Sunn O))) : Monoliths & Dimensions

Fucking A!!!

American “drone metal” act SUNN O))) will release its new album, “Monoliths & Dimensions”, on May 5 via Southern Lord. Described by the band as “probably the most musical piece we’ve done and also the heaviest, powerful and most abstract set of chords we’ve laid to tape,” the LP — the band’s seventh — was recorded during 2007 and 2008 with Randall Dunn and features a host of collaborators, including Eyvind Kang, Oren Ambarchi, Jessika Kenney, Attila Csihar and Dylan Carlson, among others.

“Monoliths & Dimensions” track listing is as follows:

  1. Aghartha
  2. Big Church
  3. Hunting & Gathering (Cydonia)
  4. Alice

SUNN O))) will also make a special, one-off appearance at London’s Corsica Studios on February 22, with the core duo Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson performing their 1998 debut “The Grimmrobe Demos”.

Any other Sunn O))) fanatics here (aside from me)?

I’ve only heard some of Sunn O))), think it was a recent album. I couldn’t find much to like about it though, it didn’t “progress” enough; what I mean by that is it the songs were very long but didn’t change or develop. I like low heavy droning guitars but I prefer if the songs move around a bit not just the same tempo and minimal notes for very long periods. But that was only one album I heard.

What do you recommend as their best work?

That new album sounds like it might be more what I’m looking for.

I really enjoy hearing Sunn on a proper hi-fi system. I guess that is a problem with the band - the music cant be appreciated unless you have the opportunity to really devote yourself fully to it.

I wouldn’t call myself a fanatic but Im definitely a fan.

With this said, I still think Esoteric’s latest album pretty much outclasses anything in the so called ultradoom category.

yeah, that is a lot of the issues involved in Sunn’s work, i mean you really just gotta be there, and FEEL it, not so much ‘hear’ it.

indeed, and considering how much is going on in sub-bass frequencies, a lot of people are actually missing out large portions of the experience entirely.

kinda wish kim thayil was on this too. i liked him on Altar

I know Oren quite well. He lives in Melbourne and mixes in some of the same circles as myself. Top bloke - very kind and humble. Always willing to sign a record.

Can’t wait for this too. Well…actually, I can wait - there’s plenty of other good stuff on the horizon before May.

Too any newcomers, check out the extended japanese versions of Sunn O))) 's back catalogue (available at Inoxia Records). The bonus disc that comes with OO Void is a Nurse With Wound remix which is nothing short of exemplary.

Altar is probably the most listener friendly.

I’m really lookin’ forward to this one - as well as the new Mastodon.

It’s a shame, there doesn’t seem to be much love for Sunn O))) on this forum.

they got a really cool limited version of the new mastodon cd on sale on their website… if i had the money to kill it’d totally be getting that…

I really like the album ‘Black One’, but a lot of this stuff is just too plodding and boring for me most of the time. I’ll have to check out ‘Altar’.

I like what they do with vocals. It would be cool to hear drums as well in the mix. I just think they need something more to fill out their sound.

But I understand that being minimal is probably the point. Because they are doing something totally unique and have a signature sound.

I’ve been meaning to check these guys out for a while now. I’m in love with the whole dronal metal kinda stuff like Jesu, Godflesh, Halo, and what little I’ve heard of Isis. Think I might wanna snag this bitch.
