First became interested in Marc Almond after hearing his rendition of Nico’s “Janitor of Lunacy” on X-TG ‘Desertshore’.
Then became extremely interested after reading ‘Tainted Life’ his autobiography which was suggested by Gunnar. I cannot recommend this book enough. It really grabbed me. The guy can seriously write and I identified with a lot of what he had to say.
Now I’ve begun listening to Soft Cell and am hearing a lot of stuff I really like, especially tracks like “Memorabilia”, “Bedsitter” and “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye” which despite the melodramatic oh-so-eighties camp of them, are absolute gems to my ears. And of course “Tainted Love”…
After reading the book I feel I really connect with this guy and he’s got a fantastic, emotive voice. I’m not sure what I’ll check out next but I’m excited to be this excited about an artist I’d overlooked.
Thoughts? Suggestions on what to check out next?
Mother Fist and Her Five Daughters…get it now…
In fact,anything from 85-89 is essential…
Stars We Are and Jacques also being particular faves…
He did a record with Foetus also…
Soft Cell is a great band. Tainted Love, one of my favorite 80s songs.
The Non-stop Erotic Cabaret album is brilliant, one of my favorites. I’ve heard the other albums and they are great, still need to pick those up.
I also have Marc Almond’s Tenement Symphony. Found that one at a pawn shop almost 20 years ago. Been a fan ever since.
What I like about Soft Cell is that they became new wave pop stars thanks to Tainted Love, but they were really part of the post-punk/industrial/performance art/bondage/occult scene of early '80s England along with Psychic TV, Coil, Current 93, etc.

Coil’s cover of Tainted Love was really good
I think I have a really low quality audio bootleg of The Immaculate Consumptives, but it’s honestly one of those things that is better in your imagination than it is in reality. Or maybe you just had to be there.

That song is badass.
I don’t know if I’d really call him a one hit wonder, since he’s really better known for The Buzzcocks.
