Prurient - Bermuda Drain

Anybody heard this yet? I had heard of Prurient but never really investigated his stuff as he was always described as a “noise” artist and I’m not a big noise fan. I ran into a link and streamed this latest album though and I’m quite impressed… the album sounds somewhat “industrial” yet at the same time seems to lack all the cliches that are associated with the genre. Check it out, I think some of you folks might like this:

I will be buying this - many thanks.

Dominick Fernow is set to appear on the next Greymachine album out next year.

Shit nice! I think the Prurient stuff gets better as he goes along. He has gradually stopped doing stuff that is just plain annoying, painful to the ears and pretentious.

I’ve met him a few times and he’s a really nice guy. For the Nursing Home haters, he was actually selling our debut
CD-R from 2006 at his shop and he is a fan of the project.

My favorite Prurient so far is ‘Black Vase’. I love the use of real percussion on that album and it sounds all clunky like some dinosaur drum machine.

This is sounding great so far.

That band he was in Cold Cave is still gay as fuck, for lack of a better term. And I mean the colloquial use of the word. But it sounds like he took the good parts of that band (retro synths) and brought them into his sound.

He will be on the next Greymachine? Awesome! I really like that project. It’s a shame all my iTunes purchases were lost when I got fired from my job so I lost that album along with many others.

I love this:

That new Prurient album sure is different to what he is more accustomed to doing. I like it but hope it’s not going to be a contiuing trend in future releases. It’s a bit TOO much of a radical shift.

I’ll be seeing him open for and presumably play with Cold Cave on tuesday. Noise is always a genre better experienced live, IMO, looking forward to hearing him.

I feel the same way… “noise” is so much better experienced live because it often has this performance art/ritualistic feel to it. I just don’t understand throwing on a noise record on the home stereo, I wouldn’t know how to respond to it, just pace around the house and rage? I guess I can understand how it can be cathartic for people (especially to the artist, which is I think part of the ritual aspect), but I generally like a little rythym with my abrasive noise, (call me pedestrian).

So it seems you guys seem to know more about this guy than I do, is most of his material mainly abrasive noise then I take it? I’ll definately check out Black Vase (thanks Void).

I used to like playing Noise at home on an amp with the bass cranked when I had a bunch of people over fucked out of our minds. Other than that yeah not so great for home listening…

If you want rhythm yeah I’d check out ‘Black Vase’ as most of it has some of that or ‘Cocaine Death’ also but that is more synth oriented where ‘Black Vase’ is like thudding drum machine shit.

Yes most of his material is more towards Noise but he seems to be flirting more and more with rhythm, melodic synth and song structure.

“A Meal Can Be Made” from this new ‘Bermuda Drain’ album is easily the most accessible thing I’ve ever heard him do. Sounds almost like early Skinny Puppy…

I am liking this album a lot. Probably my new favorite. I think I’ll go over to his record store, buy it and have a chat with Dom…

I think I own about 70% of Prurient’s (massive) discography. On last count I had around 20 cds, 2 tapes and 5 vinyl. Don’t have this new one.

My favourite is also Black Vase. And the Prurient/Kevin Drumm album that Peligro linked to just before.

Some are better than others. There’s definitely the odd shit-can here and there. Not too fond of Arrowhead and Troubled Sleep. A couple of others I could do without also.

Voidhead, I’m tripping out that you are on a first name basis with one of my favourite artists. You know Dom is great friends with Sonic Youth don’t you?

I’m off to blast some Prurient now.

lol not really on a first name basis…More like he would know me by sight. It’s been at least a year last I saw him was at No Fun.

This album is definitely now my favorite Prurient release. It combines basically all my favorite aspects of his sound.

I’m sure he is friends with Sonic Youth. All of these people know each other in this broke ass NYC art/music scene…
