over the weekend M-HD played a 30 min R.E.M. show from a few months ago.
wow. REM is bad now. I completely understand why grmpy would think they are the worst band ever. God man. Whew. Bad. However, with that said… this band was awesome back in the day. 82-87 I’m not sure if my band would suck after playing that long, but I’d do my damned-est not to let that happen. REM was actually the first band I even owned a “bootleg” of. bought a tape of a murmur show that the label was printed on some neon green paper. i’ll never forget it. they used to be great. just wanted to let some of you know that who only see the last 15 years of them.
i 've never understood the appeal of REM. sleepy-ass music . did like some of the videos tho.
i’m happy for rieflin. he’s got a solid gig, likes everybody there, which is key, and gets to pay his bills and see the world.
The IRS-era REM is classic stuff, I’ll always like the 82-87 material. I think they must have sold their souls as part of the WB deal in '89. Pretty sad that I still think of “Stand” as the theme song to Get A Life. Still, I probably like a handful of songs over the past several albums, and the new album is actually pretty good. I saw them live in '95, and it was a good show (Begin The Begin live, just awesome). I really don’t think of anything they’ve done after '89 as ‘classic’. I guess Losing My Religion might be considered a classic by some, but I think the success of that one is unfortunately what sent them down this path of mediocrity. I can understand how some people might be completely annoyed by Michael Stipe and his voice, the cheesy string-filled melodies, the beatnik hipster image they try to portray, but they really were once a great band, not so long ago (before the pile of steaming crap that is Shiny Happy People).
Their early bootlegs (Murmer-era) are definitely worth tracking down (not hard to find online these days). A good number of them are surprisingly great quality (lots of soundboards), and the performances are very energetic (and fast). I can’t fathom ever considering them ‘worst band ever’, there’s plenty of garbage out there that’s a million times worse.
I really like early stuff - Reckoning’s my favorite. Almost everything Green and earlier’s a good solid listen. Out Of Time’s a steaming pile (except for Belong) and Automatic For The People has some solid, dark stuff on it. The new one’s decent as well. Al the others are best left forgotten.
Automatic is the only decent album, but even still, FUCK REM. I’m Still waiting for them to die slow, horribly painful, agonizing deaths. Rieflin, get out while you can, shit splatters wouldn’t want you to take a hit cause you’re trying to eek out a living.

Hmmm, must’ve been a chic. So, which song was it - The One I Love, or Everybody Hurts?[/quote]
Neither, it was their whole fricken catalogue! And of course it was a chick, what else could inspire such blind hatred? and before she came along and ruined all things REM Automatic was still their best album. Not one bad song on the CD. Night swimming was probably my favorite with Sweetness Follows coming in a close second and Drive coming in third. Bought that whore a shit load of bootlegs… wasted time…FUCK REM
