anybody have a convenient and free way to do this?
VLC and streamrecorder don’t seem to work. won’t even play it let alone record it.

get Audacity, set the recording input to sound card.
I don’t have that option under my audacity
Download Soundflower and use that with Audacity to change the input and outputs. It’ll allow you to record anything played on your computer.
you shud kinda set recording devices in windows where you can choose between mic, line in, or w/e. and there should be an option like Stereo Mix. where this is done depends on what windows version you are using and what sound card you have.
and then you can record everything that goes to your sound card output; its just like taping something, hehe. however close other programs like skype or any IMs cuz if some other sound is produced (message, error, anything), it will be recorded as well.
if it’s a soundcard that is built-in the motherboard, then you will definately have very quiet digital noise when doing that that you will hear only when there’s no music or sounds and at very high volumes.
