I like it. I think “Picture That” is the standout track. He still occasionally has that old fire, and the Floydian touches he applied to the overall structure of the album struck me as reverential, and not sarcastic or recycled. Frankly, it feels like a more accessible update of “Animals” for the modern age.
Sorry, agree to disagree, but this is album of the year material. I wish my father (a HUGE Floyd fan) was alive to hear this.
So good.
Yes, it’s musically a conscious throwback to Animals and The Wall (just as Pink Floyd’s Endless River was a conscious throwback to Shine On You Crazy Diamond) but I think that’s a good thing. And lyrically, it’s exactly what the world needs right now.
Looking forward to hearing this…hard to believe his last solo record was in 92…I loved Amused to Death too…just so great musically, lyrically and thematically…and those Jeff Beck solos, god damn…his solo career is just overall stunning(although parts of Radio Kaos left me a bit cold)… I was a him way back on the Pro’s and Con’s tour…and several times since…definitely need to check this new one tonight…and like lowelly I wish my dad was here to hear this as well as he was a huge fan…

I don’t know how the other members of the forum feel (and they’re of course entitled to their opinions) but I’ve been listening to Floyd for over thirty years, including their solo stuff, and Waters is the only consistently creative force in the solo arena I’ve heard. Forget anything Waters or Wright did (rubbish); Gilmour’s work is talented but very boring. Waters has also had his missteps – I don’t think anyone considers “Radio KAOS” to be a gem, or listens to his opera “Ca Ira” on the regular – but “Amused To Death” is a classic, and the new record is quickly establishing itself a place alongside.
As for “Animals,” the new Waters album is very much like a post-modern take on that album. The songs are shorter, the lyrics less obvious (in some spots), but the musical stylings and “special effects” hearken back to “Animals” in a biiiig way. And of course, there’s nothing here, lyrically, to beat the best line in the entire Floyd catalogue, which comes from “Dogs” and could apply brilliantly to today’s, uh, “president”: “It’s too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around.” Fucking brilliant.
Sorry. I got carried away. Floyd’s my favorite band.
