“No doubt as a reaction to all the bad press he’s been giving record labels, Universal/Interscope has relieved Trent Reznor of his contractual duties. As of today, Nine Inch Nails is working without a useless money-grubbing middleman and going straight to the fans. The revolution continues…”
Trent Reznor just gets it. Marketing genius - so we’ll have to see what steps he’s going to take now…
oh yeah!!! that’s right. forgot about that one, cuz i don’t dig reznor remix releases (except fixed which was super awesome).
he also said that when he’s off the label they might release some sort of “greatest hits” package or whatever, and as usually, throwing in some bonuses. i just wanna hear the with teeth era outtakes in studio form…
smart move from a smart guy.not surprised. what else to do in this environment when labels don’t do anything for you. not even trent? guess hannah montana rules the day. it is disney after all behind that abomination that’s selling a lot of seats.
grab the loaf of white bread and chew on it so you don’t have to utter a word.or care.
wow.american music culture needs revamping of some sort.
it comes and goes in cycles. ministry and NIN are classic examples of that.
try explaining that to a “new” journalist who doesn’t know P Diddy from Bo Diddley. nobody cares about history anymore. toss the fake dreads to one side and say, “Say wha…”.
sorry to rant, just sick of ignorance that passes as a living breathing human something.
trent’s right in what he’s doing.
look at this,

I think this is great. I think he plans on selling digital copies of his future material for 4 bucks, which would be awesome. More than he would’ve gotten with interscope. I just wonder though; he’s free from label now, but when it comes to distribution, radio play, promotion and touring, what is he going to do? I can give a shit less about radio play and promotion. I don’t listen to the radio at all, it’s shit and i’ll live without. But when releasing a cd, which he’s said in interviews that he will; how will you distribute and tour? I know he has the money for it, so will he just reach down into his pockets for all of this?
Either way, it’s a great move. Radiohead’s doing this too. They announced their new album was finished last week…comes out on wednesday - for free (or whatever you choose to contribute). Labels will hopefully learn or crumble in the next few years…sorry al.
I heard an interview with Trent when he was in oz not that long ago, and he said he pretty much had to pay for his own tours anyway. Surely he would easliy make the $$ back on merchandise, $80 jumpers sell like hot-cakes for some reason.
Good for Trent. Between this, the Radiohead album and all that, it seems that the future of music distribution may be here today. Can’t say I feel any sympathy for the record company fuckers who have been milking the artists and fans for every penny they can get for the past 50+ years.
The one thing that nobody is mentioning about radiohead is how they are supposedly signing a record deal with either warner bros or ato (a part of rca) soon for their new album. So it’s not like they are totally saying fuck you to the majors. Their fans will still buy the cd even if the mp3s are out for months because their fans are very dedicated (from what ive seen at least). But don’t get me wrong, i still think that it is great that they are pretty much giving away their mp3s. At least someone is trying something.
The state of the record labels right now are make as much money off the artist as humanly possibly and being completely insincere and greedy in the process. They sue and alienate fans and just regular day-to-day people. They’re monsters proving a point that they’re greedy, demanding money we all know they don’t need. They deserve to crumble.
And speaking of radiohead. 1) I’m a little let down that they are signing to a label. You have to tour and get your distribution, but it kind of defeats the purpose, doesn’t it? I feel a little bad though, I paid 0.00 for the download. I should’ve contributed at least 4, since i’m pretty sure from here on out i’m not buying cds as much anymore.
They need to hurry the fuck up and release that album already! It’s only 8:30 here, so there’s still time, but i’m hoping midnight.
so he chooses to change business partners. big fucking deal. as some of you have pointed out already. for a mainstream artist like Reznor it takes a lot of effort and manpower to release/distribute/tour. this can’t be pulled off with a one man basement operation. the day has yet to come that NIN turns into a second Fugazi. Reznor is as much a business man as the people he sums up under ‘useless record company scum’, so who gives a shit whether or not he parts with one and hooks up with another. SMALLER or NEW doesn’t necessarily mean different. and I bet ya anything, his future releases will still have MAJOR written all over them, and if it is only for distributional reasons. but like I said before, I couldn’t care less…
NINE INCH NAILS mainman Trent Reznor is about to get busy in the studio working on the follow-up to this year’s “Year Zero”, a process he couldn’t begin until the expiration of the band’s deal with Interscope due to contractual reasons. In addition, Billboard understands Reznor, in keeping with past practices, will not decide how to actually release, market and promote the next album until the music is finished.
There will be new NINE INCH NAILS product before the end of the year, however. The remix album “Y34RZ3R0R3MIX3D” is due November 20 via Interscope and feature remakes of “Year Zero” songs by Fennesz, the Faint, Ladytron and Saul Williams, among others.
Interscope holds the rights to release a greatest hits collection at some point in the future, but it is unknown when such a project could see the light of day. It is also unclear what the fate would be of any potential NINE INCH NAILS archival releases, particularly if the material was recorded during the band’s Interscope tenure.
Upon the release of Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D, Trent and co. will launch [url “http://remix.nin.com/”]remix.nin.com, designed as a hub for submission and discussion of fan remixes.

Why Fenessz, why??
Why have you gone and soiled yr good name and become involved with this purveyor of kiddie goth electro angst??
What’s next? A Billy Corgan collaboration?
If Merzbow were dead he’d be rolling in his grave.
I’m guessing there’ll be some sort of etching on that side, or a secret track that ties into the whole world of Year Zero thing, or I dunno, SOMETHING interesting. It’s rare for Trent not give you the full value for your dollar.
