Scarecrow Sample

Michael was sacked…interesting as he was an important person connected with Al…What happened?

You’ll get a laugh out of this… my understanding is that he was fired for having a substance abuse problem. Oh the irony runs thick.

Mind you that was probably just an excuse. People would fall in and out of and back in favor with Al, and if he decided he disliked someone that particular day, he would contrive all kinds of reasons to ostracize that person. And as you know, “Psalm” was a long and difficult record to make. When the process grew tedious or deadlines were missed, Al wouldn’t hesitate to pass the buck.

Oh. Ha Ha, ok. I thought they would be labeled better. but it appears they are labeled for whoever was using them… Have you gone through them all? Sorry if I’m bugging with these questions I can stop…

I figured that.

Yeah… they’re labeled that way because the Akai samplers in use at that time had a 10- or 12-character limit, I think, and the sounds were transferred from those via Sound Designer and later Sound Tools (which eventually became Pro Tools).

I’ve heard a lot of them, yeah, but by no means all. I’ll be searching our libraries for something totally unrelated, and suddenly a sample will pop up and I just burst out laughing. “Oh, THAT.” Like military guys grunting or something ridiculous.

The fact is we rarely use them in anything current. For one, we just don’t produce much industrial… and even when we do, I think it is lame to use “the secret sauce” even though it is sitting there on the shelf. (There is one notable exception to this.) Also sampling movie dialog is, like, so 1993. Not just because it is a cliche now, but because copyright and sampling law became much stricter during the intervening years. A producer couldn’t get away with that shit in 2020… or they would be clearing everything with a lawyer and paying tens of thousands of dollars in licensing. Think of late 1980s Public Enemy and Beastie Boys, for example. You literally cannot make those records now given how many uncleared samples there are! It would be akin to hearing a Led Zeppelin record after the guitar has been outlawed.

Of course. I have nothing to hide and nothing bad to say about anyone. More importantly, I’m a fan as much as everyone else here. I’ve been lucky to build friendships and working relationships with more than a few people who were there to see the sausage being made, so to speak.

Always happy to look into something or answer questions assuming I have an answer.

Let me guess, Howie Beno?

The one and only. Lovely and talented beyond words.

After Ministry, he and Critter produced a number of records together. Skatenigs, Skrew, Monster Voodoo Machine, etc.

All good btw.

Random detail: Howie is seen on the far right playing the “keys” in the “Jesus Built My Hotrod” video.

I really like his remix of Craziaskowboi. It sounds like an outtake from Psalm.

Movie is worth watching. And so is the Nightbreed Archive (comic book). Its based on Clive Barkers script. Alot of stuff not used in the movie. And follows after the film. Includes Hellraiser vs Nightbreed…
