Rio Grande Blood Review 8/10

Blabbermouth tosses their 2 cents into the mix:

Typical review. Dark Side of the Spoon and Filth Pig are written off as “drug-addled fuck ups” and the new shit is a “return to form”. Plus Animositisomina is completely ignored.

Bet this guy didn’t even listen to Dark Side of the Spoon or Filth Pig. Probably surfed online and checked out some stupid overview of Ministry’s career somewhere.

Blah blah “return to form” my ass…more like “stopped evolving” “derivative” or “Psalm 71” (Houses of the Mole being Psalm 70)

It’s so depressing when any kind of true innovation is always written off as “pretentious”, “drug addled” etc.

Meanwhile mediocre attempts at rehashing the glory days are always celebrated as a “return to form” by these idiots (and most fans as well)

Some fuckwad on the Ministry group at Myspace tried to inform me that Houses and Rio were the albums Ministry should have been making instead of Filth Pig and Dark Side at that time. Hey, at least SOMEBODY thinks they’ve returned to form. A carbon-copy form, I guess. He can keep the pink copy, along with his shitty misguided views.

They should have released Houses and RGB right after Psalm. They would have sold a ton in retrospect. However, the glossing over of Filthpig and DSOTS is expected, just wrong.

Actually Bergman usually does a good job with his reviews, he’s just a big metal fan.

What a shit review. Anyone who describes a song as “dirge-like” should not be reviewing music.

About the whole post-Barker bashing, if I remember correctly ‘Filth Pig’ and ‘DSOTS’ were really badly received when they were released, EVEN on this board (or more on the version before the version before of this board…).

In the press those albums certainly got slagged. It seems like music critics of all stripes froze their ideas of what Ministry “should be” with Psalm 69. Now that Al is just recycling that approach over and over, Ministry’s reviews keep getting better and better, as the level of creativity in the music gets lower and lower. I guess more people are simply more comfortable with the familiar than with things that are at all challenging.

I was just combing through some of the old interviews on this site the other day and was struck by how Al during the Filth Pig era kept talking about how recycling the Psalm 69 approach was the last thing he’d ever want to do. It made me chuckle. Maybe someone should send him links to those interviews…

I thought RGB was a total disaster except for “Yellow Cake”.
MINISTRY at their best are staccato bursts of simple, direct, lethal guitar riffing, harsh vocals and heaps of distortion and fuzz over the whole noisy mess.
No, not really

Spin give RGB two stars in their new issue, Rolling stone gave Mole’ two when it was released as well. Not everyone in the press is eating the new stuff up.

Filth Pig got slagged?

I remember when it got released in Sweden it got respectable 4/5 in one of the major newspapers. Ministry got a full front page with info/images in the “culture” section of THE biggest daily newspaper here as well.
It was up on the sales charts too!

…But it took me some time to digest it myself
Very good album.

I don’t remember what the press thought, but the fan reaction to Filth pig was often virulent.

It took me a long time to love Filth Pig. Its still great. One of the best.

This board slagged Animos and Dark Side pretty good as well.

virulent.

had to google that one - thanks for upping my vocab one more word. heh
