Scored at Amoeba today!

I went to Amoeba back in 2003, with my then girlfriend, and the staff there were quite rude.

Aquarius Records in San Francisco were way cooler.

And better stuff too.

Was that San Francisco amoeba or Hollywood?
I would say they’re not really “warm” people but ive never had a problem with them being rude. Actually had the cashier start a conversation with me that lasted 7-8 minutes at the register about misfits and being completionists but that certainly isn’t the norm. I think what Gunnar said was pretty accurate in that that record store is their whole social life… Which probably isn’t a bad thing since many of them carry around rain man like music knowledge and are probably borderline aspergers/autistic and cant banter well anyway.

[reply]I want to move out to cali

Wish I could move back… Maybe one of these days I’ll try and visit relatives some of my relatives in SF. I wasn’t old enough to enjoy the sunset strip when I lived there, so that’s certainly on my list of things to do in life.[/reply]
We’d love to have both of you.

That happens from time to time (usually more like 30 second to 1 minute conversations, but still). The clerks will occasionally share an affinity for something I bought and that gives a point of discussion. “This is a really good album. If you don’t have it already, you should also get ----- .”. Even this interaction is kind of rare in my case, though since my purchases are so random.

Yeah I don’t think I’ve ever had any of those conversations gotten a quizzical look from a clerk when I bought Salo on blu ray but that’s pretty much it.

conversation usually goes “credit debit or cash?”
“Debit”
“ok, I’ll meet you at the end of counter.”

thought fer sure I’d get some conversation based on some of the mixtures 've bought… godflesh, paula abdul, dead kennedys in the same purchase. nary a word

For some reason I didn’t realize you would be a fan of Salo

For some reason I didn’t realize you would be a fan of Salo

Smurf just likes to watch something while listening to the new Voidhead tracks.

For some reason I didn’t realize you would be a fan of Salo

It’s the first movie I ever saw that haunted me for days after I had watched it. Salo is a genius socio/metaphorical commentary on the slavery of freedom.

And what Gunnar said too.

The same thing happened to me.

I love that movie.

I have fed all of the information garnered from the last three months of grmpysmrf posts into a super computer in order to find out his top 20 favorite ever purchases from Amoeba Records.

Sisters Of Mercy - Floodland
PJ Harvey - Rid Of Me
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
The Gang Of Four - entertainment!
Ween - The Pod

Yeah but…what about Paul Abdul

You need to post more Peligro. I… I… mi… I… mi… I… miss you. there you went and made me say it. What are you doing with your time these days, dude? I mean aside from building super computers?

  1. Megadeth - Youthanasia

Don’t own this album, I think the only megadeth I’ve bought from Amoeba is the rust in peace rerecord I know it’s supposed to be remaster but it was a straight rerecord

  1. Judas Priest - Unleashed In The East

I own NO preist records, not really a fan of preist. Although, I salute Halford for being openly gay and still successful in a hyper hetrosexual scene. good for him.

  1. The Cult - Electric

The only Cult I own is Sonic Temple which was given to me by a friend

  1. Dead Kennedys - Plastic Surgery Disasters

I bought this from a local record store about 20 years ago. had to special order it.

  1. The Replacements - Tim

Who?

  1. Queensryche - Empire

Oh man, Empire is Queensryche’s crowning achievement. It’s all down hill from that album. I first bought this on tape at the end of my freshman year in '91. I think I got the CD from the 12 CDs for a penny, columbiahouse scam.

  1. Ennio Morricone - Once Upon A Time In The West O.S.T

Never even heard of this.

  1. Circle Jerks - Golden Shower Of Hits

This is another cd I’ve owned for 20+ years. One of their stronger releases. VI being the pinnacle of their catalogue with group sex coming in a solid 2nd.

  1. Marilyn Manson - Smells Like Children

refused to by this because of all of the joke tracks on it. I think this one was given to me to but I’ve had it for a good 15 years

  1. Motorhead - Rock’n’Roll

I own no Motorhead albums my first intro to Lemmy was Ace of Spades and then Dr. Alibi on Slash’s record. But I dig those 2 songs so it’s a good bet that I would pick up some Motorhead during some future Amoeba trip

  1. Danzig - 4

bought this on its release day from the Wherehouse in '95

  1. MC5 - Kick Out The Jams

I absolutely Detest that kick out the jams song. I hate when RATM does it I hate it when Bad Brains covers it I just fucking hate this song so I’ve never been compelled to listen to any other MC5 songs

  1. Public Image Ltd - Metal Box

I own “That What Is Not” but it was given to me by a friend and “Greatest Hits So Far” which I bought at the swap meet along with “Tears For Fears Hurting” for a combined total of 4 bucks.

  1. Bad Brains - Bad Brains

I do not own any Bad brains records

  1. Neurosis - A Sun That Never Sets

Oh, so close. I bought Souls At Zero at Amoeba

  1. Husker Du - Zen Arcade

I do not own a Husker record and I gotta say I don’t think I’ve even ever heard a Husker song

  1. Misfits - Legacy Of Brutality

Another album I’ve owned for 20+ years bought it in Bakersfield at a little indie store called Andy Noise. Picked up Samhain november… there too. Didn’t even know Danzig had That project

  1. Fugazi - Repeater

1/2 right. My wife is a fan of Ian McKaye and she bought repeater at Amoeba.

  1. Slayer - Decade Of Aggression

I own no Slayer albums. not really my thang.

  1. Jello Biafra & DOA - Last scream Of The Missing Neighbours

I’ve owned this album for 20 years now. the best collab between Jello and anyone.

Not bad work there grmpy (assuming the software program I meticulously put together is correct). Keep up the good work. Also, these are some albums I believe would suit you.

Ween - The Pod

Bought this at Amoeba a few trips back… not really a fan of it. “The Oneness” is by far the best Ween album

Yeah but…what about Paul Abdul

It was the “Forever Your Girl” album and it was 2 bucks and my “Spellbound” Album was lonely so I adopted it’s older ugly sister.
