Recording guitar/bass to computer

I’m trying to be cheap and record onto my computer with just an adapter and record with Acid. My question is are there different adapters,as in guitar to usb, mic jack, line in? If so which one is the best?

There are plenty of USB audio interfaces out there which act as a second soundcard. Dunno what would be the best one. If you want the best be prepared to part with a silly amount of money.
Depends what you’re wanting to do. You can get ones with lots of inputs, but they’d be unnecessary if you’re only gonna be recording one thing at a time.
Are you gonna be using virtual amp modeling or source it from a real amp?

Probably going from a real amp right now. I’m pretty far behind as to putting music onto and together on my computer. I bought a cable to usb adapter yesterday, but before I opened it I wanted to make sure there wasn’t a better input option than usb.

In my experience, connecting your amp or pedal straight to the line-in jack of your sound card is good enough for a semi-professional sound. It would help if it is a good sound card - the Creative ones have probably the best quality/price ratio, although for truly professional sound you’d need to invest in something far more expensive from Yamaha or whatever. It all also depends on what kind of music you want to create - for a sound which preserves live dynamics etc. a simple computer and guitar setup will never suffice, although it is quite suitable if all you want is to record riffs that will later be sampled and/or have applied shitloads of effects on them…

I agree with this. I wouldn’t buy an additional interface until you try recording directly into you soundcard input. I’ve recorded quite a bit (guitar, vox, bass, keyboard) and mine is not even a good card. With all the plug-ins (mostly free) and sound editing software available now, you can really get a pretty decent sound.
