So....if u were in Japan

…and you were in a food court at a shopping mall or something and you saw whale meat being offered as a dish…would you try it? Out of curiosity perhaps?
Or would you not eat it out of principle?

I’m just curious. What does everyone think??

(just thought I’d start a topic that wasn’t bashing the PA or bashing the latest Ministry offering for a change…!!)

In the supermarket situation I would not be offending anyone by not purchasing this product.

I would be very curious of it’s taste as I like meat. However I will not eat an endangered animal or one that has been inhumanely killed,…Stress taints the flavor.

I’d definitely get it to find out what it tastes like.

Good topic!

I wouldn’t eat it out of principle.

Damn those Japanese and their ‘loopholes’.

I would grab a teriyaki bowl and call it a day.

i wouldn’t go out of my way to try it, but if i was out and someone i was with was eating it, i might grab some from their plate just out of curiosity.

so what is the strangest thing (by western standards) that anyones eaten? i’m generally not very adventurous. fried chicken feet were pretty weird. but i’ll stick to red meat.

I’ve tried octopus and squid, if that’s even adventurous. Both were in a paella dish I had at a Spanish restaurant years ago. I just remember both tasting ‘rubbery’, but can’t recall the flavor. I split an order of oysters on the half shell with a friend once - on a dare - and felt like I was on an episode of Fear Factor. They looked and tasted disgusting.

Good topic, that can blows my fucking mind.

I don’t eat mammal meat and only eat seafood once in a great while (when I’m at a restaurant or a friend’s place and that’s the only option) so nope, I’d pass.

Back in more carnivorous days I’ve eaten goat. It was curried and not bad. Definitely eaten plenty of squid, though I don’t really like it my wife loves it so I used to nibble on it a bit.

Interesting responses.

Although I was kinda more interested in your stance from a MORAL point of view.

ie your views on culling whales for food.

I’m a total carnivore. Animals are on this planet so that I can eat them. A meal without something in it that had parents doesn’t qualify as proper food in my mind.

So yeah, I’d eat the whale and ask for seconds

For that matter, I draw the line at dogs and cats, everything else seems acceptable to eat. Just how I was raised (plus I’ve had dogs and cats as pets).

I had a Whaler once at Burger King…does that count?

I dunno, I’m from the southern part of the states, and usually people eat just about everything. Cue token redneck jokes. I grew up eating things like rabbit, venison, similar…my grandfather had dog (and cat) in the Korean War…

I’d have to say I would try it, mostly because I just have no issues with eating meat. I’m pretty loose in that area, morally. I don’t dig the fact that it comes from a can, though. Eugh.

I think it’s a dodgy prospect to eat a whale from an endangered species point of view but I think it’s dodgy to eat most meat. I believe it’s up to each person to make that choice, I’m not one to shove my opinions in people’s face. I tend to think that the issue will resolve itself to a degree. As meat substitutes get better and better (right now the BBQ riblets are better than “real” BBQ pork and the Morningstar Black Bean Burgers are amazing) people will eat meat less and less for health, taste, availibility and morality reasons.

Now dolphin I’d have to draw the line at the whole “it’s your own choice” deal. Eating a lifeform that is proven to be intelligent to that degree - you might as well eat a child.

According to ‘Moby Dick’, which I recently finished, whale is delicious. Even the smell of burning whale oil used in a lamp is supposed to give off a wonderfully delicate odor.

However, those guys were eating fresh. And they were eating Sperm Whale which is endangered.

I guess the reason I wouldn’t eat it out of a can is because, I wouldn’t eat anything out of can and expect it to taste good.

I don’t have any problem with say Minke whale. There’s a lot of different kinds of cetaceans, and only some of them are in danger of becoming extinct.

Well, I live in Scotland now, where they eat deep fried sheep’s guts (haggis) and deep fried congealed blood (black pudding).
A ‘cheeseburger’ over here is a dee fried meat pattie with some cheese as a filling.

I’m not kidding either.

They even deep fry Mars Bars too!!

Oooh! Now there’s a thought!

Curried child. Yum.

i’ve seen the deep fried mars/snickers bars around here at fairs. also deep fried twinkies. I’ve heard there is even some sort of deep fried coke around? that i’d have to try.

i agree with wempathy on the can factor.

morally i guess i don’t really care about what is eaten. i probably wouldn’t eat cat or dog (although i’ve been told it’s pretty good in certain dishes). but i don’t really feel that they are any more special than any other animal people regularly eat (and i do have 3 cats). it’s just a social thing. if i grew up somewhere where it was accepted then i’d be all for it.

I seriously didn’t know that black pudding was congealed blood - ugh!

Have you had haggis? It seems to have a reputation of being disgusting, but I’ve never tried it (don’t know that I want to after seeing it).

Haggis is actually quite nice with swede, new potatoes and carrots…

Saying that, It’s not something I’d have on a weekly basis.
gotta try it though.
