Same Old Madness 12"

Does anyone know any more info about this? This might be old news, but this is the first I’ve heard about it.

I know the songs, but I’m curious to what Revenge/Effigy may have sounded like pre-WS. Maybe more like the live versions?

Are there cover art proofs or anything?

never asked for nothing was played live and its been bootlegged in a decent quality (forgot the name of 1982 boot); revenge/effigy i think were not really that much different - despite al’s usual “label made me do it” diatribes, the demos that appeared here couple years ago proved kind of otherwise.

as for same old madness, as you know, few years ago a member from this very board (i thik it was SKot) finally unearthed a good quality vhs tape of it and digitized it, now it’s all over youtube.

it’s also funny how 1981 first ministry release has “live” bass on cold life (and i’m falling i guess as well), but the band switched to using synth bass for those songs, and some others too, i think until 1983.

and i’m still waiting for good quality rip of that 1983 pro-shot live show to appear…

Found this on a text doc that bisquitodoom hooked me up with a few years ago:

01 Same Old Madness
02 Revenge
03 Effigy

Taken from an unreleased EP to be released in mid-82. 1 was never released. 2 and 3 are the versions from With Sympathy. The versions on the 12" would probably have been different. This EP was also to have the track Never Asked For Nothing, but no studio version of this song has surfaced.

I do have a good mp3 of Same Old Madness, if anyone’s interested. The live version of Revenge is awesome, but there is also the demo which is closer to the WS version. So I’m just curious to what this 12" version may have been like. The 82 live version of Effigy is extremely close to the WS version, a little less polished though.

Most of the info I have comes from this interview: http://www.prongs.org/minfiles/mags/melody_maker/melody-maker-july-10-1982.jpg

As far as I know, it never got pressed, but it’s entirely possible, especially since a video was shot. I haven’t seen it, but a press release from Wax Trax surfaced mentioning it as an upcoming release, but I think that’s the only info on it.

I don’t recall “Never Asked for Nothing” ever being recorded in a studio for release. I’ve heard a couple of live versions of it…but nothing that sounded finished or polished so I assume that it never received the kind of treatment that taking it to a studio would render. It probably never got played more than 8 or 10 times I’d guess.

It’s possible that there might have been a plan to release this group of songs on a WT EP to coincide with the WT funded video to Same Old Madness but it never came to fruition, for whatever reason.

The same interview also mentions that the UK version would include “Julie Burchill” but, of course…there was never even a hint of a song by that name. It was pure fiction said as a joke for the benefit of the interview only.

Thanks for the info Wemp!

What’s interesting is the interview says the Vince and Ian produced the tracks. Is it possible that the cuts for Revenge and Effigy are the same as the WS cuts?

It’s possible that the foundations are the same and that those tracks were started in Chicago at CRC with Iain Burgess behind the desk. I do remember rerecording some of John Davis’ parts in Boston during the WS sessions, hence, some of the songs on WS I know were begun in Chicago. WFL I’m almost certain was partially tracked in Chicago and then finished in Boston.

My guess is, we started working on them in Chicago under the assumption that they would be on WT. Then the Arista deal came along and Al assumed we’d (he’d) just start from scratch and give WT one last EP of material…but instead used those tracks as starter material for WS. WaxTrax then received a settlement and the rest is history.

That’s how I vaguely remember it.

Off topic, but Wemp… What’s the synth in your avatar?
