Question

Any musicians in the house? I have a question.

Why does electronic music like IDM, dub, EDM, etc. have schizophrenic song structure?

It doesn’t follow you’re typical intro/verse/chorus/verse/pre-chorus/chorus/bridge/chorus it’s really all over the place and no real template for this stuff. I ask because I need tips on how to approach this for my own ventures into electronic music.

Why not just copy the templates of some of the songs you like from those genres and since it is so scattered just tweak those formats up a little as well.

You don’t need a template. Do whatever feels right.
I can tell you that a lot of electronic music is structured to be mixed by a DJ so there are frequently long intros with new instruments coming in every 8 measures. But apart from that, why worry about rules?

In general, I think it stems back to the origins of the genre. If you’re bored with guitar/bass/drums, then you’re probably bored with verse chorus verse.

Messing around with the instruments used sort of leads into messing around with song structures and other elements of songwriting. Sadly, not so much with time signatures. 4/4 is still all over the place, since so much is dancefloor oriented.

I play keys, so naturally electronic is my go to.

I suppose the non traditional structures is to break away from the cliches that techno started in the 90s, with repetitive loops and rave type beats. In some ways it gave electronic music a really bad wrap and a lot of rock musicians in the 90s abandoned keyboards and electronic gear completely.

Interesting enough, those dark times in the 90s led to a demanding return, and starting with 2005 or so, a lot of really cool electronic and ambient bands started happening, and there seems to be a strong focus on blending the 1980s with a modern sound.

Dubstep seems to be fading away. I feel spoiled by cEvin Key’s Download project, having had a chance to hear that style of music before it officially became a thing.

Sorry for the lengthy post. There’s some other cool electronic genres that might interest or inspire you. Vaporwave and Synthwave are worth checking out. A personal favorite of mine currently is a band called Gunship.

Found this, really helped.

I always had a knack for making long intros I think that came from listening to so much FLA through the years. Also been listening to a lot of Perturbator and Clock DVA for inspiration. Someone mention Download? I need to give them a listen too I’ve always heard good things.

Thanks for the tips.

Because twats that produce that music only know how to fuck around with a computer.
