Saddest Songs Ever Written?

Which particular songs bring a lump to your throught every time you hear them?

Not necessarily songs from your favourite artists or even songs you particularly like - but there might be a particular line in the song or a particular melody that chokes you up. Maybe it recalls something that may have happened in your life or something, a sad memory. Perhaps you lost someone close to you and that song makes you think of them?

Admit it - those songs are out there!

For me personally -

  1. Stevie Wonder - Stay Gold

  2. Art Garfunkel - Bright Eyes

  3. Pink Floyd - Dogs

  4. America - Ventura Highway

  5. Morrissey - Suedehead

  6. Richard Clapton - Girls On The Avenue

  7. The Smiths - Asleep

  8. Pearl Jam - Oceans

  9. John Sebastian - Welcome Back

  10. Morrissey - Southpaw

  11. Pet Shop Boys - This Must Be The Place I’ve Waited Years To Leave

  12. Fleetwood Mac - Dreams

Look up any of those on youtube to gauge their ‘sadness’ for yourself if ya like…

Anyway, thoughts…?

Johnny Cash’s ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ is hard to listen to.

‘Polish Poem’ from INLAND EMPIRE is fairly melancholic. As is AIC’s ‘Nutshell’

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - The Weeping Song

Leonard cohen -if it be your will.

Warren Zevon’s recording of “Knocking of Heaven’s Door” is pretty rough.

Neil Young - Old Man

Since we’re on the subject of Neil how bout Only Love Can Break You Heart? Southern Man sounds a little gloomy too. But I can definatly listen to Neil anytime.

Brian Eno - An Ending (Ascent)
Beatles - Golden Slumbers
Slipknot - Vermillion pt II
King Crimson - Starless
Queen/Bowie - Under Pressure (not sad, but I always found the piece very moving)
Peter Gabriel - Here Comes the Flood (the Robert Fripp version)

Marilyn Manson - “In the Shadow of the Valley of Death”

I fall to pieces. patsy cline
crazy. patsy cline.
and warsaw by warsaw/joy division.

Forgot to mention sheryl crow’s “I shall believe” also her song (I think its called) “nobody said it would be easy.” Come to think of it, her Tuesday night music club album is probably the largest collection of sad lonely songs on one album by one artist.

“I’ll Remember You” from Skid Row was my cousin’s senior class song. He passed away a few months after graduation. It always brings back the memories, even 21 years later.

Not to get technical, but the song title is called " I remember you." It’s on their self titled debut album.

I think most of you got it wrong. When I meant ‘sad’, I meant…
