I’ll just never really get the attraction of the “electronic” genre to begin with, though, so I’m probably not the most objective on the topic.
re: their “samples” - initially they would lift whole passages or select chunks of original compositions and build their own music over them, or not at all, and consider it theirs. unfortunately, while a lot of the stuff they ripped was not copywritten, it was only in the public domain to not sell or alter the name of.
they did both.
when called out on it, they would usually just call their track “track title (crystal castles vs. ____)” the underlined being the artist they lifted. a dick move but, at least they are paying their influences now.
as for the new album, it still sucks, call it whatever but the production is shit, the singing is not interesting and the music sounds like warmed over b-sides from the last record. they need to hang it up.

Well they do have a Lo-fi type of sound, if that’s what you mean by the production being shit. Loved their first two albums though.
No no. It has nothing to do with lo-fi anything. It sounds like someone with a broken mixing board with sticky faders, unable to push up or down in succession.
Example: half of the last record is mixed in this manner. You can notice which tracks I’m referring to when you hear this. They moved on in the wrong way.
As a fan of Crystal Castles I can say that the new album ‘III’ definitely doesn’t live up to their last album ‘II’. I haven’t heard the first album yet so I can’t compare to that.
I agree it is mostly like lame b-sides from the superior ‘II’ album and doesn’t show much growth at all…
I’ve heard they are basically touring non-stop and pretty partied out. Also it doesn’t sound like Ethan Kahn is really improving on or evolving his production style, which makes sense if he’s constantly on tour I suppose…
It’s funny this band is like God to some people I know (specifically in Brooklyn)…
