Yeah, that’s a bad ass story…he was known for having a penchant for psych/kraut/prog music…a cool eccentric cat with an ecclectic palette…rip Mr.J…

Could never have imagined that Helmsley was such a huge GONG fan.

And I used to listen to a lot of GONG.

I’ve no idea who Gong is, but that story is AWESOME!!!

Gong are an obscure (as compared to Yes or Pink Floyd or ELP) prog rock band. The opposite of what you’d expect Sherman Hemsley to be into based on the types of characters he played.

I think that certain members/past members of Gong are better known than the band is…Steve Hillage and Mike Howlett spring immediately to mind. I’m just amazed that Helmsley knew who they were, back when my friends and I was listening to Gong and probably watching the Jeffersons with the sound off.

HAHA!!! Classic.

I know the name Mike Howlett, though I don’t know why. I’ll google it in a bit. I’ll check out Gong when I get home and have a connection that doesn’t completely suck.

Just listened to Master Builder. I was gonna dismiss it . . . until the saxophone kicked in and I decided that the track was brilliant.

Cool stuff. And I could see where (especially as he himself was on a lot of drugs apparently) Hemsley would get the idea that the musicians were on drugs.

Now . . . who can tell me more about that “Flying Tea Kettle Room”?

Now . . . who can tell me more about that “Flying Tea Kettle Room”?

You see, Zero the Hero and the Pothead Pixies flew around in a teapot and…

HAHAHAHAHA!!!

So Sherman was so into Gong that he themed out one of the rooms with a bunch of Flying Teapots or imagery from the albums, songs and such . . . and then had his guest from Gong stay in that room? I wonder what was going on in homeboy’s head when he got led to that room.

This story is getting better and better and I’m suddenly finding myself a big fan of both Gong and Sherman Hemsley.

There was a time in the 80’s when it seemed you couldn’t find an album not produced by Mike Howlett. OMD, Teardrop Explodes, Gang of Four…stuff like that.

Gong did alot of interesting stuff, while not all of it is great…they have a daunting discography that is vast and prolific…and sometimes confusing given the number of spin-off bands and Gong related projects such as Mothergong,Gongzilla,Gongmaison,NY Gong,Planet Gong etc…

The leader of Gong(Daevid Allen also did some real cool stuff with Soft Machine…

As for Hemsley, the cat was a hip hip dude…

IIRC…The original lineup of Soft Machine was Mike Ratledge, Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayres and Daevid Allen. Hard to top that.

Didn’t you used to babysit him?

Today’s gayness is yesteryears blackness and bigotry I guess.

I’ve said this for years now.

Welcome back to the board, hope you post regularly again. All the cool people like you, you should stay.

Sherman Hemsley of the “Jeffersons” died of lung cancer. Did he have yellow teeth and smoke. Did he hang out with Al and Angie.
