Seen any good movies lately?

[reply]Cool, going to catch ‘Watchmen’ later today. Is it nearly 3 hours long or something? Also I’ve heard a sequel is unlikely because of what happens in the film, this should be a bonus.

It’s 2 hours, 40 minutes… long but engaging… my bladder was bothering me way before my attention span did. The Watchmen film is an adaptation of a comic series that ran for 12 issues and is collected in a trade paperback graphic novel of the same name. The source material has a definitive beginning and end, so hopefully no one would blaspheme the original material to the point of making a sequel… seems illogically impossible.

But hey, Mick, if you haven’t read the comic I strongly recommend you read it before seeing the movie, it stands on it’s own so brilliantly it would be a shame to miss. At least check it out after the movie if you enjoy the picture.[/reply]

Sounds good, will do.

Yes I highly recommend the Watchmen, as a comic book dork who picked it up as it came out in the '80s this to me is the single greatest work put out in that medium. Even though Alan Moore’s name is nowhere to be seen in the movie, the dialogue is pretty much straight out of the comic. Some of the perfomances are a little on the flat side at times, but Rorschach may be one of the best portrayals of a comic character ever put on screen. The one big change works all right without destroying the overall intent of the source material. Its a bit long, but short of having made it a 12 episode HBO miniseries, this is the only way to pack so much background story into it.

Saw ‘Watchmen’ last night. Am not familiar with the comic so my frame of reference is within the film alone.

I am neither pleased nor displeased with it but I might be closer to the latter. The best element by far was Rorshach, he was a cool motherfucker. The film is best when he was on the screen, esp. when he’s in prison (“I’m not in here with you, you’re in here with me”… that is one bad ass line) But the other characters were… well… boring. I thought they could have made it a lot more sexy and the fight scenes a little more gripping. Some music choices were good, namely ‘Unforgettable’ at the start, but that scene would have been more effective if the Comedian’s demise was more intense, less choreographed so to speak. I liked the alternative VJ day infamous celebratory kiss.

Anyway there were some nice touches but overall I think it was not very impressive, would I right in thinking it’s more effective as a comic book? The theatre audience I was a part of last night were none too happy. Some quotes: “For fuck’s sake!”, “What the fuck!?”, “This is shite!” …

and the best one of all: “I should have stayed home and watched porn”.

At the end someone at the back, rather obnoxiously, shouts “Thank fuck it’s over!” and a lot of people laughed presumably in solidarity with this guy.

Another good line from the movie is at the end when Daniel comes into the room: “Hello Ms. Jupiter”

At the end someone at the back, rather obnoxiously, shouts “Thank fuck it’s over!” and a lot of people laughed presumably in solidarity with this guy.

Someone yelled exactly the same thing when I went and saw A.I many years ago. The entire (packed) theatre roared with laughter and applauded the guy.

I guess we all needed a little light relief after having $17 and two and a half hours of our lives stolen from us.

lol dude Jeepers Creepers is the worst movie ever created by man and they made two of them.

If you think Jeepers Creepers is the worst film ever made then you obviously haven’t seen ‘fear dot com’.

I’m surprised the cinema going public haven’t taken out a class action against the makers of that film.

If you think Jeepers Creepers is the worst film ever made then you haven’t seen Nic Cage’s ‘The Wicker Man’. That film was frightening for all the wrong reasons.

Agreed. It had nothing on the original.

worst film ever would hands down be the “opposite of sex”.
doesn’t even fall into the so bad it’s kinda funny and/or good catagory…

Obviously none of you have seen “Mac and Me”, “Garbage Pail Kids the Movie” or “Nukie”. Because those are obviously some of the worst movies ever made. Though that Wicker Man remake was a total abomination.

I will never forgive you for “Mac and Me”.

The worst movie I’ve actually paid to go and see was ‘Eragon’. Can’t even explain why I went and saw it in the first place - I wasn’t even stoned. Or babysitting. Rules Of Attraction was god awful too…but at least that had pussy.

Eragon was just…words fail me.

Unfortunately I’ve seen both of those, but not ‘Nukie’ do I even want to know??

Pretty much you can pick any movie out there, and there is someone in the world who thinks its the worst movie ever made. Spend some time looking at one star reviews on amazon for the films you like and you will see what I mean. I can forgive a lot in movies sometimes if they are at least trying, but god damn I saw 88 Minutes or whatever it was called awhile back and that movie was laughable. It consisted of Al Pacino spending the entire film talking on cell phones, or ordering faxes to be sent. Wretched.

Its about time that people start to re evaluate the career of Al Pacino.

Dont get me wrong I think he’s a good actor with some great movies to his name (Godfather I + II, ‘Heat’). But he is not the legend that many (including me) have made him out to be. His range is not that wide and he regurgitates many of his performances. ‘Scent of a Woman’ is a big load of nothing, and that was his oscar winner. But the oscars do have a tendency to reward people for their work at the wrong time eg. Scorcese winning for ‘The Departed’.

De Niro was admonished in recent years for doing stuff like ‘Meet the Parents’, where was all the criticism for Al Pacino for his recent turkeys, namely ‘Righteous Kill’ & ‘88 Minutes’? The difference between the two guys is not just that De Niro can still pull out a good performance (‘What Just Happened?’) while Pacino hasn’t done anything good since ‘The Insider’ or ‘Any Given Sunday’ but also that De Niro is simply a more powerful actor. He doesn’t rely on the wide eyed stare and the long shout.

Still, I’d like to see Pacino make a good film again but its time to rethink his “greatness”

I wouldn’t mind seeing Morgan Freeman playing some bad guys for a change. He’s always too nice and too non-black. I’d like to see him play a pimp that beats his bitches.

The best part of the otherwise mediocre action film ‘Wanted’ was when Morgan Freeman said ’ Shoot this Motherfucker!!’ [:)]

There’s only two movies I can recall him being a bad guy in. One, being Hunted, and the other being Lucky Number Slevin (awesome fucking movie, btw).

Just picked up Religulous by Bill Mahr, but have yet to watch it. And i’ve been starting to get a little curious about The Watchmen. Said i’d check that out two nights ago, and i’m saying it again…unlikely since i’m hooked on GTAIV at the moment (NERD!), but maybe…just maybe!

Awesome!!

I hate Al Pacino movies with a passion.

I think the only thing I’ve really like Pacino in was Devil’s advocate. I think scarface is stupid, I always have, and i hate that that stupid line about his little friend is repeated by everyone ad nauseum. Keeanu reeves pisses me off as an actor too. Bill and Ted end his list of great movies cause really pacino carried reeves all the way through advocate

The planets must have aligned again because by some weird cosmological fluke I actually agree 100% with you. I hate Keanu Reeves - loathe the guy. Couldn’t act his way through a Sesame Street sketch (they don’t call him ‘The Plank’ for nothing y’know). I thought The Matrix was the biggest donkey of a film with a budget over 200 squillion that I have ever seen. But he’s going to continue to get those parts because many women won’t go and see a film if they don’t think the leading man is ‘hot’. And girls think Keanu is ‘hot’.

I actually had a young girl (well…she was 25, which is young-ish) say to me: Why would anyone want to go and see a film with ugly people in it?

Hmmmm…why indeed.

(slaps forehead)

That pretty much sums up the mainstream movie goers attitude if you ask me. The girls like pretty boys and icky gooey romance and the boys like whizz bang special effects and films involving some musclebound squish head saving the world.

Morgan freeman doesn’t act. Well, rarely he acts. He goes in front of a camera for a living a just is morgan freeman… and he gets paid for it. no acting, unless acting consists of acting like morgan freeman. same role every movie

would morgan freeman have to get some hair and sport some Jheri curl?
