For the Morrissey fans, because I know there’s a few around.
First impression: it’s nowhere near as bad as I expected. It’s not great either, but it is actually pretty good. I love the production – Visconti and Morrissey really is a winning combination, I suppose you could describe the general sound as “theatrical”. It’s very over-the-top in places and somehow it manages to work perfectly. “Life is a Pigsty” is a great track despite it’s title, really epic and really beautiful, its just a shame the lyrics let it down somewhat. And that’s really the biggest problem with the album. Ironically, when the band and the producer are firing on all cylinders for the first time since “Southpaw” Morrissey’s let the team down. You will cringe. But he does still does get the odd good one out there; you have to be stony-faced bastard not to crack a smile at “I entered nothing and nothing entered me” from the lead single “You Have Killed Me”. Overall I think it’s a really nice fusion of the various styles he’s explored, you’ve got progressive rock at points, glam rock at others, the sort of poppier “Viva Hate”/“Bona Drag” era sound and there’s actually a few of what I’d describe as power-ballads almost on there too.
The old fire is definitely back. This is the album “You Are The Quarry” should have been; Morrissey’s always at his best when he’s pushing boundaries, and he certainly does that on this album.
Anyone else got this yet? It’s on OiNK if anyone here has an account there. Otherwise I’d imagine it will pop up on slsk and Pirate Bay within the next few days if it hasn’t already.
