Rate Peligro's Music

So I finally got around to making one of them lists of ‘faves’ over at RateYourMusic.com

http://rateyourmusic.com/list/Peligro/elegy_for_vanquished_materials/

Nothing serious…just a bit of fun. Not finished yet though - it’s a work in progress. Need to fill up 500 spaces. That could take some time.

Interested in feedback from anyone here. If you’ve ever wanted to take a regular old potshot at me…now’s yr chance. Knock yrself out.

Tell me how bad/awful/great/petty/silly it is.

Has anyone else here done one of these? I think it’s a great site. I’ve discovered ALOT of good music just by browsing these lists.

Good list. Pretty much ignorant of over half of it, but from what I’ve heard, good stuff.

But three (3) Ministry albums? That surprised me. [:)]

Great list, of the music I’ve heard that is.

A few surprises: Soundgarden, Alice Cooper, Morrisey, Kate Bush, Nirvana - Nevermind (Their worst album, IMO) and Nick Cave. Weren’t you giving me shit about liking the new Nick Cave album not too long ago? Do you dislike the new stuff or were you just breaking balls?

But all in all, a great list!

Nick Cave hasn’t made a good album since ‘The Good Son’ (1990). His mid 90s output was particularly dire.

That Soundgarden album left a big impression on me as a teenager. Couldn’t handle their next few releases. Same goes for Faith No More. ‘Angel Dust’ won me over in a heartbeat but subsequent releases left me flat.

Alice Cooper’s early output (1969 - 1976) is outstanding. Shame he’s ALWAYS going to remembered more for his pop metal abominations.

Kate Bush is pure. So is Prince.

Nirvana I only ‘discovered’ recently (obviously I knew their music…just never liked it).

He did lots of self-indulgent crap in the 90’s, but there were some gems mixed in there. I believe he has redeemed himself with Lyre of Orpheus/Abattoir Blues and Dig, Lazarus Dig. At least with the latest one he got off the piano and acted like a frontman and put on one hell of a show.

Angel Dust is one of my all time favorite rock albums. Your right, FNM never quite achieved the same artistic success after that one. As for Soundgarden I never liked the guys voice, too much wailing for me. For Seattle Grunge I’ll take Alice In Chains.

Haven’t heard to much of it, but my parents really enjoyed his show in the early 70’s. Seems he kinda became a self-parody after a while, kinda like Al and Marilyn Manson.

Kate Bush is pure. So is Prince.

Prince is da shit. Can’t say as though I’ve given Kate Bush a fair shake. I think I burned out on Nirvana listening to it in my teenage years, but I still give Bleach as spin every now and then. There are some great songs on Nevermind but the production is just so much compressed garbage and multi-tracked vocals. He should have gotten Albini to produce that one, would have been a gem.

Nick Cave hasn’t made a good album since ‘The Good Son’ (1990).

Sorry but this is absolute and utter bullshit. Especially considering The Good Son isn’t one of his strongest efforts??!!

As for the rate the music site…I’ve heard a few people bring it up from time to time but never looked into it. Sounds like a good way to kill some time when time is needed to kill.

Good call for number 1 Peligro.

I’m a bit puzzled about number 3 though??? Maybe I need to listen to that a bit more closely???

‘The Soft Bulletin’ at no.3??? Wow. To me that’s giving it a lot more praise than its worth. Regardless there are some quality inclusions from what I saw, particularly ‘Low’.

EDIT: lol at Exorcist II. Can’t remember what the soundtrack was like but damn that has to be the worst film ever, well next to Nic Cage’s ‘The Wicker Man’. That was funny though going through your albums (The Acid Mother’s Temple covers being the highlights) then BAM! Linda Blair’s ugly mug. Anyway I’m off to get me some foreign ladies.

There are some INSANE inclusions here. Well done! I have a friend that I believe you would really get along well with. Especially with all that MB, Whitehouse, Nurse With Wound stuff you seem to hold so highly.

Funnily enough, your top 10 is not a long way off what I would include if I were to make one of these things.
I would probably have moved Pink Floyd’s "Piper At The Gates…’ into the top 10 and moved Swans ‘Children Of God’ and that recent Scott Walker album higher up the list.

I’d have:

  1. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
  2. Brian Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain
  3. The Stooges - The Stooges
  4. Throbbing Gristle - DOA The Third And Final Report
  5. The Cure - Seventeen Seconds
  6. Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Technician
  7. Pink Floyd - Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
  8. Scott Walker - The Drift
  9. Amon Duul II - Yeti
  10. The Boredoms - Pop Tatari

…or something along those lines. But it would be too hard fitting in everything I like.

I’d also include Bowie’s ‘Hunky Dory’, which I didn’t see there.

Kind of an odd P.J. Harvey selection.

I could never understand why some people take such enormous pleasure in making lists like this. I’d have trouble picking a top 10. Rating music over all seems like a bad idea.

But anyway, old Alice Cooper kicks ass.

Kate Bush is pure.

I’m a little surprised I haven’t heard more people talking about Kate Bush around these parts. She’s pretty excellent.

Yo Peligro…I’ve joined up but not sure how top do the top 500 thing?

The Good Son is very hit or miss with me. Let Love In is a fucking amazing album! Since then, he’s been hit or miss with me though. The Grinderman album is pretty nice, and a decent bit of the last Seeds’ album is good also.

Selected Ambient Works Vol. II is an amazing album. I remember when I first got it, listening to each track while staring at the pictures, coming up with my own ideas as to which pictures went with which tracks. The album is an experience…much like another favorite of mine you have listed, Locust Abortion Technician.

Ah the memories…one of my best hallucinogenic experiences involved a pen and paper, a bag of mushrooms, a lava lamp, and Locust Abortion Technician. Oh yes, and Tron running on a continuous loop backwards.

OK. I need to try this.

I was still a teenager when I heard Locust for the first time. Seventeen years later it still makes me queasy when I listen to it.

Actually, the soundtrack to my greatest hallucinogenic experience was at a freaky house party (full of noise heads and Whitehouse fans) I went to about 10 years ago. Despite a generous amount of protest from the assembled party goers, I started playing Primal Scream’s ‘Screamadelica’ and suddenly everyone went quiet and started dancing. I totally lost it and felt like I was spinning through space and felt that there was a sun glowing out of my chest. It was great.

^terrifying

What the fuck man! No Backstreet Boys?!

I see some TG which is mandatory “you motherfuckers!” and some Current 93 which i’ve been meaning to get into.

I made one of these rate your music lists a while back (and deleted it). A Top 100 of my favourite albums ever. Near impossible to select the top 10. I have over 500 cds and over 100 vinyl in my collection - selecting 10 to represent the cream of the crop…hard.

I had Joy Division’s ‘Unknown Pleasures’ at no. 1 and alot of early industrial and post punk high up on the list. I think I had more grindcore/death metal and obscure indie rock stuff (Flying Saucer Attack, Galaxie 500, Loop etc) than on your list).

But yeah, I agree, more people here should try and put one together, it’d make for good discussion.

I agree
