Lemmy was such an enormous icon and hero to me too. He just stood for everything that is good and awesome and so many of us were blessed to know him through the music. But he was so accessible to his fans that almost every Motorhead fan I know and have met have at least “one good Lemmy story”.
I have mine, of course, and it was so cool to bond yesterday with so many people whose lives have been changed by his music and his existence. We all shared so many stories and laughs. Also, we rocked out and partied like nobody’s business and shared cigarettes and Jack Daniels all over the strip.
I didn’t care to stand in line all day to go inside the Rainbow. Honestly, I looked in there and saw people mostly sitting down and probably guarding their seats like Fort Knox. And I didn’t care to anxiously peek in limo windows wondering what rockstar might be ushered in the back door next.
I just wanted to party. And a helluva party it was. I could only stay a few hours as I had to go back afterwards to pick up my wife for dinner, but I would have atayed all night if I could. So much love all around and so many excellent people. You could just go up to random strangers and shout “LEMMY!” and give 'em a hug or high-five them.
And people came literally from all over the world. When I first arrived I was hanging with some dudes that drove in from San Diego and Ventura. Then I was partying with guys that came from San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Phoenix, Arizona. Soon thereafter I was palling with a hardcore dude from Pittsburgh. By the time I left I was rocking out with a couple cats that flew in from Germany.
Anyway, I almost didn’t go out for this event, but I just couldn’t miss the opportunity. I owe it to Lemmy. I can never repay this great man for all he’s done for us, but to miss this would have been unforgivable and I’d regret it forever.
