Rantology, why so bad?

Hey all.

Why do most people have this disgust with rantology. I havnt heard anything except the snippets. Sounds ok. Nothing groundbreaking sure, but it’s not a new album, and it’s not really a b-sides collection. What came to mind with all the “nothing new” posts, was Reznors re-release of the downward spiral, the 2-disc one. Now, Rantology at least appears interesting (to me at least), I looked at the track-list for the 2nd downward spiral “rarities” disc, I have every track on singles except the three demos at the end, (I suppose nin singles are sometimes hard to find) and why does an album from 1994 need remastering anyway, has any1 heard it? Slightly off-topic there… just an observation.
I like the idea of Rantology, why not? He needed an album like it, and like he said in that statement, he wanted something a little more than Greatest Fits II, and like Afra pointed out, Ministry+Revco next year, what did you expect on this album?

Hmm, someone also mentioned 3 versions of No W already? Prior to Rantology. One on the bush compilation, one on houses… whats the other one?

the 3rd one is on new issues of houses album, cuz they had to remove that intro or something like that.

In my opinion dead souls and burn sound much better on the TDS remastered cd than they did on their original compilations. I haven’t really listened much to the first disc to notice a difference yet. I didn’t care a whole lot for the 3 demos. but remastering old cds with a 2nd cd of “bonus” stuff seems pretty standard these days. i know the cure, pavement, and random other 80/90s bands have been doing it lately.

From 1994, never made sense to me either, especially when they were using digital audio equipment then. Most releases which should be remastered should not be in the '90s. I think they increased the treble - not really remastering it. It did sound better but not a whole lot better especially when you listen to other remastered works out there (where it sounds like a completely new release with the quality). TKK is a good example of this.

Sounds like you need the latest audio equipment to take advantage of this anyhow - DVD-Audio. I should really cave in and get one of those players…

Maybe he did it for marketing? I dunno…

no, that’s what rykodisc did to revco’s big sexy land, fucking it up beyond any recognition. i thknk the main reason for that tds ‘deluxe’ and all that crap packaging was to re-release that album in 5.1, and the second cd of bonuses are only on sacd edition, which is the deluxe one, as for dvd, it was just pretty much standard dvd audio (or was it dualdisc) of the album, no additional stuff. i’m not a big fan of tds, but yes, the second cd had 90% of the tracks that could be found on other halos.

I’d love for Remission, Bites, Mind: TPI, and CF&M to be remastered, but we can all dream…

The NIN Downward Spiral special edition sounds terrific in the DVD audio format, tons of effects going on all around you. Its quite an exciting listen to be honest, even if the bass gets a little too heavy (Piggy will kill your subwoofer). Sorta like the Ministry Aniimostisomina DVD release. But, I think I would prefer to hear Pretty Hate Machine get a much needed remix, oh and Land or Rape and Honey too.

If this was a remastered, re-issued with B-sides etc. Land of Rape and Honey, I’d be all for it. As it stands it’s a lazy cash-in. One new track, some remixes which from what I’ve heard are pretty lazy and in some cases almost indistinguishable from the originals, “Bloodlines” (which is pretty good, like it was when it was titled “So What”) and a few tacked on, previously released (how lazy do you get?) live tracks. Of course, the worst part of it all is that what should at most be a mid-price disc, costs $18.98 from Amazon.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have far better things to spend $19 on.

To me it just seems like a waste. I mean it seems like half the songs are on HotM or Psalm 69. If this was supposed to be a good replacement for Greatest Fits, then it failed miserably.

bah! Rantology isn’t that bad.

I have The Great Satan playing constantly in my car. If that’s what RGB is going to sound like, I am very pleased.

When I think of Ministry, I think of their live shows. When I go to a Ministry concert I want music that will get the crowd into a frenzy. I mean, last tour, as soon as the tempo sped up during No W, the crowd went nuts and people were flying left, right and center in the pit. THATS what I expect from a Ministry show. I guess thats why songs on DSOTS and Animositisomina never really appealed to me.

But that’s just me.
