My girlfriend is currently nutty for this boy/girl duo. As far as pop goes, they’re alright with me. The funny thing to me is my last girlfriend was a huge fan of the guy’s last band- he used to play guitar for Poison the Well. That’s a musical about-face if I’ve ever heard one.
I kinda liked them, but they get annoying to me quick.
btw, I’m a HUGE Funkadelic fan, and here’s the song which Rill Rill samples, quite bluntly, not done in a hip hop sort of way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXxs4vE4-oA
to me, Can You Get to That and Bank In Our Minds are the two weakest songs from the Maggot Brain album. any guitar lover should check out the title track, as it has one of the greatest guitar solos in history (indeed, it’s a 9 min long guitar solo, with the rest of the band nearly muted in the background) , . The entire record is worth checking out and sounds nothing like Can You Get to That.
as for Paul and funk, I wouldn’t be surprised if he dug funk. I feel/hear a bit of funk in some of his playing at times. At the very least, I see him respecting people like Bootsy Collins, check out this killer bass playing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgrOD4PZzuY
I saw them live. The combination of super loud industrial-ish beats, piercing guitars and cutesy white girl hip hop vocals was bordering between interesting and obnoxious.
I don’t enjoy them but I’m glad they’re bringing some heaviness back into the quasi-mainstream in a way that is not metal-oriented.
The girl has this “rebellious hot cheerleader turned outcast” vibe that bugs me but objectively I think they’re not bad and they’re at least doing something interesting.
