Skinny Puppy - Worlock

For those who haven’t seen it, or wanna take a trip down memory lane.

We’ve come a long way in 25 years after talking about shit like A Serbian Film.

I’ve never liked Skinny Puppy with their “ooooh aren’t we scaaaaaaary!” music…however I was totally gay for Rabies only because I was gay for Al at the time. Worlock is a class act tune nae doot! Omen trumps on that album though.

Skinny Puppy puts out a spooky music vibe to you? Never got that…I mean, their music is certainly atmospheric, but their lyrics were never meant to be intended as simply gothic or whatnot…

Big fan here. Wasn’t into Handover, though, but for different reasons. Their B-sides are even top notch.

Those are actually some of my favorite songs.

Bark
Serpents
The Second Opinion
Cage
Addiction (Second Dose)
Nature’s Revenge (Dub)

Big Puppy fan here. Worlock is one of their best tracks.

I actually have a funny story regarding the video:

Before the days of watching videos on the internet, a friend and I had a bootleg VHS of this video. We got permission to use the VCR in the back of the computer lab at school. There was a tape in it already and we took it out.

It turned out that we unknowingly used the wrong VCR, and that particular VCR was hooked up to the learning disability classroom below. All of the kids saw the video and the teacher marched upstairs. She arrived and said “WHAT IS THIS?! PUT BACK ON POLLY!” and then left. She wasn’t as pissed as I thought she would be after her kids watched this, but it certainly was a top ten “whoooops!” moment for me.

I prefer the Singles Collection version WARLOCKed, it has a meaner beat. And despite coming off a crappy album it’s a signature puppy track.

What is with the Rabies hatred I keep seeing on this board?! Is it the original shitty mastering job? Because it’s been remastered since and it sounds killer.

I love Rabies…always have…

Skinny Puppy purists hate it because of all the Jourgensen/guitar stuff.

I love it, though.

Like SP never had guitars in their songs before that? That’s hella stupid. Not to mention there wasn’t that much guitar on that album after having listened to it recently.

Fascist Jock Itch certainly has a 1989 Ministry vibe. Apart from that, you can hear a little bit of Al’s production here and there, but it’s more of the pre-metal Ministry sound.

I think they were just shooting for a fresh sound and Ogre was already working with Al at that point.

Rabies is a decent album because of the first five tracks. Rodent is a sick opener. Hexonxonx has this odd, almost sunny, bouncy vibe to it (so glad they finally played this live). Dig the effects on Ogre’s vocals and that whispy little synth on Two Time Grime. Fascist Jock Itch brings it more up tempo then it drops back down into ol’ Worlock. The first five flow so well together, they would stand alone nicely as an EP. The rest is alright but arguably some of the weaker Skinny Puppy tracks with the exception of Tin Omen and Rivers.

I think Rabies is my favorite Puppy album outside of a Remission. The LP very is better though because the CD bonus tracks really kill the flow of the album. Spahn dirge is just a shot jam session that would have been a poor b-side but is a terrible album closer, tag that on with subpar amputate and I feel it gives people a poor impression of the album they just heard.

I agree about the bonus tracks. Those were actually B-sides to the Tim Omen single that they just slapped on to the CD release. They did that with a few of their albums.

i dont know, i like rabies. for personal listening, i just shoved “Amputate” between the album’s ‘sides’ - between fascist jock itch and worlock, and it works ok.

to me rabies is like ministry’s psalm69 - most accessible album, or something like that. stuff like vivisectvi is alright and i respect it and stuff, but usually just a bit noisy for me personally to enjoy. and the earlier stuff has maybe 2-3 tracks per album that i really enjoy (assimilate, smothered hope, the choke, etc).

rabies is the one i like and enjoy from start to finish (well, also like doomsday live). can’t really see how jourgensen “damaged” it or how it’s like “oge + al” album, as people like to say about it.

You’re right, Amputate does fit nice between those two tracks.
