I guess. Ogre just seemed like a down to earth kinda guy from what I saw on FIX and what Connelly said about him in his book. I understand him he was probably tired and with CEvin I kinda did interrupt him talking with a friend of his. I ain’t gonna dwell on it. I still had a good time. It doesn’t come close to my meeting with Glen Benton. Now that’s what you call a fucking douche and a half!

What happened with Glen Benton? Pretty much everyone i’ve met, musician-wise, has been pretty nice, or even really friendly.

hate to hear that dude. ohgr has always been extremely nice to me. i’ve never met kevin. i’m sure it was just an off night for him.
That’s odd. Every time I’ve met Ogre he’s been super cool. cEvin, on the other hand, can be pretty awkward.

hahahaha The Benton story. I’m only laughing at how young I was when it happened. It’s actually kinda embarrassing.
For those who don’t know, Glen Benton fronts the death metal band Deicide. His trademark on every Halloween is branding an inverted cross on his forehead, which actually looks more like a birth defect as of 2003. Anyways, the show was at some dive bar in Sacramento. A then unknown Polish band called Behemoth was also on the bill and it was their first US tour. Yes, that Behemoth. They stole the show that night kinda by default since I missed Amon Amarth to go hang out with them after their set. They also had Novy from Vader on bass that tour, who gave me a couple free stickers and a poster, which I’ve unfortunately lost over the years. I didn’t really get to talk to Nergal much, but he was nice. I was mainly talking their rhythm guitarist Havoc, who left the band after the tour. He’s one of the nicer people I’ve met in a band.
Anyways, there ended up being an issue with Deicide and them not getting payed what they asked. I had a little chit-chat with the two guitarists and they seemed cool, despite the mix up. I go to talk to Glen Benton and made the silly mistake of asking him how much money they were getting fucked out of. Looking back this is clearly none of my business, but I was a dumb 16 year old at the time. Benton just totally ignored me and had his manager kick me out. I’ve always thought that was such a rock star/dick head move. Then we’re all outside and I can hear him bitching about me to the members of Behemoth saying things like “leave me and my fucking band the fuck alone.” He may have been doing me a favor by having his manager kick me out instead of ripping my head off himself. But I would expect something like that from Metallica or some mainstream metal band. But Deicide? They’re pretty big for their genre, but far from mainstream in comparison. I at least give Ogre a little respect for saying something, though I don’t think he even looked me in the eye when he said it.
Anyways, Deicide pulled an Axl Rose and went on hella late. Their manager also apologized to me since my dad was working security that night. I decided to be somewhat of a good sport and stay for a few songs. As soon as they finished “Children of the Underworld” I left. The whole experience made me hate almost the entire genre of death metal for awhile. I still don’t like most of it now, but for different reasons. To think that was almost 11 years ago to the day. No, I’m not gonna have similar hatred for SP, but I won’t quite hear their music the same way again and probably won’t see them live next time they come around. I saw them on the Mythmaker tour several years ago, so I’ve at least seen them before hand. I might go to the next show just to sit outside and meet random people again. That was actually quite fun.
What an asshole. He claimed he’d kill himself at 33, obviously he broke that promise. I think bands of Deicide’s level should be appreciative of their fans, they’re not in a position to alienate any of their record-buying public. J Mascis was quite snooty with me once and i kinda ended up hating him for it, i lost interest in Dinosaur Jr pretty fast after that. Thankfully pretty much all the other people that i’ve met, whose bands i follow, have been lovely.

Dude,Mascis has and always will be like that…it’s not that he is snooty,he is just very distant and introverted…his is a flat line personality…it was nothing personal that’s just the way he is…
Eureka-you would actually skip on seeing SP just because they weren’t friendly to you? I find that odd…musicians are just people and they sometimes have bad nights…or maybe they just aren’t personable…it’s not a pre-requisite that they need to please you off stage just because you bought a ticket…you gotta have thicker skin, guys…
Yeah, i did hear that afterwards from someone else, that he’s just very shy. In fairness i did meet him again the next night because i had to get something signed for a friend who couldn’t make the show, and he was slightly more friendly.

Well I didn’t even get into the show, but I see your point. It’s actually more because people were going outside to have a smoke in what’s supposed to be the best SP show in years. Maybe it wasn’t as great as others are making it out to be. That and I’ve seen them. Maybe I’ll go if it’s the farewell tour or something. Or I’ll catch them on the 2nd leg of this tour in the fall. Who knows? I’m just not really in the mood to support them at the moment. But like I said, it doesn’t really take away from the good time I did have. I’m not the 16 year old metalhead whose bitter about getting kicked out of the backstage area at a Deicide concert. If I come off that way at all it’s because there was a time where Ogre was an inspiration on some of my writings, so yeah I’m a little offended. It ain’t the end of the world though. Like you said, he’s a person too.

I’ve have had my expectations lowered after meeting the following musicians-
David Crosby 1991 - Hateful asshole. Gave me an evil look when I approached him after a gig: “Hi David. That was a great show. I was really hoping you’d do one or two Byrds songs just for old time’s sake but it…” then he cut me off by turning away, muttering “motherfucker” under his breath and spitting on the ground.
Pat Smear 1993 - another evil look when I approached him at a Meat Puppets gig. Told me to “go away”.
Blixa Bargeld 1993 - signed my copy of Tabula Rasa then completely ignored my polite attempts at conversation. Just rolled his eyes in a cuntish sort of way.
Bjork 1996 - Met her at Glastonbury festival. Bitch. And really fucking tiny. REALLY tiny.
Ian Brown (Stone Roses) 1996 - paranoid, ego maniac and probably the rudest “celebrity” I have ever met. A long story but let’s just say I walked away without punching his face which believe me was quite the achievement on my behalf. And he stunk of pot.
Peter Buck 1994 - On The Monster tour. And was a Monster asshole when I approached him and asked him to sign my cd. Eventually signed it but acted like I had just asked him for a pint of his blood and a blowjob to boot.
Beck 2001 - Rude. But I was admittedly quite loud and drunk at the time.

Not surprised on most of them, except for Bjork.

Hahaha, amazing, you must be very easygoing and patient. All those people sound like absolute cunts, i’m sure you wish you’d given them a mouthful of abuse for their cheekiness. Pat Smear? He’s lucky anyone’s interested in him, the little cling-on.
I’ve met a lot of “rock stars” in my time, and most have been really cool.
The only two who were dicks to me were:
Phil, the singer from Sacred Reich.
And Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth. Kim was such a cunt, that Thurston Moore (bandmate, and former husband) actually apologized to me.
Not surprised on most of them, except for Bjork.
You’re surprised that Bjork would be a bitch?!?!?
[shocked]
I haven’t had too many rude celebrity encounters except with local Melbourne “celebs” that none of you guys would have heard of.
Gotta say I don’t see why people expect bands to be “on” after they’ve just played a massive gig. It’s an exhausting experience and you put a lot of yourself I to it and for some people it’s not easy to switch gears from “intense” to “schmooze with people I’ve never met before”.
That was the hardest shift for me when I got sober, the after show stuff. When I was loaded it was alright but I was sloppier onstage, once sober quite the reverse.
Strangely enough I’m almost positive that Paul Barker was at the Portland show. When we were filling out for the fire alarm there was a guy that I’m 95% sure was Barker standing around over towards the stage talking to some people. I didn’t bother trying to say hello because I didn’t want to look like a total idiot if it wasn’t him!
Something along the lines of:
“Hi there! I like your music.”
“What music?”
“Oh.”
I met Neubatuen backstage on the Perpetuum Mobile tour and they were all nice, though Blixa was a diva (as he is known to be)… he said hello, shook hands, then left, while the rest of the bad stayed and chatted and hung out. Ash Wednesday (their touring keyboardist) was super cool… we ended up hanging around and talking about synthesizers with him for almost the whole time. And Joachim Arbeit put the dumbass CD we gave him down the front of his pats because it didn’t fit in any of his pockets… which was also very cool.
And just to be clear, if I told the story in person, I probably wouldn’t seem as bitter. I’ve had much worse encounters with people in general, like my story of Glen Benton.
Paul Barker was at the Portland show. cEvin Key posted a pic of him, PB, Eric from 16Volt and the drummer from BAAL on Facebook.
Show was fantastic last night.

Was he the guy with the shaved sides on his head?
