Rick and Morty?

Anybody watch this show?
I’ve been watching since about the end of season 2. It’s fuckin great! really smart. they add a lot of pop science and fun shit like that. I think my favorite episode is Mortynight run, with the intelligent gas life they name fart. LOL.

Anyway, I post now because the mid season just started and that episode was weird as shit. I’ve watched it 4 times already and I can’t figure it out. It’s a bunch of non-sequiturs it seems, but it’s all about story telling. The only thing I can really come up with is the writers taking their characters back from the fans. (You know how fan bases get super possessive and the writers start writing to satisfy those fans?) Each train car represents a section of fans. The first car is the people that have turned on the show and think it sucks now. The second car is the people that adore the show and it can do no wrong and the 3rd car is the people that pretend to like it because other people like it. Ya’ know, just kinda “like” it cause it’s the “it” thing or whatever.

But some things I still can’t place. The ticket guy? What does his playing the ticket game away from the train have to do with anything? And why does his situation in the game translate to "real life?’ or is it not “real life?” either way what’s his relevance? Also, what is Story Lord’s role? Just to prove that the writers can take the show anyway they want? They don’t have to follow conventional story telling? (While still following conventional story telling?)

Also, the start of this season was dark as hell. that wasp scene in the first episode was disturbing as shit! and the whole Death crystal story line in it is morbid (and depressing), especially when you see what Morty was chasing.

Anyway, ideas from anyone watching this mid season premiere?

It’s a self parody of the “Dan Harmon story circle.” https://channel101.fandom.com/wiki/Story_Structure_101:_Super_Basic_Shit

Im unfamilar with that. ill check your link in a bit gotta go pick up dinner. Thanks for the link

Everyone jerks off about how awesome this show is but I just have no patience for it. Maybe I’m just old and grumpy but it just fails to connect with me. I might try again this week.

That’s a shame. It really is quite clever. I would say start with “Mortynight Run” (Season 2 Episode 2). Then maybe Anatomy Park (They set up a theme park inside a homeless man) Season 2 Episode 3) Look Whose Purging Now (Season 2 episode 9) or Rest and Ricklaxation (Season 3 Episode 6). “Meeseeks and Destroy” (Season 1 Episode 4) is hysterical too. Really, there’s a lot of starting points but there are plenty that you SHOULDN’T start with either, 'cause you have to be familiar with the characters for them to be good.

The only episode that is absolutely horrendous is the “Get Schwifty” episode. Skip it. Also, “Pickle Rick,” you can skip until you get familiar with the show otherwise it will be out of context and come off dumb.

This was really good. Thanks for the link. I’m gonna watch it again and try to apply the story circle… I obviously don’t have it memorized but I’ll see how much I retained …

Holy shit, there were so many story circles going at once… I kinda wish I knew the story circle better because I bet that episode would be even better. stories within stories within stories. fuckin’ smart. and it all kept circling back to the main story which was shown to be the stupid toy train at the end which made it not a big circle… Holy shit I’m dizzy. little circles within the bigger circle which is still inside a bigger circle when you think of RIck and Morty’s over all catalog. That was cool. only Rick and Morty would come with homework!
Thanks again for sharing that link with me. Fuckin’ fun!

I’m vaguely familiar with this cartoon never watched it tho. When I’m in the mood for cartoons i usually go for old school anime. Ghost In The Shell, Berzerk, Claymore.

I know Family Guy gets a lotta flak from the smarmies but its pretty fucking funny imo.

It took me a long time to get in Family Guy probably. A Loooooooooong time. But i definitely enjoy some Family Guy. But there are definitely some really SHITTY Family Guy episodes. but there are some really good ones too! That Simon & garfunkel rip off episode is brilliant.
