al left the arena a very long time ago.
i went to the skinny puppy show in LA and it was the best live show i’ve seen in years.AND ogre was honestly, TOTALLY sober.unlike others who profess their allegiance to sobriety and end up on youtube.
skinny puppy/ministry=apples/hairy artichokes.love both bands equally.
what they put out (or anyone) is what matters.
6/10?!?!?
That’s being remarkably generous.
For me, personally, it’s a big fat 2.
Had a read of some of the reviews floating around the net (mostly from laughable sites with names like ‘Skullring’ or ‘Metal Roolz’ !!!) and couldn’t believe some of the positive press it was receiving.
But these are from people who probably think that Megadeth are ‘bitchin and gnarly’ and have Iron Maiden patches sewn onto the backs of their denim jackets.
The Last Sucker is an embarrasment. I’d sooner purchase the new Paul Stanley offering than this ham fisted heavy metal crud.
Definitely beer coaster material.
yeah but their review for RGB was surprisingly positive with 6.4 points.
At least it wasnt a 3 or something!
Whats Phil up to? Geez I thought he only spoke to Revolver. I missed Down playing here, opening for Heaven and Hell… I didn’t want to pay the price to see Dio sing Sabbath songs… not a huge fan of Sabbath post-Ozzy… Was hoping down would do a side show.
6/10 is a little too generous…
I’ve decided I like Houses, overall - upon closer listening there’s really a lot there. I’ll consider it the last hurrah before the “Al Jourgenson Project.”
That’d make “Walrus” the last Ministry song, then, and I can deal with that.
I’ve only just started listening to Houses, I’m really digging a lot of it. It doesn’t really seem that thrashy to me, maybe No W of course and Warp City… tracks like World and Wrong aren’t really thrash at all…
WTV sucks though. Bad end to the Tv Song series.
HOTM, to me is psalm 69 pt. 2 with a dash of punk influence. The thrash comes in with RGB, imo.
yeah but their review for RGB was surprisingly positive with 6.4 points.
That’s bad for a Pitchfork review. A decent grade would start at around 7.5 on that site.
Still, 6.4 for RGB is a little too generous. I’m surprised they didn’t trash it like they did Rantology.
Stay tuned for the ‘Ministry is awesome’ reviews courtesy of the user comments on amazon. It’s due to begin any day now:
“Their best album since Psalm 69…”
“Ministry haven’t sounded so good since…”
“I can’t believe the band wants to call it quits on such a high note…”
“Ministry shows they still have the ability to conquer…”
“Al Jourgenson is a genius, pure and simple…”
Not two long ago I played the new album in my car which was full of guys who were Ministry fans in the early nineties. After three or four tracks, one of them finally piped up and said ‘Is this Ministry?? God this is awful? Are they even still around??’ Then there was silence for a minute or two…then someone else said ‘Surely you’ve something else to put on? This is pathetic’.
I think that sums it up quite nicely.
That’s quite sad indeed. Although i bet those same guys have quite a few questionable records i n their collection. But yes it is sad to think a band like Ministry is now thought of as pathetic by people who were once “big” fans?
I actually have a friend whose pretty into the bush trilogy. While I lived with him, I got him into HOTM and RGB. Recently I played him TLS. May not be my ideal albums, but Al can still attract a few new ones, I guess. But so far, what ministry I have played for my friends, it’s always been a little positive, and I never really played any of the older stuff either, except for “Everyday is Halloween”; too 80s for one of my friends, but one of my favorites.
A little off-topic, but oh well.
I had a similar “car experience” with a friend back when “Dark Side” came out. He’d loved “Psalm” and his reaction to “DTOTS” was definitely negative and vocal. Ah well, no accounting for taste.
Now that I think about it, I played a few songs from DSOTS to a couple of friends. The extra/secret track to many, heh. But I remember getting a few friends to listen to Step and Eureka Pile. Not too sure what they think. They play Jesus Built My Hotrode and So What and some cocks pretty often at the bar I frequent. Friends seem to like those. And rarely, since the bartender knows i’m fan, he occasionally plays some Twitch. Unspoken requests, I guess, heh.
I know there are hundreds of posts on here about how much ministry has sucked since HOTM but seriously, I’m depresed about how much this band has fallen since aninmositisominia.
I mean I know animostistisomina wasn’t the greatest Ministry album ever released but I always thought it was a good example of a band reaching their later years without becoming a self parodory or mockery of what they once were.
Then house’s of the moly came around and Ministry’s record of consistently releasing decent records was ruined. Then Rio Grande Blood came out and the band just became flat out terrible.
I’m writing this because of how terrible that youtuble video of jourgenson playing the beatles was. I mean WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT! It was awful. I never would have thought five years ago his music would has sunk that low. He’s like the Jar Jar bink’s bink’s of industrial music now.
I don’t care how much “let’s go” sound like “the missing”, Ministry needs to stop ruining their discography. I can’t even listen to ministry’s older albums anymore because I go off on this mental rant about how disappointed I am with the band.
[pirate][shocked]
You are dillusional [mad] …Jourgensen’s last 3 Ministry LPs and his latest Revco is some of the finest music I own, pal. How dare you talk such lame stupid shit about a living legend who has lived 3 lifetimes of musical greatness from gothy synth-pop nuwaver to industrial-disco postpunk to alterna-industrial/hardcore metal.
Jourgensen has never failed, not even once in his illustrious lengthy career. Even Dark Side of the Spoon (album considered to be a bomb by many) is a beautiful fucking masterpiece.
Another thing, he looked like an enchanting gothic cowboy when he performed that Beatles track with Cheap Trick (another awesome band, mind you). His guitar work and vocals on that song are terrific.
What the hell is the matter with you? You deserve to be physically mutilated for talking such ludicrous trash about our hero. You’re a fucking maggot and you will pay for this slander by the virtues of the karmic universe.
Go back inside your cave you pathetic fool. You don’t deserve to be among us devouted Jourgensen Disciples.
Be Gone! [sly][cool]
lol, i can sense an impending flame war
His guitar work and vocals on that song are terrific.
he and sin ruined the song. the vocals are horrendous and totally off-key.
and i think you’ll better fit on pissarmy.
Admittedly, Al has been mentioning in interviews recently that they just got drunk and destroyed that song. So hey, at least he achieved that…
I still think that the way to cover that song using the metal aesthetic is the way Coroner did it on “Mental Vortex”. And sadly, Ministry will never be Coroner, in terms of thrash metal quality, but then again I am not sure they want to…
yet people seem really intimidated by him. It’s such rampant infantilism. I detect a thug/ schoolyard bully mentality. Odd since Al is a fucken hack who follows the path of least creative resistance when it comes to making these records.
just remember: 'don’t fuck with buck, cause buck will fuck you up… ’
and the even better follow up: ‘fuck buck though’
