So... Tom Petty, anyone?

RIP at 66

Is he actually dead now? I keep seeing differing reports.

I liked him as a casual fan. I didn’t care for his more ‘country-fried’ material, but he wrote some great rock songs - “Refugee”, “You Got Lucky”, “A Face In The Crowd”, and “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around”. His band played one of the better sets at Live Aid in '85. I didn’t care for The Traveling Wilburys. Petty just wrapped up his 40th Anniversary Tour not more than a week ago. It’s surreal seeing musicians die that were staples on MTV when I was a kid.

Crazy news day, that’s for sure.

Grew up listening to this guy. He was awesome.

RIP

I enjoyed his stuff. Petty was basically my first concert in 1983.

I wasn’t a megfan, but Southern Accents was one of my favorite albums in high school.

Tom Petty is one of those dudes that, even if you weren’t a superfan, you probably still liked him. He just seemed like such a rad dude. And his music was very accessible to everyone, so whether you were a punk, metalhead, stoner, hippie, emo kid… you probably still liked Tom Petty. So it was always good shit to put on for a party or some situation where you needed a common denominator.

I wasn’t a superfan either. But I always dug the dude and am sorry to see him go… or is he alive again? I’ve not checked FB yet.

Sorry to learn of his passing yesterday. He had just played three shows at the Hollywood Bowl to conclude his 40th anniversary tour.

I liked how he experimented with synths in his 1985 album “Southern Accents.” I remember an interview on MTV where Petty explained that David Stewart of the Eurythmics wanted to produce his next record, and the result was “Southern Accents” and the hit single “Don’t Come Around Here No More.”

I had no idea Dave Stewart produced that one. I loved the videos from that album, especially “Don’t Come Around Here No More”

Very sad news overall. He was a great musician.

Same here and he was an absolutely amazing songwriter. One of those kinda guys that the songs just seemed to come so naturally to him.
Was very surprised to learn he nursed a heroin habit 20 years ago (while nearing his fifties, no less!), I need to get his book.

Fav is “I Need to Know”.

He’s in the beginning of the video, on top of a mushroom:

There are very few top 40 acts that I can remember having cross over appeal like Top Petty did. Back in the hey day of my Industrial, Metal, Alternative, Punk etc days, you could always find some Tom Petty in my Case Logic CD books. Heck, everyone I knew at least owned his Greatest hits. He wasn’t a sell out, or an ass kiss. He did what he did and was fantastic at it.

The Heart breakers were the best bar band of all time. RIP

RiP Tom Petty. Another casual fan. I have 4 of his albums, have listened to him for a long time. His songs always make me feel better.
