Sax in music

I’m curious how many of you are fans of some good quality sax in music, or do you want to stab someone in the face when you hear it?

My childhood WAS the 1980s, and a majority of the decade featured pop music that had a decent amount of horns or sax in it. I always thought the sax solos and lead lines were really a huge part of the ‘80s sound’. I think it was Gerry Rafferty’s “Baker Street” from 1978 that hooked me on sax in pop/rock music. Here are some of my favorite sax-filled songs. What are some of yours…and is this the gayest thread ever on Prongs?

Glenn Frey - You Belong To The City
Quarterflash - Harden My Heart, Take Me To Heart
Tears For Fears - Memories Fade, The Working Hour
Frozen Ghost - Should I See
Phil Collins - One More Night
Rolling Stones - Waiting On A Friend
Men At Work - Overkill, Who Can It Be Now
Ministry - Say You’re Sorry, Cannibal Song
Romeo Void - pretty much their whole catalogue
Psychedelic Furs - Shock
David Bowie - Blue Jean, ton of Bowie, actually
OMD - So In Love
Christopher Cross - Arthur’s Theme (oh yeah!)
INXS - Original Sin
English Beat - Mirror In The Bathroom
Madness - One Step Beyond
…anything Clarence Clemons played for Bruce

shit, there’s a lot more coming to mind, probably forgetting some obvioius ones, too.

Sax Man from The Lost Boys!

“I Still Believe, parp parp paaaaaaaaaaarp!!”

In general I detest the saxophone and find it pompous, annoying and vulgar. That being said . . . . this is AWESOME!!!

Furthermore . . . when I was in 5th or 6th grade my buddies decided we’d do some Duran Duran songs for the talent show (translation: lipsync and pretend we were playing the various instruments). I wasn’t king of my elementary school posse, though. In fact, I was probably the one wishing I was as “cool” as the others. Long story short, I didn’t get first shake at billing . . . . . so, our fruity New-Ro Duran Duran groupie buddy was Simon LeBon. Some other guys were Roger, Andy, and John Taylor and another dude was Nick Rhodes.

So all the regular parts were taken . . . but, we were doing “Rio” so there was a sax solo in the song. So I got to be the sax player for our performance (at least I wasn’t “lighting and effects” like my buddy Pablo – I can expand more on that job later, haha).

So while most of the song is really about Simon or maybe the guitarist, I got my spotlight moment when the solo came. And you can bet your sweet ass I poured my heart and soul into that fake sax solo like it was the most important concert I’d ever play (maybe it was).

Sax usually sucks, in my opinion.

But I have heard it employed in pleasant ways occasionally.

Generally speaking, when I think of the saxophone I think of everything “musical” that I hate and everyone that I want to punch.

I almost got thrown out of a Dee Snider concert before it even started because I started screaming at the roadies when they brought some saxophones on stage. The ladies next to me were amused by my vehemence and also helped me in my crusade to keep the concert sax-free.

The only thing gayer than a saxophone is a saxophone that looks like a fruity ass clarinet or shitty trumpet.

Exhibit A:

If my child ever brought such an abomination home I would beat the crap out of him with it and then take it to the Pawn Shop to trade for Lawn Darts.

Sax Man from The Lost Boys!

Came here to say this, damn that whole soundtrack is killer!

1002, those are all great examples.

I would add Pink Floyd’s Dogs of War and Ministry’s The Game is Over.

David Bowie all the way.

I love that Fear song. About a dozen years ago, I interviewed Brad Bancroft, who played “Brad” in Bachelor Party (“Pain is such a rush”), and he said he and Hanks would mosh to this song off set, which inspired some of the “dancing” in the movie.

…and thanks for reminding me of Rio! Duran Duran did have a good sax player on board for a couple of their early albums.

Wasn’t Mars Williams - the guy that played sax for Ministry in '83 and '89, also the sax player for Psychedelic Furs? Guess I could Google that myself.

Whoever played the sax in Debbie Gibson’s song “foolish beat”

Wait, wait dude…you interviewed ‘Brad’ from Bachelor Party??? May I ask why? I love that fucking movie…

Alan Parsons & Floyd use Sax…

“Midnight City” by M83 has an '80s style sax break, and it’s pretty sweet.

Yeah, I’m such a nerd for that movie, that I once created a movie website back in 2004 (celebrating 20 years), and I went on a mission to contact and interview people involved in making Bachelor Party. The site is gone (was an old Yahoo Sitebuilder site), but I have the HTML files saved, and all of the website content. Sometimes I debate re-launching the site, but the movie is now 32 years old. Interview-wise, I managed to reach the following people:

Bob Israel (producer) - interview, he and his brother, Neal, were involved in a lot of '80s comedies, including the Police Academy series, and the shitty-but-watchable Moving Violations

Brad Bancroft (Brad) - interview, we have kept in touch over the years, he’s the coolest guy. He sent me an autographed third draft of the script (which contains deleted scenes and characters), and some press photos.

Barry Diamond (Rudy) - interview, met him at a comedy club in Scottsdale in 2005

Garry Grossman (Gary) - made contact, but he was too busy to interview at the time

Miriam Cutler (piano player, Angel and the Reruns, the all-girl party band) - she sent me a cassette demo of “Nature Took Over”, a song from the movie that didn’t make the soundtrack

Hillary Carlip (singer, Angel and the Reruns) - just a couple of email exchanges

I reached out to Tawny Kitaen, but she was busy making tabloid news for her drug problems, and beating her MLB boyfriend with a shoe while he was driving, so that wasn’t going to happen! Attempts to reach Michael Dudikoff, Adrian Zmed, Robert Prescott, and Tom Hanks were pretty much fruitless, but I wasn’t counting on any contact with them. Wendie Jo Sperber was battling breast cancer (died in 2005).

James Ryan - director of Bachelor Party 2: The Last Temptation (2008). He was more than happy to do an interview for me, but then I watched that abomination (a non-related sequel), and never contacted him. I didn’t want to ask him anything about that mess of a movie.

This is probably boring the other Prongers, but if you want to talk some more about the flick or get hooked up with rare soundtrack songs (I even have the movie score isolated as its own soundtrack), or read the interviews, feel free to PM me!

Hell no! It’s the best thing in ages. Your dedication to that movie is friggin’ AWESOME and I think you’re a true American Hero! It’s been ages since I’d seen it but definitely need to give it a re-spin now. My only random trivial chime-in on it would be that I was always amused that Oingo Boingo was credited on the film with their original lengthy moniker . . . “The Mystic Knights Of The Oingo Boingo”.

Anyway, keep up the good work, Sir.
You are awaited in Valhalla!

Fairly certain I have Adrian Zmed’s contact info. I worked on a thing with him a few years back.
