So Marilyn Manson did a cover of "Stigmata"

This would have been more at home on an old Spooky Kids demo…

I don’t think they really have much in common anymore.
Manson’s found his own swagger in my opinion.

The band was tight and pretty awesome all the way from the initial Spooky Kids demos until the Holy Wood album.

I like some of the post Holy Wood material, but to me they are solo albums from the singer Marilyn Manson. Definitely not band efforts, and it shows.[/reply]

More or less agree. For some reason I loved everything that Daisy Berkowitz was attached to. “Mechanical Animals” was the peak for me.

“Mechanical Animals” was the peak for me.

Absolutely. Me too. He hasnt gotten anywhere close to repeating that kind of song writing or lyrical success.

i agree. that is a great record. may even be in my top ten. everything was tuned in for them. visuals. music. intensity.

Holy Wood was the pinnacle for me…

Holy Wood was the pinnacle for me…

Same here.

i’m sipping scotch* this afternoon, so forgive me for getting emo… this is what i like about this board, is when we can talk about opinions, of rock culture - and people don’t lose their minds.

I also like that i get tipped ff to the obscure album releases that i’m not sure i would find out on my own. keep it up fellas, i enjoy the knowledge sharing.

Enjoy…I’m hungover from the PIG show last night. He went on at 1:15AM to 2:45AM. Got home a 4AM.

Ooooooooof!!! As if i needed anymore official reminders that I’m old. That sounds like a young person’s time slot.

The last one I thought was really good was Golden Age. Holy Wood was good, it just felt like a rebound back to AC

Probably why I liked it so much…

Same here. It was sort of like Antichrist Superstar, but with some Mechanical Animals thrown in for good measure. Not as strong as either album, and at times it almost sounds like left over tracks from those two albums.

Not a big fan of Golden Age. Apart from the title track and Para-noir, it’s a paint by numbers of one particular style of song. No slow songs, no soul, no substance. I think the entire band was credited for this one, but basically sounds like a Tim Skold production with Manson singing.

Maybe that’s why I liked Golden Age. It was a ton of style and just fun songs. I was a bit tired of the whole tryptich thing or reading about it.

Since we’re talking covers, one of my favorite Manson covers came out during the Holy Wood sessions - “Suicide is Painless”

I was always partial to Manson’s cover of Burning Inside.

Well OK it was a more of a ripoff than a cover.

‘Astonishing Panorama Of The End Times’ which wasn’t on a album, only on EP.

Fun video though.

I’ve never really thought those two songs sounded as similar as people make them out to be (though I suppose musically it’s a better argument than the ‘Pretty Hate Machine is basically a Skinny Puppy covers album’ stuff). I hear just as much if not more similarities between his track “Angel With the Scabbed Wings” and Faith No More’s “Jizzlobber” but nobody ever seems to mention that one

Somebody recently pointed out to me as well that “Irresponsible Hate Anthem” bears some similarities so Big Black’s “Jordan, Minnesota” which I never noticed before but can’t unhear it now, especially knowing what an influence Albini was on the old Spooky Kids shit

Anyhoo, I’m with the crowd who feels everything from Spooky Kids (Lunchboxes and Choklit Cows is an essential comp) up to and including Holy Wood is amazing but that everything after that varies wildly between pretty damn good and completely forgettable depending on the song

I saw him open for Slipknot a while back because I got free tickets and Manson’s set was the saddest display I’ve ever seen. Stumbling drunk and constantly losing his balance, going off-meter, voice cracking, forgetting lyrics, knocking stuff over so much that stagehands had to come help him every thirty seconds, some of the stage effects ‘broke’ (aside from them having an extremely cramped stage space where half the band was downstage because there was literally no room for them - I’ve been to bar shows with more stage space, and this was an arena show) and ranting between every song about how awesome it is to be in Boston when the show wasn’t in fucking Boston. I knew he was a mess but it was still a little disillusioning.
All I could think of was Spinal Tap’s pathetic and ill-fated concert on the Simpsons. “Goodnight, Springton! There will be no encore!”

Yeah, I haven’t seen Manson in years, but he gets pretty fucked up nowadays. The first time I saw him was in 1996 on Ozzfest, I went in with no knowledge about him, other than the ridiculous Antichrist Superstar title of the album. He played during the day and got the crowd so furious they threw stuff at him and yelled at him the whole set. They really lost it when the bible got ripped up or whatever book it was. I’ve seen few performers be so hated, the crowd stayed to watch him.
