I really enjoyed Hellbent For Leather too. Lots of fun. And I’m hardly a metal guy.
This book is good for metal fans and non-fans alike because the author is really poking fun at himself and the scene while at the same time showing his fondness for it.
Almost forgot! My Appetite for Destruction by Steven Adler! It’s great! I loved Slash’s book but honestly, Steven is such a “dude” and it reads like some lucky teenager got a break. There’s one part where he’s so hooked, and so craving the crack, he does something so crazy I actually was shocked…it’s near the end of the book…

Gunnar, I think you’d find ‘Long Hard Road Out of Hell’ interesting and worthwhile, and I’m not speaking as a big MM fan. It’s a really good read, especially if you’re interested in MM the person moreso.

Thanks! I’ll put that in the queue as well. I think it’s easier to find than the Adler book.
This weekend while comic shopping got Johnny Ramone’s COMMANDO. Good read, lots of cool pictures I hadnt seen before. Johnny has been described as grouchy by some of his friends in the book, but of course that didnt come out in his recollections. He wrote this when he was ill, so it was a touch softer than I would have imagined, but its still the intense Johnny.
Pretty much all the Ramones were bitchy New Yorkers, it came across in pretty much any interview any of them did. They were total yentas, all of them - that’s what made them unique in their own “rock and roll” way. Sure, all bands have disagreements, but they disagreed like Felix disagreed with Oscar…old married couples…entertaining stuff.
Speaking of which, Dee Dee Ramone’s LEGEND OF A ROCK STAR is a goodie, but there’s humorous (obvious) fiction in it. Still good.
Just got “Dancing With Myself” by Billy Idol in the mail. My wife was ordering some stuff on Amazon and needed to increase the total to get free shipping so I told her to get me Billy Idol’s book and the new album.
This has been a great Billy week for me.
On Monday night after ordering the book and album, I remembered that Billy was going on tour so I bought a ticket for the LA Wiltern show coming up in February.
Billy Idol.
He rules.
I’ll let y’all know how the book is when I get to it.

The first Generation X album is a hands-down classic. I can still spin “Your Generation,” “Round and Round” and “Wild Dub” without too much push-back from ‘serious’ punk rockers.
And I agree with the critical assessment that classic (i.e. ‘Rebel Yell’-era) Billy Idol is music that you will hum along with even if you thoroughly despise the guy.
Yeah, but how can you despise that guy? I always liked Billy Idol…Flesh for Fantasy and Eyes Without a Face are 2 particular favorites…
.and Steve Stevens is a great underrated guitar player…he made 2 records with Tony Levin from King Crimson and Terry Bozzio from Zappa,UK and a myriad of others…they are so fucking good…
Yeah, I love Steve Stevens. He also has a solo album that is flamenco rock called “Flamenco a GoGo” which I got a long time ago, which is pretty cool too.

I bear no malice towards Mr. Idol. It’s all just harmless, sneering, “ROWWWWWLL!!!”-ing fun. If he wants to be taken seriously as an artist that will make me change my perspective on life and the universe, well, I might have some arguments with the guy, but I have a certain admiration for his conviction in the character that he plays to the hilt.
“The Bloody Reign of Slayer” is what I am reading right now.
There’s a Pantera one coming out by Rex that I’m stoked for. “101 Proof” or something?
I’m sure there’s more…
That Slayer book was a bit underwhelming, the author seems to not really actually like Slayer, he’s really dismissive of them. I got into a row with him online after i’d read it, about something non-Slayer-related, he’s an arsehole, i told him his book was crap.
The Rex book is great, i think it came out about a year ago, i’ve had it for a good while anyway. Phil Anselmo’s book is coming out next year though, now that promises to be a crazy read.

The Long Hard Road Out Of Hell (Marilyn Manson)
.
I’ve come very close to buying this one many times and read short bursts of it in the book store. I’m kind of cautious of it, though, as it seems sort of like a bunch of hyperinflated bullcrap and hyperbole.
Do you think the non-fan (I’m not a hater of MM, I’m just kind of apathetic about his music, though I find him interesting as a person) would like this book as well?[/reply]
I think you’ll enjoy it, it’s really funny. As far as i remember one chapter starts with the line, “Now i have sucked the dicks of many guys”, or something to that effect. Good book, a real page turner. Not as good as The Dirt, but then what is? I’ve read 3 Crue books and i don’t actually like their music They’re an interesting group of guys. Slash’s book is great too, especially the part when he’s having a shower in rehab and hallucinates a tiny Predator stalking him. It "attacks " him in the shower cubicle, in a panic he smashes clean through the glass door and runs naked out of the place onto a golf course. Some great stuff in there.
Slash’s Bio was ok probably disappointed with it because I knew a ton of that stuff already.
I think Adler’s Bio was better and I haven’t read Duffs yet. I probably won’t unless I can get it on the cheap.
Would love to read an Izzy stradlin bio if he ever wrote one. I would imagine the quietest dude in that band would have a ton of shit to say.
Yeah, Adler’s book was great, you’ll enjoy Duff’s too, he’s a funny, smart man who knows how to tell a good story [:)]
