Recommend me stuff like...

Echo And The Bunnymen, Comsat Angels, The Chameleons, The Sound, Joy Division, Low Life, Magazine, Bauhaus

I am mainly interested in that forlorn depressive mood these bands share. Please, no well known bands since I probably know of them. Basically, I want to hear more stuff like it so anything obscure you might be aware of, let me know!

The Opposition - Breaking The Silence (1981)
The singer’s voice is reminiscent of Jaz Coleman’s melodic voice. Solid album, the rest of their catalogue is still out of print, but this one has been re-issued. Dark, angsty mood, some intense rhythms and heavily FX’d guitars, and some good bass lines to boot. One of my favorite post-punk records.

Crispy Ambulance - The Plateau Phase (1982)
The singer has a slow, somber voice (though in the range of say, Julian Cope). Lots of good post-punk beats that threaten to take off but never do, and plenty of dissonant guitar. Defintely some Joy Division influence.

The Past 7 Days - Raindance 12’’ (1981)
4AD band who never released another record after this. Shame, it’s a great single with a dark atmosphere, nervous vocals, choppy guitars, some synth pads, and a slow offbeat rhythm. If you can’t find this song online, let me know, I’ll send it to ya.

Sad Lovers & Giants - Epic Garden Music (1982)
Not sure if this one is bordering on ‘well-known’, but it’s definitely worthy of the term ‘post-punk classic’. Great album from top to bottom. Sort of a hybrid of Modern English’s pre-I Melt With You material, elements of Teardrop Explodes, Romeo Void (sax in one or two songs). Spacious arrangements, some synths, tribal Chameleons-like rhythms, nasal new-wave male vox, lots of muted guitar a la Andy Summers, some good chord arrangements too. One song, “Lost In A Moment” almost sounds like The Smiths with a Juno-6!

THANK YOU.

I’ll start looking for this stuff on the net.

I sent some info to you via PM.

Got it, thanks again!
If you have any more recommendations Im all ears.

I recommend Primal Scream’s “Vanishing Point” album. It’s one of my favorite albums to listen to when you’re in that mood, it’s just such a fucked record, very trippy, excellent production.

The Cure’s catalogue from 80-82. The albums Seventeen Seconds, Faith, and possibly Pornography seem to fit with that “genre”. Maybe even a little Siouxsie and the Banshees. Only ones other than the ones you’ve listed that I can think of to fit that category.

Thought of a couple more…

Section 25 - Always Now (1981)
Factory label mates with JD/NO. This album has lots of JD influence, esp. on drums, and there’s some early Wire influence present as well. .There are a few instrumentals on here that are really good. Not so much droning, but more trancey, if that makes sense. S25 headed in a more electronic direction a couple of years later. This is probably their rawest material to hear.

Xmal Deutschland - Fetisch (1983)
Sort of a German Siouxsie & The Banshees circa Juju. Good post-punk beats and guitars, and the singer is definitely going for that Siouxsie Sioux sound on vox…that or it’s just coincidence. It’s not slow, dirgey, or super dark like you might be looking for, but it fits within the genre, and you might like them. They were on 4AD back in the day (83-87).

Oh yeah…hey, I used to like those guys.

‘Juju’ by Siouxsie And The Banshees is quite good too - as is ‘Psycho Candy’ by The Jesus And Mary Chain. I played that album to death in the early 90’s.

The March Violets - “The Botanic Verses”

Think the Sisters of Mercy/Bauhaus with dual male/female vocals and a subtle, somewhat bizzare sense of humor. This particular record kinda serves as a best-of, and it’s the only one I know of that’s still in print. Good stuff, the lot. Not quite as dreary as the Sisters, but they have their moments.

EDIT: “Crispy Ambulance” wins the award for most evocative band name ever. [cool]

How could I forget The Jesus and Mary Chain! Psychocandy is an amazing album, lots of noise.
