South America

Never been there and is a shame as I’ve been living in N. America for the past 8-9 years and S. America is only a short plane ride away.

I’m thinking of embarking on a trip starting at Buenos Aeros, to Santiago and then to Lima, Peru where the final destination will be Machu Picchu. Hopefully this will be in the next couple of weeks.

I was curious to see if anyone on this forum has been to either of those places or currently lives there. My Spanish is pathetically limited, but I think I’ll be fine in the big cities - it’s the small towns that I would really love to see though communication will be very limited I am sure.

Any suggestions as to where I should go or what I should do once there?

know someone who’s been to machu picchu. keep you posted.i’ll put in a call.

If you go to Peru, watch out for the Hovitos.

i envy you’re ability to travel. I’m going to the “Smoky Mountains” in two weeks with my chick. That’s a big thing for me to get away like that. Hell, i have not had a complete week (no work Mon-Fri) off from my job in 6 years. needless to say I’m righteously burnt the fuck out.

The big trip i want to take is to Rome. The beginning of western civilization. Gothic architecture.

I really want to travel to Mexico City sometime. I watched that HD food show on PBS with Rick Bayless, and the cuisine looked amazing. Pretty cool nightlife there, too, apparently. Jamaica is actually on my hit list next.

only country in south america i’ve been to is brazil. lots of bands go there who have some clout.and they don’t speak spanish–portuguese.
as far as mexico, been to mexico city and taxco and saw some mexican temples which were awesome and not well kept b/c there’s no money for that there.
still working on that question for you, afra. the guy i know who went there is kinda hard to keep up with.(not a shock)

American life eh? Live to work. And for what? Though I hear ya. I have to leave the country for 2-3 weeks every year otherwise I’d go mad. Need to recharge batteries. Europeans get 4 weeks and more usually… I’m more used to that.

I recommend Jamaica to anyone. Great place

I hear jamaica is horrible…

You can’t go anywhere without the natives pan handling and it’s just a very sad scene with all of the poverty tthere and you leave hating yourself… I’ve heard this several times, any truth to it?

It can be rough. My friend from high school in England worked there for the fun of it. He did get mugged once but he was there for 2 years. I went to visit him and we didn’t hang at resort. Why leave the US then if we just wanted margaritas by the pool? So we ventured out. It was fine. You had to be cautious but even in Chicago you do. So whatever. If you look and act like a dumb tourist then sure… But then you’re asking for it. I found the locals
to be extremely friendly and unique. I’d go there again. It is poor but I’m used to that from visiting third world countries. Usually Jamaica gets a bad rep for the violence but I didn’t see it.

But it’s odd like that. My father lives in South Africa and you hear all these stories but I wandered alone and it was fine. They car jack you in broad daylight for your car in the middle of traffic. I was at the bus station in Johannesburg, one of the most dangerous cities in the world, and a white couple approached me asking for a few dollars. They said they were mugged a few hours earlier and I saw about 12 stitches on his head and his girlfriend was badly bruised. It was awful. White South Africans. Then I got a bit worried but I guess luck has kept me safe. I’m sure that couple walked in the wrong area. The problem was the cops just took care of the whites and when the apartheid was over, they had to take care of everyone and were overwhelmed

that would make sense that the very poor & desperate would hang around the resorts looking for tips and hand outs. where the not so desperate would be going on about their daily lives away from the resorts.
