Thanks! I look forward to checking this out later.
I think he’s an amazing producer.
No, I don’t care about Slipknot or Shakira, but a producer doesn’t change that. What is rad is when he gets contracted by a band/artist that I already dig because he just seems to bring out something great.
I REALLY love those American Johnny Cash discs.
His biggest skill is bringing out the best in musicians who haven’t done anything worthwhile in ages. See: Cash, Black Sabbath, Neil Diamond, Metallica.
I hope he suddenly discovers Ministry and gives Al a call.
The Cult-Electric
YASSSSSS!!!

That would be awesome.
I was meaning to ask about that Neil Diamond album, actually. Did you try it?

That album is great, i really enjoyed it. I like Rubin a lot, he really does know how to get a lot out of those established, maybe fading, artists. He’s produced a lot of my favourite albums, but i think he’s also done some terrible production here and there. Metallica’s EP after Death Magnetic was pretty much unlistenable because of his production.
Both Neil Diamond albums are really good - he reminded Neil that he started out as a songwriter, not a Vegas guy in a rhinestone suit. They did two together, and the first one is the best.
As for Metallica, yeah the mix is awful. And we have to blame Rubin for that. But we also have to thank him for forcing them to write decent metal tunes again. So that’s kind of a tossup.

Ah, i didn’t realise there’d been a 2nd Neil Diamond album, must check it out. I thought Death Magnetic was great, hopefully Rubin will be around next time again, to pull another good record out of Metallica.
I love Death Magnetic.
I listened to a few samples of “Beyond Magnetic” or whatever it was called and had no interest. It was terrible.
Was it even a new thing? I just thought it was from scrapped cuts from the DM sessions (and scrapped for obvious reasons). Shame on Rick if he had any part of that.

I think they were actual songs that didn’t make it onto the album, but if i remember right a couple of them might have riffs that ended up in tracks that did make it onto the album. A couple of the songs on the EP were good enough, but it’s just so badly produced that i only listened to it twice. Normally i’m not one to really complain about production, but it was awful.
Yeah, I’m not a “this production is shit” guy either. But that production was definitely shit. It just sounded so fake and cheap. Like they recorded it straight onto a laptop or something. I might go back and listen to a few as I really only skimmed through a couple tracks before getting nauseous, but I think it was about the worst I’d heard from Metallica.

C’mon now! Let’s not forget Lulu[;)]
Regarding Beyond Magnetic’s shit sound;
“During the Death Magnetic album sessions in 2007 and 2008, we originally recorded 14 songs. When it came time to pick the songs for the final album, we decided on 10 songs that you’ve all come to know over the last three years… Some of you may have heard bits and pieces of those other songs on ‘Mission Metallica’ (remember ‘Mission Metallica’?!) or heard rumors about them during the recording process, and wondered, ‘What ever happened to those other four songs???.’ We kept them in the vault and decided to pull them just for this special celebration, so here are the four leftover tracks from the Death Magnetic sessions. They are ROUGH mixes, unfinished to their original degree of mixing from March '08. These four songs were released as a gift to our closest fans, the members of our Fan Club, to enjoy. Now they’re being made available to you.”
“beyond magnetic” was basically songs in the stages of being between demo and semi-finished track, so it’s kind of pointless to search for good production there and ye, it’s album leftovers.
i’m surprised nobody mentioned that you can actually hear digital clipping on “death magnetic”, which was ‘produced’ by rick rubin - i dunno what he did for this particular case, but i skipped thru the “making of” movie about this album and haven’t seen him appear in the studio during entire 1hr 30min of edited footage.

That’s all anybody did on here when that album came out. I believe there was one thread that pointed users in the direction of a guitar hero download that didn’t suffer from the clipping that the album did, and then proceeded to bitch that it’s bullshit that a video game has better production than the actual album.
Yeah, it was beaten to death on Piss Army too.
I had never even heard the term before.
Maybe I’m just crap at hearing such nuances, or maybe I just get caught up in the music, but I don’t hear this “clipping” whatever the heck that even is.
Supposedly the tops of the frequencies or whatever are cut because they extend higher than the sound wave can recognize or some shit that only dogs can hear. Ive never heard it even after it was explained. Just one more thing for people to bitch at, Cause, you know, you’re only cool unless you have something to talk shit about that most people dont notice, cause thats how hardcore you are.
the suffering subject was dynamic range, not the ‘shit that dogs can hear’, but it’s a whole different subject anyway, however, rick rubin has left his legacy in the so called ‘loudness wars’ with that record. his latest production of zz top album was just as bad.
i mean there must be alot credibility in his production, so many artists said that he is great and stuff; for example slayer were amazed “wow, this is great, we can actually hear everything now” after he produced their ‘reign in blood’, etc, but i don’t see what he ‘brought out’ for example from metallica or zz top in death magnetic and la futura albums.
This isn’t just audiophile stuff - it’s a serious production flaw.
See how all the peaks are cut off and leveled out? You just get one big blast of noise with no dynamic range. You don’t have to have trained ears to hear that shit.
I still can’t hear it.
I still can’t hear it.
Then you’re as fuckin’ deaf as Rubin.
