Single vs Album Version

ok, in the most cases ministry singles were released after the album and most of them were in the era of popular 12’’ ones, which (as it was explained here) had extended versions of songs (mainly for djs) and offered some extra fun for the fans.

but in some cases, ministry did the opposite. for example, the redline/whiteline version of jesus built my hot rod was released before the sample-less album one; another example was, say, the fall/reload single - both songs were cut a bit on the album.

why? i mean, i can understand the release of extended version after the “regular” one, but why bother to release shorter and trimmed down ones after the longer ones except the case of radio edits?

i mean, yea, maybe in the end it’s all to the artist’s preference… but maybe someone knows the reason. or it just seems that ministry did both regular and extended mixes at the same time, because dark side of the spoon leaked demo tape had two versions of step, nursing home and bad blood?

Maybe they just thought it helped the album flow better.

hm, what’s this?

The “Extended Dance Mix” on this promo-cd is slightly different and longer than the “Extended Dance Mix” on the more common N.W.O cd-single.

The practice of releasing an extended single version before the shorter album version is out goes back to the days when Ministry was more likely to be played in dance clubs. Basically, the extended singles were released on 12" singles first for DJs to be able to play and hopefully drum up interest in the album when it eventually was released. I remember dancing (slamming, rather) to the extended version of “Burning Inside” before “Mind” came out. I believe it was the same with “Stigmata” coming out on 12" first before LORAH came out, and “Over the Shoulder” as well. Same with NIN’s “Down In It” single, as a matter of fact… I remember that as well long before the album came out.

yes, you’re right about down in it. but stigmata 12" version is not just ‘extended’, it’s a totally different remix. well, it has tons more shit goin’ on  so i think that one was released after lorah.
