t remember nam,e of it either right now is great! also grmpy i want to know what you think of ‘chinese democracy’?
To get alittle off topic i was watching the ‘hotrod’ video and was wondering if that was Danny Lohner driving the truck in the begining. I know that sounds crazy but think about it, danny is from texas Al was spending alot of time there then, Danny prior to NIN was in Skrew Paul and Al worked on a couple of tracks on there first album (Skrew) and fuck it looks Just like him. For those who don’t know danny was the second guitar player, bassist occasional key guy in NIN 94-03 the shorter guy in the ‘march of the pigs’ video

You’re on your own there. I don’t remember track names for the crue!

I like it alright, but it doesn’t sound like a guns record to me. Some of the songs are really good(“Better” “IRS” “Catcher In The Rye”) but it’s not fluid. Those 3 songs are probably the best the album has to offer! You can tell Axl pieced it all together. The majority of the solos don’t go with the chord progressions. the riffs don’t really go with the songs.
They are all good as pieces but not necessarily good together. I could just see axl telling bumblefoot or Buckethead, paul Huge or what ever guitarist was in that day “ok go into the booth and play a solo for 30 minutes at 120 BPM and I’ll cut and paste what I want and use it where ever I want.”
The solo for “This I Love” is Horrific! then you take the fact that Axl is whining all the way through the song makes it almost unlistenable. Be nice if he included Just a Piano version of the song as I like the Piano in it.
Really, it comes off as a pop album. Like something I would expect from Linkin Park. Axl just put it together like one would a collage or a mosaic. no chemistry, no feel… Axl’s voice is barely the only thing guns related (especially if we’re talking TIL).
Supposedly he has like some 40 songs recorded and he’s going to release two more albums over 4 years…We’ll see if that happens. Problem is, is that AXl is not a song writer, He’s a decent lyricist and and excellent singer when he’s in form, but the guy can’t write a song to save his life!
Izzy Stradlin shits all over him as a song writer and we all know how I feel about Slash! Kinda wish Izzy and Slash would team back up (I don’t think much of Duff as a musician either, so I think Slash still has way better stuff in him if he would just collaborate with IZZY again!)
Speaking of Duff looks like He might be the new Jane’s Addiction Bassist… He’s writing music with the band right now.

Aceyalone “A Book Of Human Language”
David Byrne & Brian Eno “My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts”
Godflesh “Songs Of Love & Hate”
Rezillos “Can’t Stand The Rezillos”
James Brown’s Funky People Vol 1
King Tubby’s Meets Rockers Uptown
Amon Tobin “Permutation”
Freestyle Fellowship “Inner City Griots”
Akron/Family “Love Is Simple”
Brian Eno “Here Come The Warm Jets”
I better throw in my disagree 2 cents too…Guns’n’Roses are absolutely horrible!!!
Animal Collective’s “Strawberry Jam” poops all over “Merriweather Post Pavillion” imo… if you want to get really technical, Panda Bear’s solo “Person Pitch” OWNS all the Animal Collective output. He should just leave Animal Collective and concentrate on his own work as Animal Collective has gone very stale indeed.
Yeah, i don’t really see it as a gun’s record either try judging it in your mind as just “chinese democracy” like that was the name of the group and dissassociate it from g n r. I agree with most surprisingly with the no slash no guns, but on it’s own it’s a pretty good record and yeah it def has a cut and paste with the gtrs. feel but, being a former Robin Finck fan i had to give it a chance.
p.s. the electronics on it are a fuckin’ joke

The first Crue album is Too Fast For Love.
First song off the album is Live Wire. Happens to be one of my fav. Crüe songs ever!

Every word of this is too true.
No it isn’t.
Strawberry Jam was something of a misstep for them - a very average album. Merriweather is genius.
But top marks on the Eno selection.
And Akbar…no Beefheart?!?
tsk tsk.
Godflesh “Songs Of Love & Hate”
You could’ve just listed this and been done with it.
Approval.

I already do that! I know what ya’ mean.

I’d even go so far as to say that it needs Izzy on the record too. I think those three are the core elements of GNR. IZZY wrote their songs Slash laid down the killer leads and Axl wrote and sang the lyrics.
Absolutely, it’s a decent record. The thing is, is that it took 10+ years to come out Axl mega hyped it and Linkin Park coulda cranked something like that out in 14 months! I think the circumstances surrounding it’s creation and eventual release are what taint the thing! If you can ignore all of that then yeah it’s a good offering. After 10+ years each song shoulda had Stairway to heaven power. but they don’t!
p.s. the electronics on it are a fuckin’ joke
That would be Dizzy Reed! He’s one of the contributing factors to the breakup of GNR. Axl brought him into the band with out even consulting the other members. Slash and Duff were pretty pissed. The last straw for Slash was the Sympathy for the Devil Single. Axl Brought in Paul Huge and had him over dub Slash’s guitar parts with out even telling Slash. Slash had to hear it at the recording studio after the fact!

Y’know this is so true. I’ve listened to a stream of the entire album online - as one or two G’n’R songs are guilty pleasures - and found it hard to connect this album with Gun’s’Roses as we know it. It sounds so fabricated and derivative. Even the piano ballads sound like they were composed using a computer program. It’s as if Axl has fallen out of love with real instruments - either that or he’s lost all confidence in himself as a bandleader and prefers to let a software program make all the decisions.
And yes, the electronics are a ‘fucking joke’.
The whole album sounds like a Filter/Linkin Park/Elton John hybrid.
I bought Use Your Illusion I & II just last week, having never heard them before.
I must say I’m really enjoying them, especially II.
