Austin’s True Believers are back, mightier than ever. Alejandro Escovedo, Javier Escovedo, Jon Dee Graham, Denny DeGorio, and Rey Washam have re-grouped 30+ years after they originally formed and their recent live shows have been the stuff of legend here in Austin.
Hmm… I like Rey Washam’s drumming a lot (Scratch Acid, etc.), but after watching the show on youtube (on the page wempathy links to), this might just be a bit too southern/country/texas/austin/classic-rock for me (whatever you want to call it …where the guitar goes: “dang de dang de dang boowah”). Sounds like neil young. I’ve given it two listens now, and it’s just too much. I generally hate that kind of stuff (hate ZZ Top, Skynard, etc.).
I guess I get the southern thing, it being texas, but did they always sound this soft-classic-rocky? There is a kind of punkyness there, but it’s very mild-mannered and adult-contemporary sounding. Have they mellowed?
EDIT: wikipedia says they are “roots rock/alternative country” and “americana” earlier on the page (according to the band leader’s wiki page). That’s what I was looking for the correct term for.
