Deicide - Stench of Redemption. Yup. I know. Considering the choices above it’s kinda like trying to submit a soapbox derby car into a A Rolls Royce convention…but hey - kids wuv Satan and so do I.
Duds:
Ministry
Isis
Slayer
Revolting Cocks
Celtic Frost
Disagree with the Celtic Frost choice there, Pugsley. Also, what about Mastodon?!?!? Surely that deserves a mention.
Good call with the Cocks though. Thoroughly embarrassing!!!

Totally owe Peligro my second born’s life for getting me into Whitehouse - already promised my daughter to an Isreali merchant trader for that rare Lard LP, sorry! This year’s album was ace. [cool]
And I’m surprised that he approved of the Tool album. Not bad, though I shelved it after a week. Perhaps I should give it another go.
As far as all the death metal and thrash goes, you gits can keep it to yourselves.

I agree with most of this list (haven’t heard a few of the albums mentioned) except I think, after repeated listens, that the new Liars album ‘Drums Not Dead’ is a bit overrated.

Best album I hated at first and then grew to love:
Revolting Cocks - Cocked & Loaded
A man after my own heart. I thought Silent Shout was easily the best album of the year and also agree that Cocked & Loaded is definitely an album that got better and better with each listen.
I also really dug the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On the Radio, the new Beck and the latest Rapoon. I thought '06 was a pretty good year for music all things said.
Silent Shout is a great album and i need to see them live sometime even if they don’t actually play anything. Their older cd’s just finally got released in America.
i lose track of what i listened to earlier this year but my fav album lately has been Mahogany’s Connectivity. It has a few tracks produced by Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins. so if you like them check it out.
I love you but have chosen darkness (barker produced) is a good album. as is Mogwai’s - Zidane soundtrack.
this has also been a great year for some deluxe/remastered 2cd sets like sebadoh’s III and The Cure’s top/head on the door and Glove’s Blue Sunshine.
after looking at my list i think i might have finally given up on heavier music.
Coil - The Ape of Naples (came out slightly before 06 but I’m throwing it on here anyways)
The Knife - Silent Shout
Converge - No Heroes
Genghis Tron - Dead Mountain Mouth
Zombi - Surface to Air
Boards of Canada - Trans Canada Highway
Tv On the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
Aphex Twin - Chosen Lords
I like Mastadon but for some reason the new album didn’t do much for me. Converge blew them away live too.
Mastodon is the best in 2006…how can you say it’s bad?
I did love ‘Remission’ when it came out and still love that album.
But the two albums that came after didn’t really interest me. I think they lost something since that first album (and the EP).
So, yes the new Mastodon was also a disappointment… Too bad for a band that I liked so much…
Yeah. It’s totally not a grower. I don’t hate it - just leaves me feeling a little…empty. Plus the lyrics are really dull and repetive (ie Life Is A Pigsty).
I’ve got quite a bit of catching up to do - new Aphex Twin, Robin Guthrie, David Gilmour, Celtic Frost, etc.
I actually liked the Thom Yorke solo effort, but it’s got nothing on some good Radiohead. I’ve gotta throw Mono’s “You Are There” and She Wants Revenge (S/T) into the ring. Ambient grandness and ghey synthpop suit me well, what can I say?
And why is Jizzwad the only one that likes Tom Waits here, hm?
EDIT: Nellie Mckay’s “Pretty Little Head” was a lot of fun. Snarky as fuck.

10000 Days was … good but flawed. It doesn’t freally flow too well as an album, particularly towards the end. The title track is phenomenal as is Lipan Conjuring/Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned. But the thing is, these two centrepiece tracks which take up over half an hour between them, sound like they are from completely different albums. It sounds more like a greatest hits package almost - in that, it’s a bit all over the place. Also, Right in Two and Vicarious seem really preachy and forced, and the lyrics are trite and clumsy. It’s almost like they’ve ‘dumbed down’ their lyrics with these two tracks to reach a wider audience. Lateralus was much more focused and lyrically complex. Way more intriguing and mysterious.
But it’s still a very good album in many other ways - take away those two ‘mega’ tracks however and you’re left with very little substance. Very little that seperates them from countless other ‘alterna metal’ acts - which is a shame.
I’ve got quite a bit of catching up to do - new Aphex Twin, Robin Guthrie, David Gilmour, Celtic Frost, etc.
You definitely have to check out Robin Guthrie’s ‘Continental’ CD. It sounds like an instrumental Cocteau Twins album…somewhere between Victorialand and Milk & Kisses.
And why is Jizzwad the only one that likes Tom Waits here, hm?
I was looking for the Waits reference, but must’ve overlooked it. I actually like some of Tom Waits material (took years for him to grow on me). Mule Variations, Bone Machine, and Blood Money are a few of my favorites.

Not my favorite period of theirs (I prefer the earlier, gothier stuff) but def. worth a listen!

1002[/reply]He started a thread on the new 3CD set, entitled “Orphans” (just scroll down to find it). No one had replied to it…[mad]
You must be thinking of “The Drift”. Or are we doing best of '95 here too.[:P]
Oh yeah, and the new Tom Waits is great. It’s hard enough to fill out one odds and ends album and have it be decent, but he somehow managed to fill three and make it all compelling.
