Salo And other Disturbing flicks

Since you have taken the meanest person in the world title at the moment I wonder what you think of the movie “Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma.” by Pasolini
you are obviously the stand out here who has an extremely warped sense of humor/view of things. So I wonder what a mind like yours thinks of when watching this flick. have you seen it? What is your take is on it? Obviuosly, you are into ugliness by your question with the connelly book “What’s the worst thing chris says” Well if you like violent ugliness towards others you will adore this flick. If you haven’t seen it try to find it because I REALLY want to know what someone who presents themselves. in the manner that you do. thinks of this… Please submit a movie review
Thanks

but what specifically did you think of SALO? there was no clear protagonist and only hate and and despair from either side of the characters… That’s all you got? “Pasolini is ok”
I saw this film several years ago with random watches again here and there and aside from absolute corruption I can’t seem to find a theme within the movie or character motivations. For example why did the piano player jump out the window at the end…I just thought with the way you see and think about things maybe you would have synopsis… or something you find redeeming about this movie, other than intro to snuff film101

I own this film. It’s fantastic!

Pure mindless obscenity.
Not that I’m really into that sort of thing, I normally scoff at “done for shock value” kind of stuff. But Salo is just fucking crazy, as opposed to trying to be crazy, I can’t help but think it’s a great film.

It’s like a feature length demented Benny Hill show…

I own it too. But WHAT makes it fantastic? IS my question. You can’t take either side because normally one would not be so cruel, so they wouldn’t identify with the 4 capturers (Libertines) and one also doesn’t see themselves as so weak that they would identify with the captured (Even though I think that is what pasolini was saying with his film “you’re all captured and you don’t even know it”) but many things don’t make sense within the film…I.E. why did the piano player jump out the window?

Everybody else in the movie has a roll and I think is pretty understandable. the lady that gets the kids ready for their tortures is playing the roll of a news caster the way she says all of those horrible things with a straight face. the way a news anchor would “42 dead and maimed and now this imprtant message from our friends at Listerine”

The way the Libertines make everyone (including themselves) dine on feces is a complete statement of fast food within our culture and so on and so forth…
Just wondering what a sadist in training or complete sadist would think of the movie. Hence, I ask Jizzwad although I don’t know if he’s really a sadist in real life or just on the internet but either way I thought he would have some interesting muses on the film.

…But WHAT makes it fantastic? …
it is a great take on fascism. it is a movie that hurts and it is disgusting just as much as its subject matter. well done pasolini.

The best thing about Pasolini is that coil’s masterpiece “ostia” was about him.

“The Gospel According To St. Matthew” was also a good movie. Odd to think the same guy directed Salo.

Haven’t seen Salo, heard it’s pretty messed up, somethinh about cutting women so they defecate out somewhere they shouldn’t be.

I stopped watching movies like that after seeing cannibal holocaust. I’ll stick to cheesy fake horror movies thank you! I know it will be fake, I dunno I think too much about things now, I’d be up for days feeling bad for the characters if I watched Salo.

I don’t think that happened BUT they do force a girl to eat feces off of the floor

I’ve never seen cannibal halocaust…I heard it was cheezy fake though. The only thing really horrible was the when they slaughter a sea turtle which wa actual footage but it was apparently what that tribe does anyway because they use every part of the turtle…I may net flix it. Besides C.H. can’t be too bad cause you can get it through NetFlix Salo has been banned WORLDWIDE! you can’t get it on net flix the only copy I was able to find was British Film Institute copy that needs a region 2 player to play it (Saved it as an ISO on my comp then burned it as a region free DVD)

Good man You definately want to skip Salo then. To say it’s disturbing would be a supreme UNDERSTATEMENT i’d describe it as haunting. It will stay with you for days. You would definately feel bad for the characters. Although what is really weird is you start to see many of the scenes/scenarios in your daily life. Minus the S&M but like I wrote earlier newscasters will remind you of the old lady(Whore) that prepares these kids for they are about to endure. It is seriosly a movie that is twisted in the fact that it’s one big metaphor for todays rotted society… I’d definately say it’s extremely NIHILISTIC and I don’t think society is that bad YET. However, You could make the argument that cociety is headed that way QUICKLY

I’ve refused to watch salo, S.L.U.G’s tried to persuade me, but no…not my cuppa tea

Is Salo really banned in the US? I know it’s not in print but wasn’t there a Criterion release of it a few years back? I know I’ve seen that floating around a few video stores.

A friend of mine screened a print of Cannibal Holocaust at his school once and the film came with barf bags. Never watched the movie though because I’m just not up for the sea turtle bit.

I would steal the criterion release from Video stores. and I generally make it a rule not to be a thief. The criterion release is in limited Numbers as Criterion got MUCH flack for adding it to their catalogue. Also, Shortly after they put it on DVD it became banned in the US AGAIN, (it was only unbanned from roughly '93 to about '97 or '98) The Criterion Collection version regularly sells for multiple hundreds of dollars on the net. I bought mine several years ago from an independent music store called Amoeba in Hollywood. Because it was a BFI foriegn Film it was about 25 bucks. About 6 months ago that copy went out of print (or became banned again in Britain bfi=british film institute) So that version shot up at the same Store to $80. Anyway I would love to see the features contained within the Criterion collection. If you have the means to copy a DVD and would be willing to do that I would throw a few bucks your way if you wouldn’t mind mailing it to me. Your whim.

KEZ: even if your not easily disturbed This movie will stick with you for a few days so best to stay a way.
I bought a behind the scenes of SALo VHS on the net a few years back but it was labeled as ALL IN ITALIAN but I haven’t watched it yet. Supposedly shows the actors in various states of their torture laughing and joking with the director and such.

I haven’t watched eraserheaad yet. I’ve never heard anything good about it I.E. every review I’ve read says it’s sooooo disturbing. With every other “Shock” type film there has been battles “most shocking movie ever” then somebody comes along and posts “Are you High that was so fake …” So I’ll check those out. But Eraserhead has always been, “That Movie is MESSED UP” with no counter point. I’ve even read some user wrote “Don’t watch this movie if your even remotely depressed It’ll make you want to kill yourself”
So, I’m a bit leary to watch it. I don’t want to be haunted.
As Far as Lynch goes I agree with hit or miss. I own and adore Blue Velvet (Hopper Absolutely makes that Film BULLSHIT!!! PABST BLUE RIBBON!) and I can’t stand Lost Highway! There’s 2 hours of my life I can’t get back. But I also own the Short films of David Lynch and only about have of those are Decent.

What you said about Eraserhead “It’s a political type of imagery where you have images that represent something else”
That’s completely how I see SALO which Is why I thought maybe you had some thoughts on any of the scenes you know synopsis type stuff.

I found Eraserhead to be absolutely hilarious, with all the visual metaphors and everything that is actually kinda charming rather than disturbing. Elephant Man was far more deppresive than Eraserhead as well.

The biggest problem with Eraserhead as far as the ordinary viewing public is concerned is that its clearly an attempt at auteur cinema and is therefore made for film school snobs (like myself), directors and other academically minded people. I’m guessing that this is why so many people dont like it. The same is true for Godard films for example. Academics etc. are rolling on the floor in laughter due to some framing or pan that he did while a regular person expecting to see a linear narrative, transparent editing and rhythm based on satisfying amusement has no idea whats going on.

I may have to get out more, but Eraserhead is the most bizarre film I’ve ever seen. I do want to see it again, because it’s so weird. I guess that means I like it. I like most of Lynch’s films. Love the soundtrack for Lost Highway.

Has anyone here ever seen “Freaks” from 1932? I’ve only seen a couple of short clips, but it looks fascinating, considering the ‘freaks’ are real. I’ve thought about renting it, just to feed my curiosity.

As for imagery not much …I tend to agree with some of what was said above. I don’t personally connect the film to my own behavior if that’s what yr shooting for here.

Not connecting to your own behavior but behaviors of others and situations we all live in.

For example. The old whore comes off like a newscaster.
I know already said.

The corpraphagia obviosly a slam at fast food, Because if you’ll remember certain people were only allowed to go at certain times and certain ways. Some girls weren’t allowed to releive themselves until after 48 hours or something. Others were given food to give them Diarehea. What’s the Differece? IT’s all ShT. You can easily point to McDonalds and Burger King It’s all ShT (to follow the metaphor) it has no nutritional value and yet people “Prefer” certain fast food chains over others? why? It’s just a “Burger”

NEXT MY FAVORITE SCENE and the one that EASILY stands out to me as what it means is part of the the feces on the floor scene because the girl they are making eat it is crying her eyes out saying please don’t make me eat that please. and what does the rest of the group do? they glare at her for rocking the boat. THe one that knows better is always hated by society. The smart person is punished by the group. that happens all the time.

THe Marriage Ceremony Where the Libertines perform the Wedding and then Not let the Bride and groom touch each other. Obviously a statement about how marriage is meaningless. Or because after the cermony the Libertines violate the Bride and groom seperately. possibly stating that once state marries you they f*ck you sperately?

NExt where the Libertines pick the person with the best BUTT and their prize would be to be killed quickly rather than tortured. A statement on our disposable society?

Next the “guards” are picked based on the size of their Genitalia. and then the “guards” Start treating the Captured extremely bad even though the “guards” are captured kids themselves. Takes no profoessional analyst to see that that is easily a jab at the police. Police are normal people just like us but yet they act as if they are much more important and are insanely cruel based on the appearnace of power they have been granted.

It’s stuff like that That I was wondering that you had noticed…not necessarily how it relates to your own personal life…like being vegetarian cause of the Dining room scene and what not.

Bang on with your words about Eraserhead there Jizzwad.

Check it out Grmpy, just don’t try to view it as a film in the conventional sense. I read someone talking about it once, they said something like view it as a sort of moving abstract painting. Sort of like how Jizz explained it in a way.

Lost Highway is my all time favourite film!
It’s so messed up but once you “get it” it’s very straight forward. You just gotta work out what’s going on in Fred’s head. Massive clue in the opening credits.
Same with Mulholland Drive. Just great films, like puzzles they are.

I liked Inland Empire. I think it’s more of the Eraserhead metaphors formula rather than a twisted linear plot like LH and MD.

Most disturbing film ever for me?

Forgot about this flick. I don’t remember much about it other than my parents were upset that my brothers let me watch it with them. i was probably like 7 then.

I just thought all of that was a dream in some guys head that was in Jail. the rest of the movie are just his exploits and the different mind states as he see’s himself

Inland Empipre? I live in the Inland Empire. I’ve never heard of this flick. Is it the Sothern Ca. Inland Empire?

I REALLY want to see this flick apparently it was a made for TV movie over in Britian…PBS has aired it once in the US.?! I’m not a big fan of apocolyptic movies (Although I DO LIKE cyber punk landscapes/backgrounds/societies which is usually associated with post apocalyptic scenarios) but this one definately has my Interest. Just suposed to be so appropriate under the Reagen administration…SO I will try to NetFlix it if it is available…Other wise it may have to be an obscurity I find at Amoeba…They Fricken have EVERYTHING!

Threads is one of the most unpleasant, upsetting films I’ve ever seen. Quite possibly one of the most depressing films around. Put it on a tripple bill with Plague Dogs and Dead Ringers and most people would probably off themselves.

Eraserhead is great, saw it when I was like 14 and couldn’t sleep for a week. Started my obsession with Lynch (though I suppose Dune played a large part in that as well). I loved Inland Empire, I know there’s some people who just can’t get into the movie and think it’s arty excess but I think those are the people who sit there and try to dissect the thing from frame one so they can say “Oh he means this” etc. It is a bit like jazz, you need to just sit back and let it weave around you and just get totally lost in it. At one point I felt like the film had hypnotized me. I think it also contains a few of the most frightening scenes Lynch has ever come up with. Great soundtrack too, anyways I can go on about it. Inland is probably my favorite Lynch film, though its not for everybody, definitely my favorite flick this year (though No Country for Old Men and Eastern Promises were mind blowing as well). Not a bad year for films.

Grmpy - I’ll have to double check if this video story really has a copy of Salo, it’s been a while but I swore I saw it there. It’s in the LA area, a little hole in the wall next to Trader Joes on Fountain (if you live in the Silverlake area you’ve probably been by there). I know I saw that copy at Amoeba a few years back as well. Amoeba does indeed have everything, so much so that I walk in there and immediately forget everything I’m looking for.
