but Leonard McCoy was Bad ASS! Man, that actor Was De Forest Kelley Incarnate! I was giggling all the way through the movie cause he even had De Forest Kelley’s SPeech patterns Down!
As a fan of the old Star Trek I liked this movie and the casting was fantastic! Except for the role of spock! He looked enough like him but the character development out of him was terrible! TOO emotional, He NEVER had a thing with Ohura. Spocks Vulcan Planet was never destroyed as far as I Remember AND Spock’s mom is still alive as seen in Star Trek 4 the voyage home, when the computer asks spock how he feels and spock doesn’t understand the question and his mom comes in and says "the computer knows that your are half human… … … "
But other than that the movie is solid and BAD ASS!!! The casting was fantastic and the story was pretty good I just can’t get over how well everybody looked and acted like their counter parts 40 years prior! What’s funny about kirk is this new actor is a much better actor than shatner(I know not hard to do, but shatner had and still has charisma) but he looks like he could’ve been shatner in his youth and you could totally believe that he will go on to captain the 1966 enterprise.

I was thinking two things about this problem: because spock is half human he’s still maturing as a vulcan and still wrestling between the human side and the vulcan side OR the studio made them throw in the love interest between spock and ohura or better yet a combination of the two they were planning on having spock be an immature vulcan and the studio came in ans said “love interest! Now!”

I don’t know grmpy, I think they did an interesting job showing the human/vulcan duality of Spock. He joined Star Fleet as a big fuck you to the Vulcan High Council when they considered him handicapped by being half-human. Its not exactly the Spock we know and love, but I’d give it time to see what they do with the character. As far as the love interest with Uhura, maybe she just needed some green-blooded love, and a neck pinch [;)]
You’re right though Karl Urban was the embodiment of Bones McCoy my favorite actor in the film. I too was surprised by how good the cast was, a very solid sci-fi film. Eric Bana was great as the bad guy, and I had no idea that was him until the credits.
The whole destruction of Vulcan, and Spock’s mother dying is entirely new. The film plays out so that they can continue making new films without worrying about treading over the stories that came before it in the tv series and other movies. Essentially they’ve made an alternate history of Star Trek. It makes me wonder what they are going to do with the Klingons.

Well, several things, i agree the vulcan/human duality was definitely a great angle to play BUT they played the human angle too much, not enough vulcan! I really think that the love angle was forced upon them by the studio because your right it’s not the spock we know and love and I guess that’s what doesn’t sit well with me… all of the other characters I can completely see going on to become the 1960’s cast. They had the manerisms, the speech patterns Fer chrisakes, and the character traits. but Spock’s character is the only one that does not fit. How did he go from that whiny little pussy to the highly logical no feeling mr spock that we grew up with? Doesn’t work… that’s the hardest part for me with the movie… all of the other inconsistencies are easy for me to dismiss (Vulcan exploding, spocks mom dying…minor details…)

Need I say again, ME TOO! I think bones was my favorite from the old episodes as well cause he was such a mean old bastard, so full of alien prejudice but yet he was supposed to be a lover of species shown by his chosen profession… a doctor! who wants a mean old bastard for a doctor? too funny!
Eric Bana was great as the bad guy, and I had no idea that was him until the credits.
I thought he was Guillermo Diaz From Weeds and Half Baked (even lost a bet to my wife!)

Yeah apparently that’s pissing alot of the purists off! My dad refuses to see it because they have started a new timeline and are shitting all over the stories that came before it in order to draw in a new audience! I tried telling him they are minor details that he has to forgo but I don’t think I convinced him. He doesn’t go to conventions or speak any of those made up languages but man oh man does he love star trek! I think you could classify him as one of those super fans that loves the show but hates all of those people that ruin the literature of it by dressing up like Tards. For that, we are on the same thought process!

Nevermind that pointy eared bastard, Uhura is where the action is.
You don’t seem to understand that this film takes place in an alternate timeline due to the machinations of Nero.
As a result, Spock in the new film has gone through things Spock in the old film never had to. It was always a struggle for old Spock to keep his emotions in check - it’s that much more of a struggle for new Spock, who got his planet blown up and his mom killed in his arms.

i felt the same way, but the above is true. i got over it. the film was amazing, and i will second your love of the guy who played mccoy. awesome stuff. i even heard a tribble!

No, I understand all of that. but I say again… continuity wise (In this specific movie)it is out of place for everyone else to be themselves and have Spock be so drastically different. Why not have some other characters be a different personality as well? how come just Spock? All of the other actors had their counterparts mannerisms down pat. Spock pretty much looked like a young Leonard Nimoy and that was the ONLY resemblence to Spock there was.
It just seems wrong to have the STAPLE character, that everyone knows, even if they never watched any star trek, be the only personality that is different!! Even more to my point, Spock was a whiny little emotional bitch all of the way through the fim, and he didn’t see mommy and planet die until nearly the end, why was he PMSing early on in the film then?
As far as NORMAL spock always having trouble keeping his emotions in check,
I never saw that. Unless he had been taken over by some spore or virus or what not. He was always very cold, logical, and critical.

i’m so glad i cannot commit to being a star
trek/spock nerd.
i liked the movie.i felt pretty uncomfortable with the spock character, only because i kept wanting to think his human eyebrows could have been concealed a litlle better.
yes. i bow my head.
gay.
I thouht the film was quite cool.
I thought the Heroes bad guy that played Spock was perfect and nailed the part.
Bones dude was good too.
All in all it was a decent blockbuster and I look forward to nailing it on Blu-ray.
This film kicked Terminators ass and I’m sure it’ll do the same to this lame Transformers sequel coming.

Oh yeah! don’t let my spock babble fool you! definitely a damn good story and super impressive bit of actors
Let me clean this next part up for ya’

Sadly some people did?
Personally I thought it was fucking dull. Plus I saw Die Hard 4 a few days earlier and that was kick ass which made Transformers seem even more pish.
