This is excellent news. I am not sure how it will sound without Jarboe involved (middle period Swans being my favorite for them), but the inclusion of Norm Westerberg is a plus! I cannot see it being as a return to the heaviness of the beginning of Swans, but who knows maybe Gira and company will surprise us.
Fucking Brilliant! This is just what I wanted and what music needs, thanks LordPiko.
Now am really stoked. I do hope however that it will be Swans and not M. Gira or Angels of Light under the name of Swans, i.e. lose the higher pitched nasal whine Michael.
We’re back in business.
I’m sure Gira will indeed surprise everyone.
I’m in favor of any recorded output from Gira, though I’m skeptical about reviving Swans. I agree that this had better not just be AoL songs under the Swans name. Hopefully they’ll tour too. Thanks for sharing!

To be honest I didn’t think the upcoming Godflesh thing was going to happen…then when it was confirmed I was sure it’d just be jesu doing Godflesh songs. I was wrong.
I’m now thinking that Swans will indeed be Swans. I’m not too fussed about Jarboe being there as I’m sure this incarnation wasn’t brought back to do the mellow Swans stuff…I think they’ve been brought back to friggin devastate the world.
How’s this for a killer tour…
Swans and Godflesh as support.
Never thought this would happen! Gira seemed to like the idea of it/them being dead. Not a big Jarboe fan (voice reminds me a bit of the Cowardly Lion sometimes), but i love the late 80’s and early '90s
stuff (Love of Life, etc…). Plus, Goddamn the Sun
is an amazing piece of work.

Pretty sure he’ll just be continuing with the mellow stuff. Picking up exactly where Soundtracks of the Blind left off. I prefer later Swans over the the early stuff anyway. I like it all, but i’m into the more focused, and I guess, more “conventional” material. White Light at the Mouth of Infinity is easily my favorite Swans album.

Toot you need to stop booking flights, and start booking tours my man!! Sheer brilliance. [:)] [:)]
A Swans + Godflesh combo would more than make up for the time I was shafted out of seeing Godflesh open for Skinny Puppy due to some work visa crap.
I’d travel to see that.
A request! My copy of “Love of Life” has vanished. Anyone here have a copy they can upload?
And yes, i paid for mine!!
Thanks…

I also lost my copy of Love Of Life…many many years ago.
I made up for it by buying ‘Various Failures’ - an album I recommend to every single user on this forum.
Even grmpy.

by the swans I’m assuming? never even heard of them until I got here, but other than that I’m not familiar with them what-so-ever… maybe give em ago if I ever get back to Amoeba.

Grmp, ‘Various Failures’ is the best place to start. It is an epic collection. It takes much from ‘White Light From the Mouth of Infinity’ (maybe their best LP, ask Toot about that one) and other bits and pieces.
No luck on ‘Love of Life’ lads, I’m afraid. I could do with a copy myself.

You’d never heard of Swans?
wow!
Approach with caution. As much as I obsess over them they are a difficult band to recommend.
Just checked out various failures - great stuff on that! Those interested should at least check out the song samples on Young God’s site. Sadly, those albums are WAY oop. White Light for $250? Uh, no. I do have the other ones, though besides love of life. My problem is, i have over 1,000 cds in a storage unit. Have you ever been looking for ONE cd and, after the 3rd time of scouring your collection, finally find it? Having OCD doesn’t help either! The quest continues…
It really irritates me that they haven’t properly re-issued “White Light” “Love of Life” and the live one from that era. I used to have all of them, but I sold my CDs to buy music equipment a decade ago. I wish I still had those three as they’re really the only Swans I find essential. “Various Failures” cuts out too much and I’ve always assumed they’re going to reissue those albums as originally played so I don’t want to invest in something incomplete.
Godflesh opening for Swans? I was never sure which act is more popular. They both seem pretty underground. I’ve heard the early Swans heavy shit and the heaviest tracks on ‘Children of God’ (awesome album btw) and seen live video, but they must have been truly devastating if Godflesh could be the opener and not overshadow them.
grmpysmrf your tastes in music tend to run more “mainstream” than most on this board (and I’m with you on that sometimes…like with Marilyn Manson), but I think Swans is something you will definitely enjoy. It’s very musical, yet experimental. Not like a Merzbow type deal where noise and sound is the prime focus. There is always a groove, vocals, drums, something to latch on to. Much more rock oriented. At times soft and beautiful, at times crushing and heavy.

Great, thanks for the run down! anything posted on youtube that you can suggest so that I can get an idea for what they sound like?
